Can anybody remember us not having a corner in a game like at Derby. Also has there ever been a game with only one corner in it like Saturday.

Fortunately not, as it was just symptomatic of the complete lack of attacking intent from either team.

I do remember us having 28 corners in one game though and we contrived to lose that one 2-0 as well.

(West Ham at the Lane - no idea what year but it was a long time ago. Mark Ward x2 for them I think)

West Ham 89/90. They won the battle on that one and in the return (0-5) we won the war :-) Much to the annoyance of the press who wanted Newcastle/West Ham promoted.

We are abysmal at corners, so I’m not overly worried about not having them, specifically.

I was always amazed late 80s that teams failed to work out our cross it to Stan who flicked on to someone to score .

I believe there’s only ever been 1 football match in the English top 4 tiers with no corners - I think it was in 1953 - maybe Notts Forest v Newcastle but not sure. So when it’s a poor United game I think well we might just equal the record!

The Derby game only had one corner (to Derby) so that’s as near as you can get to the record without equalling it. Pity I wasn’t there to see it 😟

The game with no corners was a 0-0 draw between Portsmouth and Newcastle in 1930-31.

The problem is if you smash it in the box we don't have anyone that has height and ability to get a decent header, apart from maybe Bash/McG although if you get anywhere near the keeper these days the likelihood of giving away a free kick is 95+% if we took it short there wouldn't be enough thought process as to how to make space for someone like Billy to deliver the ball too the best option would probably be to pass out to D and have someone smash it but relying on an accurate pass

Remember the west ham 28, isn't it a record?

True, but when you think of our goalscoring tactic during the Wilder-up years, it was indeed overlapping centrebacks with passes low into the box for either Billy or Leon to capitalise on, or if not, Duffy and Fleck or the far wingback arriving late. We scored so many like that and we were difficult to deal with. Obviously the way to counter that is to stop the overlapping wingback malarkey, which players did by doubling up on the advancing wingback who was usually Norwood's target as soon as he got the ball. Oppositions have got that one covered now and our supporting centrebacks are nowhere to be seen so there is either us boxed in out wide and nothing coming across the box at either head height or low for a tap in. The only way we seem to score goals these days is if either Bogle is involved cutting in or if MGW/Ndayie are digging it out and pressing their players back. Trouble is, as we have seen, neither MGW or Ndaiye are tremendously good at keeping hold of the ball. Much of their endeavours ends in a timely tackle and dispossession. They aren't that good to do what Derby's goalscorer did the other night for their first.

So we are resigned to hopeful punts into their box where Billy, at 35, hasn't the leaping legs to get to it and anyone else capable - the 6'5" Berge for example - neshes the header. That's if the cross isn't overcooked or straight into the keeper's hands, that is.

Life’s greatest mysteries:

Who shot JFK?
Did we land on the moon?
How can someone of Norwood’s passing ability be rubbish at corners?

We might get an answer to the first two.
I thought everyone knew that JFK was accidentally killed by one of the guards in his own car and that was covered up and blamed on others to get the FBI off the hook.

Not many goals are actually scored from corners. Rather like high %age possession stats., they are overrated these days. Both are maybe nice to have, but the modern high speed, high press game has made them much less relevant than they used to be.

We don't attack the by-line, we cross from deep to smallish forwards, because it makes so much sense!

28 corners is the highest number of corners in a match in the English top 4 tiers. I believe the second highest was a Southampton match with 23 and they lost too!

I think we played Dynamo Kiev the week after the West Ham 28-corner match and we had over 20 corners in that match I believe and…we lost 2-1. 😟😳

It used to be a tactic against Rory Delap rather put it out for a corner than a throw in, we had our version too i know a bit unfashionable and not pretty but a bit of industrial play wouldn't go a miss at the moment, especially in midfield we need to toughen and tighten up. Although it would be great to win 7-0 every week with free flowing football I would take 1-0 with a hard to break down team and a bit of hoof.

Didn’t Egan score two in one game this season with headers from Hourihane corners ?
