Trevor Hockey never wore shin pads, he was aaard.

Aye he was, and I love Trevor Hockey but he's have been injured for the season just like Coutts is with the same tackle and crap shin pads.

I have to apologise to the forum for relaying inaccurate information. Having dug out previously mentioned shin pads I find they are indeed Sondico (I know) and not Patrick branded and worse still....they are Bryan Robson endorsed....I accept my forthcoming ban with good grace and hang my head in shame.

Totally agree. I can never fathom why football shin pads are so small! I play field hockey (no smirks please!) and the hockey shin pads cover the full length of the shin - see beneath.

Compare the hockey size with the football ones above right -Liverpool - and you can clearly see the football ones only cover half the shin, hence so many footballers need tape to keep the shin pads in place. Now although you can get some nasty injuries with a hockey stick or ball, its far more likely to get a far worse injury with football and bad tackles, as football is a contact game. I'm convinced that Coutts wouldn't be out for the season if he had a full length hockey shin pad.

The ones Coutts had on were even higher than them to be fair. Look at his standing leg...

As a kid l had a pair of these beauties*:

In the years since, upon seeing plays fk around with tape and repositioning shinnies :) I've often wondered why players/companies don't go for full Shin and integrated ankle protection. Seems like a pretty minimal layer.

*I even wore one as a forearm guard for cricket. Saved some pain when a corky bounce up of the playground tarmac!

No way would I want big clunky shin pads if I was playing football professionally. I'd rather take the slight risk. It seems that's the way most players see it too. Important to have some ankle protection though.

I never wore shin pads, hence I've got shins like a relief map of the Himalayas

Remember playing footy at school you had to wear shin pads! Not because it was a rule or anything just because some clever dick would walk round "checking" who had them and who didnt......

If you wear shin pads right down to your ankle it interferes with the free movement of your foot and your ability to run, turn and kick the ball cleanly.

It seems most professional footballers wear the smallest shin pads available to comply with regulation that says they must be worn, rather than to protect their shins?

Surprised with the amount of money teams invest in players that no one has come up with some kind of all in one light weight boot that supports and protects player shins and ankles......

Tom Davies for Everton as far as I can tell doesn't wear them. He wears short socks and he was adjusting them and he rolled them down, nowhere to be seen.

They’re not allowed not to wear them anymore, but I think many wear kids shinpads to comply with the law, but keep them well away from their ankle. Loads of players cut the feet out of their socks and wear ‘tru sox’ which are short anti slip socks, to stop their feet moving about in the boot.
Presumably because that would be so off putting!

He must have had them down his side, he was sitting sorting his socks out and he had the non slip socks like you say, a middle sort of beige padded stocking that looked like a giant hula hoop and then the top of his Everton socks. I wondered if the beige things were some kind of new bullshit shinpads but yeah, must have had some kiddie ones between his legs or at his side.

Either way I remember when I was playing regular team football when I was a teenager I had some Adidas ones that went from about an inch above my ankle to about 4 inches below my knee, and they had ankle protection built in, you put them on like a sock. I was happy for the extra protection, thankfully I didn't break anything but a Coutts like meeting of legs before I got them left a crater in my right shin I still have now.

Spoke to Coutts today at the Summer house in Dore, said he’s ahead of schedule and possibly back before the end of the season. Great news.

Can’t like that post any more if I tried.
Hope he’s doing well, and raring to get back at it. A returning Coutts, fully fit, without risk of further injury in time for a hopeful play off run would be great news.

I posted on here that I did the same thing when I was 20 , and I was out of my casts in 10 weeks , and walking on crutches for 3 to 4 , I am sure he will get a hell of a lot better treatment then I did , I also predicted he will be back before the end of the season I would put money on it !!!

Unless we are in a relegation battle I would be happy for him to stay away from playing games and get fully 100% fit during the summer for next season than rushing back too early for some meaningless mid table clashes.

Once they said he wouldn't require an operation then I suspected he might return before the end of the season.

I don't think the break is anywhere near as bad as it looked in the photos.

Fingers crossed we see Coutts back in the team soon.

I used to wear separate ankle pads made from neoprene, or summat. Before then I'd have cuts and gouges and all sorts on my ankles.

Can't remember Trafford catching me though.

Either not quick enough or we played on the same side ;)

In the Got Not Got book (great read) one of the authors remembers their school coach who hated shinpads (he thought them too "pansy", needless to say he was an aging Scottish man in the 70s) and only let the kids play (at the most) with magazines taped round their legs.

His policy quickly changed as soon as one lad suffered a Coutts-like injury
