After watching the re-run of the match, the more convinced I am that there was absolutely no way we were going to win Burnley.
Penalty number 1 turned down when Howard ran into the box when bearing down on goal. The only questionable issue about this is was he in the box or just outside? Don't think we got a free kick even if it was outside the box?
Penalty number 2 turned down is where Kyle is clearly fouled.
In a great attacking position sheffield united get into burnley's box, kyle has the speed and goes round the back of burnley's defender. Kyle must have any second been just about to pull the trigger and put a very dangerous pass/cross in when he gets a forearm to the head and bowled over. No foul,no penalty and no contact with the ball from burnley's defender, just a forearm to the head.
It makes me wonder if there is somebody against us because of the westham affair? Hmmm?
We could have had players with broken arms and legs and I don't think we'd have got a carrott all day long.
Yet wardy sent off for two harmless handballs? compared to the foul on kyle the ward incident is nothing, conspiracy, surely not.

It's stranger than the X files, but it is our lot as Blades to believe in Conspiracy theories, but maybe, just maybe it wast to be our day.

i have thought about the conspiracy theory for ages, since warnocks tenure infact,if you constantly give refs/linesmen grief tied in with the tevez/west ham affair which have made the premier league and fa look complete arses, there is going to be at some sort of retribution at some time, warnock never stopped,( remember the semi against arsenal and graham poll)and then we have blackey doing the same thing against the most controversial ref this season leading up to the "biggest" game of the season.

I think we're just damned unlucky when it comes to officials.

We're an unfashionable club which is unable to shake off the "physical" tag we got when Harry Bassett was in charge. Therefore, we cannot be fouled... we merely do the fouling.

Can't disagree with any of this - but I think there's more to it with regards to Monday and Mike Dean. I can only go on what we've seen, which is that although he may be technically proficient (at least according to the FA - though how he can miss TWO nailed on penalties has to raise questions either about his ability or his neutrality) - I would certainly think there's a case to be answered about his temperament. Maybe he's fine in matches between Hartlepool and Walsall, or even Pompey and Boro - but when it comes to high profile, pressure games like Steel City Derbies or Play Off Finals he clearly can't be relied upon to perform. His anal retentative decisions about Wardy and Killa would have Freud writing disertations and as for sending Hendrie off AFTER THE GAME WAS OVER - in an emotive game worth £60M, at the end of a long season - just breathtaking

If we want to make a list of those who bottled it on Monday - Dean surely has to the first name.

Although none of this should be really used as an excuse for our poor performance, I agree with all that you say.

I don't care if we had ten blatant penalties denied, we still played shit. Stop making excuses.

Let's see if when we do get the world cup come to england which grounds get picked.
Sheffield United with their multi - million pound re-development of Bramall lane, with the hotel, new tier on the south stand and upgrading of the kop taking capacity upto 45,000 get pipped for a world cup placing by Leeds rugby union's ground as it is nearer a motorway.
We,ve ruffled that many feathers over the years nowt would suprise me.
Look at all the high up people at the FA that love us. Sir trev, Ex-wendy chairman Richards etc etc.
Yeah we played shite monday, but a penalty is a penalty.
Conspiracy surely not!!!

Yer all wrong..............;)

Sum say the truth is McScrooge told cheap as chips to lets Burnley win or he wud be flogged to near death by 'our terry' ........ if we win tha wud have to go and i wud have to spend sum £££££££'s ........no much better we stay in the fizzy pop reduce the wage bill ..... sell off the Kyles an Killa an whoever else i can get a few bob for ! MONEY MONEY MONEY.

Wud explain the no show by the Blades at Wemberleeeeeeeeeeeeee.

:D

penalty given and scored extra time and pens - win on pens who gives a shit about how we played Blackwells a hero in that case and everyone raves about how well he's done having to sell those players and only been there for 1 season.
Refs fault i think so

Who's making excuses? I recognise we didn't play well - and that we didn't deserve to win - - but that doesn't mean that Dean had a good game. His performance was (again) poor and there can only be limited reasons for this -
Either he's not good enough - (but the FA rate him as one of the best) - his temperament let him down on the big day (my case) - or he's biased (hence posting this onto this tread).

I'm increasingly of the opinion that we'll need to see video refs as in rugby and cricket if we can't get referees who are capable of getting it right - especially in games worth £60M. If not - how long before a club sues the FA for losses incurred through it's referees being sub-standard. Not a future anyone would want to see - but this is an issue the FA have to have the balls to take on.

Not excuses. Just recognising that it wasn't only our lads who didn't turn up on the day - and asking why.

Whoa there angry newbie!

This is a discussion forum where we discuss things... we don't just tell people to shut up. Not really very neighbourly is it?

By all means voice your opposing view, but there are ways to do it nicely :)

Ref partly to blame yes but really most of the blame lays with the team.

I don't get what you mean......

Sell what players?

Hero?

What?

I think what he is trying to say is that if we had been given one of the pens we might have gone on to win therefore no one would of mentioned that we played shit and Blackwell would of been a hero for getting us up in one full season in charge.

There is a fine line in football between winning a losing and sometimes the ref can decide which side of the line we fall on which is a great shame.

No one in the media seems to have mentioned the pens, but yet look at all the stuff after the Chelsea game and their pens disallowed.

Burnley were the better side on Monday and fair play to them they deserved it more than us, however if we had been given a pen and scored it would of been a different game.

Sorry, I wasn't being nasty nor did I tell anyone to shut up. I'm just extremely tired of people always blaming the referee when we lose. Burnley were the better team and they deserved to win on the day - just accept it and move on.

I doubt we would even have scored a penalty if we had been given one. Who would have taken it? The way Cotterill was playing he would have gone arse over tit on the run up and hoofed the ball out of Wembley stadium.

Well we will never know will we.

Its all ifs and buts, time to move on and get on with next season.

For a start I thought the Killa sending off was right at the time; it was only when I saw the TV afterwards when I could see that it wasn't the foul Dean (and I) thought it was. His foot was still way too high anyway, so I can still understand the decision. The second yellow for Wardy was totally deserved. Had it been rugby it would have been a blatant knock-on.

Hendrie's red card for dissent/foul and abusive language may well have been harsh, but it certainly isn't the first time it has happened (I remember a pig being sent for it - Palmer?).

I'm not saying he wasn't poor, but we were abjectly poor.

But it has always been like that! That's what sport's all about! Got to agree with the Chelsea comparison though.

Cotterill had already been subbed by the time of the second appeal, but that's just being picky ;) I'd love for there to be a decent conspiracy theory, but let's face it, we were the worse of two bad sides. Let's just get on with the fact that we've got to go to Peterboghorror and The Land That Time Forgot (Scunny).

But I would still say that to apply the "letter of the law" in such an uncompromising way in key games when emotions are running high is the mark of a poor ref. He's probably very good at Norton Woodseats versus Barlow Kingston Rovers (or maybe even us against Peterborough for that matter) - but has been crap when the stakes have been high. I don't think he has the temperament for big occassions - he's too anally retentive!!

You know I'm right - cos it's my round next!!! :D:D

Well I suppose none of us actually knows what was said, but my point remains that we were the cause of our own downfall, not the perceived failings of a referee. We created absolutely sod all (as did they, bar two efforts really) and got the just desserts.

He may have been shite, but we were worse.

Oh, and mine's a Landlord please ;) (if it's bloody on)

Don't disagree at all - My only point throughout all this has been to say that Dean was crap and - in my opinion - temperamentally unsuited to referee such a key game cos he can't adapt his approach to big occassions :o

I'm not disputing that we were crap, that we deserved to get beat, that it was our fault, or that we need to look forwards from here - I'm just saying Dean is anally retentive - and in a big way!!! :D

Just to get back on track a bit, the second penalty we did'nt get. As I see it Kyle got a forearm smash to the side of his head a WWW wrestler would have been proud of. Does dean think that's ok? Do the FA think that's ok.
I just cannot believe we did'nt get owt for it. Absolutely incredible. That's nothing to do with how shite we were. It was one of a very few attacks we had. Maybe if said player had'nt been kungfoo'd off the ball we would have scored?
Like I say, a penalty is a penalty, or is it not when it's against that trouble causing sheff utd?

If Mike Dean had the eyesight of Stevie Wonder and the sense of Peter Andre it wouldn't have mattered a damn if we'd scored one more goal than Burnley did. Yes, Dean was shite, but scoring a goal from open play or getting a free kick at least somewhere in the same postal code as the Burnley goal would have made any penalties not given irrelevant.
We can make as many excuses as we like, but it all boils down to one thing. Burnley were better than we were. We don't have to like it, but it's true.

I don't think anyone is doubting Burnley were better than us and deserved it, but that was a pen and had it been a Media Darling club, Dean would have been all over the papers the follwoing day for not allwoing it. Martin Samuel will be loving it!

If there had been a conspiracy don't you think it would have been in our favour to shut us up after TevezGate? We get promoted and the FA hope we finally shut up about it, sweeping it all neatly under the carpet......
