Been busy this week.

I was at Oxford last Saturday, I was aware that there were angry fans at the end of the match but wasnt sure if they were targeting the team as a whole or were targeting individual players. I clapped at the team when they were clapping us but did see one or two suddenly stop clapping. putting their hands out as if they were puzzled at some fans being abusive. Reading the threads tonight I was surprised that some of our best players were targeted. Due to my deafness I dont know which players the moronic so called fans were aiming at but just seen in one of the threads that Hamer was one of them. Is this true?

If true then why? I just dont understand.

It's a comment I understand Silent. Underperforming isn't allowed in some supporter's eyes, plus there's a small matter of certain players being played out of position which is puzzling but something we all have to accept, like it or not.

Currently Gus is without doubt our most creative player, the fact that we don't always see him at his best obviously annoys/angers some fans, and I doubt you'll ever change the minds of anyone who doesn't want their mind changed. No doubt most teams possess a minority of vocal supporters, the extent to which their anger becomes poisonous can only be judged by the depth of their desire to point fingers and cast someone in the role of villain.

I think this summer will prove instructive, in no small part due to the new owners and the level of intention they display in both the transfer market and how busy they'll be on making sure the new training facilities are completed. There's also the matter of whether the existing management team remain or whether we see new incumbents, so a great deal to contemplate, but returning to supporters who feel there's benefit to be had by tearing a strip off of certain players, I think that attempting to alter their perspective and to appreciate a different point of view is probably futile. I think we'd all like to see reasoned discussion rule, but sometimes supporting the Blades can become a very personal affair that sometimes overspills into something unpleasant and toxic.

Fans moaning isn't a new thing?

I started going to first team games in 1985 and some of the abuse the players got then was far worse, not to mention the manager!

Even when we got promoted in the Bassett era fans used to moan in boozer (as shown in United) or write to the Green Un.

Over time have witnessed loads of Blades arguing/fighting about things which is pathetic.

I don't agree with what has been alleged about calling players abusive names when walking off the pitch but also don't agree with Wilder lumping all the fans with the same brush as the folk at Oxford sound like a minority.

I agree, I don’t think we should be tarring all the fans with the same brush but at the same time we’ve got some proper bellends supporting us who seemingly can’t wait for us to lose before sticking the boot in on here and online. It’s almost like they want us to lose so they can come along on here and shit out their nonsense.

I’ve seen us be really shite, and the players worthy of severe criticism. When you are pushing for a promotion after a huge summer rebuild isn’t the time. I can only surmise that a lot of the empty vessels making the loudest noise at the minute wasn’t around or probably not that bothered about United when we was languishing in the bowels of League One

The other thing that really pissed me off this week is Plymouth tickets. Last weekend everyone was begging for them and desperate to go, but on the back of two defeats the last few days there have been tickets available left, right and centre. It’s almost like you have a couple of defeats and the new breed of superfans can’t be arsed to go and support team any more.

Disappointment is hard to qualify as it effects people in different ways( or reaction). No doubt there was big Disappointment on the back of that Oxford defeat.A team that had won one in ten ! I've been around a long time and seen it happen before.
Just like some players see red and get sent off! there are fans who react in a similar way ! It's futile but letting off steam in this way probable makes them feel better.
Put it to bed and move on! We have to!.

Underperforming is okay but at this stage it's difficult to accept or even justify. We were on the back of a big win at home and a great performance. We were in such a decent position to keep ourselves just ahead of the competition for the title race and in the space of 2 games we've ended up 3rd and now basically hoping one of the other two slip up.

If we were aiming for a play off spot I could probably accept it but we aren't. We're aiming to be a PL side and that just can not be happening. Not only does it put us last in the race for the title it also demonstrates what we're capable of and we all know all too bloody well, the performances we've put in all season will not wash in the PL. Quite alot of away performances we've dug in our heels and ground out a 1 goal win, in the PL that will very very very quickly turn in to a 4-1 loss.

I don't think (most) fans are saying we should never ever underperform, nor do I think they would claim we can never lose but it's a very big humbler and I think alot of fans are realising that despite our position, we don't look anything like a side that can even attempt to compete in the PL. If we pull off a promotion I think it will have the same atmosphere as the last promotion. Celebration but a deep feeling of "we aren't ready and we're going to get fucked"

last 2 games have gone we lost them both it happens weve won most matches we still have a great chance if the other 2 slip up sogo all out attack blades no good dwelling on whatcould have been if we won the last 2 games its gone now so just get back to the job in hand and WIN your last 5 games and see were it takes us blades.,utb..chow..get behind them not against them so just get 5 games WON great sufc lads

The Oxford incident has been blown out of proportion.

The handful or so giving stick were well out of order imho but the airtime given to it has made it seem a far bigger deal than it was and now we've got too much discussion about Wilder and divisions when everyone needs to stick together for the run in and if so, the play offs.

I understand Wilder wanted to back up the players and didn't disagree with his view on those few in question. I just think he'd have been better listening to the club media person he referenced.

A bigger issue seems to have arisen out of a handful going OTT out of 1700 away fans.

However, I also remember losing/drawing to Oxford, ironically in April too, in 1990. The reaction of our home support at the end was far worse and Bassett rightly criticised it.

A few weeks later we were promoted on the last day.

I didn't go to Oxford but I've just been talking to a friend who I bumped into on the train to Plymouth. He says the abusers at Oxford were a very small loud - mouthed .minority.
For various reasons I went to a lot of away games in league 1 days and I used to bump into fans on a regular basis. It used to be good meeting them.
Now it only happens occasionally - whether that is larger away support now I don't know.
There do seem to be a small number of very angry people about and I find it difficult to understand. It seems some people only accept perfection from our team and go off on one when something goes wrong. The self same people often don't react to bad refereeing decisions or bad fouls by opponent's. It doesn't make any sense to me!

Several comments there that I agree with - no one likes a loss, watching a player perform admirably one minute then appear to go awol the next is mystifying, and most significantly I agree that if we are promoted we could get tonked on a regular basis. Losing Souttar was a turning point, with him in the side we looked in great shape defensively (as did Anel who played with far more confidence).

In my view we need a wholesale upgrade in recruitment, but it will take time and time is something we may not possess if we wish to remain a Prem club, so we're caught between a rock and a hard place. There's also the not insignificant point of recruitment - attempting to get better quality players interested in a club who may appear strong candidates for relegation may be a hard call. So looking farther afield would make a great deal of sense as a foreign player may be eager to join a Prem club rather than pursue a home grown player who demands £100K per week, and that brings me onto the question of wages. No one wants us to find ourselves in a situation where we're mortgaging ourselves out of existence, but it's a harsh reality that in order to attract better quality players our wage structure has to be addressed.
Other clubs, most notably Palace, Brentford and Brighton who appear to have a recruitment infrastructure that we can only dream of having.

A lot to digest in your post and I share many of your concerns, and maybe I'm grasping at faint hope but maybe the new owners and their desire to make us a more ambitious club will see us evolve into something that currently seems a long way off.

Could have sworn it was the Oxford game. Looking at back it must have been Sunderland or Barnsley then.

We lost at home to Barnsley who were shit, 1-2, we lost to Sunderland at home 1-3, we got pasted 5-0 at West Ham, and lost 3-2 at Pompey during the run in but the worst was the Elland Road capitulation on Easter Monday 4-0, most fans thought that was us done

Incidentally, the promotion video from that season includes our New years day capitulation at Oxford, the West Ham defeat (at length) and the Leeds defeat, there are a couple of away victories that dont feature, which was bizarre

The Social Media person CW mentioned will be well aware of this forum, as well as other Blades Facebook groups as well as monitoring Twitter, so they will have found out about it pretty quickly.

As bad as it was on here (from a minority as it was just the same few members posting), I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't ten times worse on those Facebook groups and Twitter, especiallyTwitter as it get very toxic at times, and Twitter doesn't always have the best rule enforcement.

Plus, we know that Football Heaven have an account on here (FH Team) while Staton, Giddings and Oxley all have Twitter accounts, which is probably how they first found out about the abuse towards the players.

Will quite a few people who abused the players look back on what they said with regret? I reckon they will, as they might look back at what they said and think, s**t, I'm not a bad person but why did I write that about X player, what was I thinking?

Regarding the recent slip up, the last 2 times we've been promoted from the championship (2019, 2023), we had a little wobble towards the end of the season and dropped points, we've just got to hope that the players can get back on track tomorrow.

I don't think I've ever experienced anything worse at the Lane than the gate campaign against George Long. Young keeper had a good start today his career but when he had a dip on form fans were constantly after him. I'm glad he managed to eke out a decent career for himself. Clearly a lad who suffers from lack of confidence and our fans sabotaged their own team!

Our fans were terrible in league one. The whole flares in the concourse and trying to steal the pitch cover at Port Vale (?) we attracted some right plantcum towards the end who had zero interest in watching football.
