was a white elephant from day 1
they would never in a million years get blue riband athletic events in sheffield
while ever theres an arena in london
not even Glasgow will ever fill the stadium they built for the commonwealth there just arent the spectators

honestly has anyone on here ever attended an athletics event, a run of the mill one
its not something would get me excited

beach volleyball ,,,, well theres interest there

As an athlete the facilities at DV were second to none. As a track is was the quickest in Britain so god knows why more events weren't held there.

As a white elephant it was a massive mistake. God knows why they built it without getting at least one sporting club to be based there...

They kept it in reserve for so long to "Save our Owls". With hindsight, they should have hung on to it for a few years longer.

Sheffield Eagles called it home for a while. I went to watch them there once. Nothing against the Eagles, a Sheffield team who produced the greatest team performance of any Sheffield team in living memory, but it was he most soul destroying 'professional' sporting event I've ever attended. Less than 1000 there in a 25k stadium, more atmosphere on Pluto. The World Student Games, and everything about it, was Sheffield Council in microcosm. Helen Sharman even dropped the torch on the way to lighting the flame FFS!

Ironically Eagles just played their first game at the new "stadium" on the site of the DVS, the Olympic Legacy Park. It has a temporary stand seating a few hundred. There is talk of building a 2500-seater stand.

God knows why they didn't just keep the old main stand of the DVS

Back on topic, and sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but word has it that WH owners bribed the ex ICF hoolies who head the Real West Ham fans group with some "readies" to call off the march. One of them has said that he turned down 20k in cash.

Yes.

There was an athletics Grand Prix held there years ago.

I'm not sure that's something I'd put down in writing mate, SWFC sued one of their own fans for less.

What aircraft? They don't arrive for a few years I thought.

Not needed yet. Pointless having 40 odd aircraft (bought and paid for) and loads of pilots (paid for and trained) hanging about waiting for the carrier to be ready. Its only just done it's Rotary Wing workup trials (the results of which are under scrutiny). First jet lands on and takes off next year sometime, very possibly States side.

And for all those 'oh, the F35B is the cheapo version and not good enough' ... you're talking and thinking bollocks. Usually these people source their 'info' from great places like The Sun. F35B will be the most capable aircraft we have ever had.

Indeed. Powered by the same plant which drove CVA-01's replacement, the CVS. I'm fairly familiar with the Bristol Siddeley Olympus. The marinised variant, the TM3B was what we used. It used about 7.5 tonnes of marine diesel per hour at top speed (5600NPT RPM)

The point is that there could have been more if the council had any sort of a marketing/business brain cell between them.

Which they haven't.

much as I like to bash our Wendy biased council its more a London Centric problem
was the same with Wembley , for that money could have had a 200000 seaer stadium out of this world in birmingham or somewhere central but no, had to be in London

Yes.

I actually ran in the 200m that day. Was 3/4 full and was a cracking atmosphere.

However, like most sports, UK Athletics is based in Birmingham so Alexander stadium has had all the investment and Crystal Palace is in London so they claimed it was easier to get marquee athletes to run in London.

Yes Sheffield Council fucked up, but they were hung out to dry by UK Athletics...

Great thread - knowledgeable discussion about naval aviation on the one hand and schadenfreude at the expense of the cockernee cants on the other.
