What do these four have in common?
They were confident that they had given their all tonight and confident that they had played well enough to deserve more than they got. They were the only four who had the 'guts' and conviction to come over to the 2000 Blades fans at the end and applaud them. They received applause back from fans who respected their efforts. Ched was the best player on the park tonight; Quinn did well; Lowton showed that he must start from now on and we must persevere with him when - as young men do - he makes a few errors; Boggy again came on and made an impact.
I'll excuse Lowry who had been sent off. I'd like to think that he would have joined the four lads who came over as he would have received applause too. It was not his fault what happened tonight. I'll also excuse Richard Cresswell who applauded the Blades as he ran off despite the hammer he took from the Blades for a five minute spell.
The rest of them? Heads down, sulking, walking straight off with - in a couple of cases - the odd half hearted clap from the halfway line. Simonsen, Nosworthy, Collins, Ertl, Yeates, Doyle and Bent ... all of them. Not one of these pieces of crap had the guts to come and take the flak from people who pay their wages.
Does it matter some of you may think ... To me, yes. I paid £25 to get in, £20 worth of petrol, pie, programme etc ... Above the money, those players represent my team, your team, every Blade's team. And not one of those five had the balls, the guts, the bottle to come and applaud the magnificent backing they were given. Not one of them. That angers me. If I was a professional footballer, I would play for SUFC for nothing and I would run through a wall for that shirt. If I had a bad game, I'd go over, face up to the fans and take the stick I was due if I'd played poorly. I hope that by coming over to the Blades at the end, by getting the applause back that they offered us, that those four players realise that the Blades fans weren't aiming the 'You're not fit to wear the shirt!' chant at them.
I don't care what the circumstances, those 2000 Blades at Glanford Park tonight deserved recognition for the superb backing they gave their players. Until the 85th minute, the fans backed the team superbly and turned on them near the end as they sunk to new levels of ineptitude. I don't demand much from my team but I do demand that they show me respect for forking out my money and backing them whether they're shit or whether they're world beaters. I want to see that it hurts when they lose, I want to see that nights like tonight hurt them as much as it hurts me. I want to see their faces showing the pain of relegation.
Every football match has a loser; every football season has 3 relegated teams; I accept that every now and then, it has to be my team because we're not Manchester United. I do not accept that people who make a lot more money than me, for doing something I would do for nothing, treat me with disrespect like I was treat by those players tonight. I also expect the manager to front up to the fans as well. I can't imagine Warnock not coming out and acknowledging the backing his team received. Micky is having a rough ride and deserves time to sort the mess he has been left out but he has to come and applaud the fans. He is one, he knows that.
So, credit where it is due. Well done Ched, Quinny, Boggy and Matty Lowton.
The rest of you? Sort yourselves out or call yourself a taxi.
