To start Saturday?

Wasn't at the game last night but Coutts has been 'the man' pretty much all season in their with Fleck...however, I was impressed by Carruthers at Posh, brings something a bit different to the squad with his energy, aggression.

Decisions, decisions....

Coutts for me ,thought Carruthers was 'Flecklike'rather than bringing anything different. I wouldn't change the 3 in the middle or the wingbacks ,or the front 2 or the back 3 or the goalie from our team which has got us where we are.

...good point, could well be Coutts and Carruthers if Fleck were struggling, didn't someone post he got a knock on his knee last night?

He was struggling for a few mins and actively avoided being passed to, which looked worrying. Seemingly shook it off before half time and was fine second half.

Carruthers is a different type of player. I think Coutts suits us better in that role, he's a pace setter and a guaranteed possession keeper. Carruthers tries ambitious through balls, drives with the ball and tries to pick gaps that most of us can't even see and it won't always come off.

I think Carruthers is ideal to play against a side who will put 11 behind the ball, Coutts for the next 2 for me.

Yes. Saturday is a game we really don't want to lose. We need to retain possession and make them run around chasing us. That in itself should create gaps for us to exploit. Coutts is more suited for that kind of game.
Keep it tight, don't take unnecessary risks and we should be able to finish them off late on.

Exactly, and we've rested players which added to our already impressive fitness should stand us in good stead. They didn't have that luxury yesterday as they're the ones chasing and need to put their strongest team out every single game. Let's tire them out and go for the jugular.

Did i read correctly that Carruthers is more of a replacement for Fleck, but with a bit more bite than Fleck/ Coutts?

Big Question is Duffy or JayO?

Coutts all day long.

I think Carruthers has been bought with next season in mind. We get promoted I can see wilder playing him in a 3 with Coutts and Fleck. Love Duffy but league one is his level.

I would keep the 3 of Fleck, Duffy & Coutts. I think Coutts' performances (I have only seen home performances lately) have dropped slightly. He is still performing well but not quite the same level as he was earlier in the season.

I haven't seen much of Carruthers only substitute appearances. Its great to have two good options instead of two poor options like we have had in previous seasons.

Coutts every time. Our midfield trio of Coutts, Fleck, and Duffy have chemistry, they have excellent instinctive awareness of each other's play, and they compliment one another in ways that are rare. A great midfield, and probably the best unit in this area of the pitch we've had for decades. Can't wait to see how they respond to the Championship.

Don't worry about any injury to Fleck, he's indestructible.

For me the question should be Duffy or Carruthers. Coutts is too integral to our overall game to leave him out IMO. I'd still keep Duffy in the starting 11, but having Carruthers on the bench is a very nice option if we need to shake things up during a game.
O'Shea is direct competion for Duffy. Chapman also provided Duffy with competion. I think Carruthers comes in to play in a Coutts or Flecks slot.

Carruthers should be able to play in any of the three central midfield positions.

Considering current form and assuming those that didn't play last night are fit, I think this would be our strongest side against Scunthorpe

Moore
Basham, Wright, O'Connell
Coutts, Fleck
Duffy
Sharp, Hanson

Given Bolton's very big and physical side, I'd certainly consider playing EEL in place of Basham against them.

Oops - almost forgot Freeman and Lafferty

Impressed playing in the hole in his 2 sub appearances - just thought he was off the pace a bit at Posh.

You are right though, he does bring something different to Coutts - and what could be an exciting/attacking difference too.

Just think CW & AK will go back to the safety of our A team that got us in this position to start with - the players at the business end of the pitch got good rests last night - and I include Freeman in that. Did you notice who was "poaching" when Billy scored v Posh?

UTB

Coutts. Great that he's got some pressure on his position though - seemed to up his game (both in terms of positivity & aggression) vs Wimbledon after having retreated into his shell a little bit for a few games before that.

We need him to be the forward-thinking dictater of play, like he has been for most of this season, rather than the slower-down/keep-it-safe type that he can be at times.

Yeah, fair point, he was a little, that'll come with games.

Still, to a lesser extent, but like with Hanson, he brings a different aspect to the team, that bit of bite and attacking intent that's sometimes missing

UTB!

P.S- Seen back on the highlights that Freeman was up there, didn't notice/recall at the time... ;)

Think the general feeling here is coutts, Fleck and Duffy and I agree, they have done it for most of the season and deserve to go on Saturday however aving Carruthers and oshea on the bench is really exciting, a position I cannot remember being in for years, at the moment oshea is the one I will be looking forward to coming on more than most, although the thought of Carruthers and Lavery is equally appealing, happy days.
