Cooper

What I've noticed is the teams total confidence in him, when we're passing it along the back line they don't have any hesitation passing it to him even if there's an opposition player near him, although I didn't mind wes we would never pass it to him unless we had to, cooper is a goalkeeper but he's also an outfield player who often, when in possession, stands 5 yards outside his area

To think some wanted us to get that other lad on loan when Cooper was available for £3m. Yes THREE MILLION.

I like to think the sole purpose that twat Josh Windass was born was just to injure Coopers knee so that we had any chance in hell of signing him. 🤣

He commands his area and I think you’re right that there’s total confidence in him

Start at 50m

Don't understand the comments about poor distribution. Some of his distribution last night was superb, it was like having Glenn Hoddle in goal at times. He put a couple out, but I bet this was less than 10% of the total. He was pinging 50 yard passes.

Agreed, I joked about him being our main playmaker during the first half in Shoutbox.

I'm assuming that other keeper on loan was Rushworth, who is hardly playing for Hull.

As I’ve commented before , goalkeeper is probably the one position where the Blades have been most blessed down the many years I’ve been watching us .

This lad is already shaping up to be up there with the very best of them which in my opinion were Burgin , Hodgy and Alan Kelly , the latter being my all time favourite and he is the one Cooper most reminds me of . Calm , assured , great control of his area and a brilliant shot stopper .

His penalty save yesterday was hugely impressive , not only for his judgement in going the right way but the lightning speed at which he got down to it and put such a firm hand on it .

Not wishing to be unkind , a certain goalkeeper who we paid similar money for would probably have been thinking about dropping his left shoulder a little bit by the time the ball hit the back of the net ……

Great signing .

If it hadn’t been for uncertainty around his injury and how he may have recovered from it I think at least 2 or 3 would have been in.
We took the gamble and for once for us, it looks like it’ll pay off significantly.
If we don’t go up, I think we’ll have more trouble hanging onto him than anyone else.
Palace and Fulham were after him but they wanted him as second choice whereas he wanted first team football. It was the right decision by him.

I didn't know that - very brave to reject PL contract - must have full confidence in his knees , which is encouraging for us - if he keeps current form , he'll be courted by more PL Clubs next summer - then it's our choice. Keep or cash in and find another young star.

I bloody love this man, I will go on record to say, despite us having some amazing ones in the past, I have never had more confidence in a keeper.

Hendo was great but he had a mistake or moment of recklessness in him. Tracy was great but again, had a hair brained moment in him and his kicking was awful. Even the brilliant Alan Kelly could sometime be vulnerable to a long ranger and didn't always command his box in the way Tracy could. This lad has it all though, great handling, command of his area, laid back confidence without losing concertation, brilliant shot stopping and he can bloody well play football too, passing like Gordan Cowans.

He will be an England goalkeeper in the next two seasons. Lets enjoy him while we can eh.

Tracey's kicking was brilliant early in his career at United, accurate kicking towards Deane, Whitehurst etc. Howard Wilkinson knew this and always instructed one of the strikers to be close to him to unsettle him whenever the keeper has the ball in his hands.

Blessed?

I counter you, Steve Simonsen, Paul Gerrard, Mark Bunn to name but a few

Really surprised that Liverpool and Manchester City didn't go for Cooper bearing in mind they are looking to replace their current aging goalkeepers. Cooper would probably walk into most premiership teams.
Liverpool have already bought a replacement who's younger than Cooper.

We've had more good than bad I think. The first good keeper I remember was Keithy Waugh. We had some bad/mediocre ones around that era too. Steve Conroy was average, Derek Richardson poor. We were blessed in the Tracey/Kelly years. Recent years, I'd class Ramsdale as bad. Dean Henderson good. Michael Cooper has the potential to be up with the very best.

With a quick throw he could have released Raksakyi a few times while he was unmarked bombing up the wing wanting it, he didn’t he held it and waited then dropped it to his feet and passed it short, assume he’s been instructed to do this, personally I think he should release it earlier sometimes.

I don’t think many blades fans are complaining about his distribution. Certainly I’m not. His passing and kicking off the floor is light years ahead of most of the keepers we’ve had (including Hendo, I would argue).

Apparently, though, if you look at the stats, his distribution is merely ‘excellent’ rather than ‘elite’ (in contrast to his shot stopping, which is ‘elite’). Which is why some were saying a top 6 Prem club probably wouldn’t take him - they want a keeper who is basically an extra sweeper. I think this is a more plausible explanation as to why he didn’t move to the upper Prem, rather than his injury record. Man U, Liverpool etc wouldn’t think twice about taking a ‘risk’ at 2m if they thought he was good enough. Either way, great news for us and he’s probably worth 5-10 times what we paid for him already.

I could believe Fulham etc were interested though and I suspect his eventual level is mid-table Prem (hopefully with us!). I’m not damning him with feint praise there. An Englishman playing constantly at that level is almost certain to get in the England squad and go to a few major tournaments.

On the penalty, he alluded to it in an interview...wasn't judgement, He guessed right...I'm not looking to contradict you...you're right, it was still a brilliant save, I'm taking nothin away from it...
...and on that other goalkeeper you suggest, I rfor one eally hope he's doing OK these days...

Remember the Easter Monday top of the table game away at Leeds? They had a player coming off the pitch, hiding out of sight of the lino and then and waiting to run back on specifically to pressurise the keeper and it worked that day. We got hammered.

I think Dean Henderson was a decent keeper, undeniably made some superb reaction saves, but I think he got cut a lot of slack due to his interaction with the Kop. Because he let some soft goals in, particularly at his near post, very often, in a one on one situation he didn’t seem to know where he was in relation to the goal and left the striker ten foot of unguarded net to aim at.

So, although he was decent, not in the same class as Cooper imo, only Alan Kelly had the same aura about him and inspired a similar level of confidence.

The Leeds player was Bobby Davison who did the same thing at the Lane in the Boxing Day 2-2 draw. Carl Shutt did the same thing at Elland Road fixture in May 1991. Howard Wilkinson didnt bother to use this tactic when Phil Kite or Alan Kelly played in goal because their kicking were not as effective as Tracey's

I agree, as an ex keeper myself, Henderson was, and still is, limited on controlling his 18 yard box.... Cooper is superb in this respect,

Its still difficult to properly assess Cooper, and I don’t think that you can call him a future England keeper until next season in the Premier League, as he doesn’t really have a lot to do in games. This though is to his credit, as the defence has total confidence in him. It’s something that the statisticians can’t measure.
No doubt, he is a top keeper and long may he play for us
