Its not much to do with style of play, but it was stylish of Clough the younger to avoid shaking hands with Leeds Utd. personnel and sit out the match in the camera gantry at Elland Road. Or am I romanticising?

I admired him for that show of loyalty to his Dad.

Distinctly underwhelmed, but fingers crossed it works out.

Blades get their man - Nigel Clough appointed as new team manager

Nigel Clough is the new manager of Sheffield United Football Club.

Clough, 47, takes over with immediate effect and, following a detailed briefing from interim manager Chris Morgan, will be in charge of team affairs for Saturday's home game against Crewe.

United's co-chairman, Kevin McCabe, commented: "Nigel has a tremendous pedigree in the game. He brings undoubted experience and can provide stability, energy and confidence to the playing side drawing on his 11 years at Burton Albion followed by over four and a half years with Derby County in the Championship."

Co-chairman Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud added: "Nigel was the clear, first choice of the board. He brings an approach to the game that is well suited to what we are trying to achieve at Sheffield United. Nigel has enjoyed managerial success in the game. He knows how to inspire first team players to give their all and has a proven track record of making an academy a key ingredient to the club's success. We count ourselves lucky to have Nigel aboard."

Capped 14 times by England as a player, Clough represented Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Manchester City with distinction before cutting his teeth in management with Burton Albion, guiding the Brewers into the Football League. He took over at Derby County in January 2009, helping them escape relegation in his first season, whilst in the last two campaigns he has improved the final league position of the Rams.

Both Mr McCabe and Prince Abdullah acknowledged the role of Chris Morgan as interim manager describing his contributions as "first class" and providing a solid base from which Nigel Clough can begin his management era at Bramall Lane.

Prince Abdullah added: "Chris Morgan embodies what it means to be a Blade. Chris has a can-do attitude, a fighting spirit, and a gritty resolve. Add to this that he is a fierce competitor and a true gentleman, and you begin to get the picture. During these last three matches, Chris awoke in our lads a belief. That's a foundation we can build on."

Ex-skipper Chris Morgan, who will continue his responsibilities for the club's U21s, will remain as part of the coaching team being assembled by Nigel Clough, which will feature Gary Crosby and Andy Garner, part of his coaching team at Derby and previously Burton. Nigel's brother, Simon, is joining United's scouting structure.

I'm much much happier with this appointment than I was when Weir was appointed which quite frankly had disaster written all over it. He wasn't my first choice that was Pulis but now we've hired him I'm quite happy to give him my full support. I think a lot of people underestimate what he did at Derby. They improved year-on-year with a small budget. He also made some excellent sighings. Do I think he's the man to take us up? Not sure. But im sure he'll improve the squad and we will start to rise up the league again.

What happened to having a break from the game to enjoy some much needed family time? One can only assume that Mrs Clough and the kids have told him that won't be necessary!

How many games before Clough becomes Chuff, I wonder? Let's hope not.

It's interesting reading the views of Derby fans. Different time, different place of course but his 'failings' don't sound too dissimilar to 3 of our last 4 sacked managers.

So now we start our charge to mid table obscurity..............

I hope im proven wrong!

Wrong in what respect?

As we're in the relegation zone I would have thought mid table "obscurity" is as good as it's going to get this season. I assume if we don't end in mid table (and you're proven wrong) it's because we've been relegated.

However, people choose to ignore how dissimilar his successes are compared to 3 of our last 4.

How about his ability to actually play academy players for a start? He has given debuts to players aged 16 and 17 if they are good enough.

How about his ability to trim the squad yet no threat of relegation?

How about how he holds players accountable?

Hello folks a Rams fan here.
I think Nige will see you right. He does like his sides to play football and not hoofball. As others have said he did lack a bit of a plan b at times and would get very negative when we where infront in the last 20mins or so of games, but then on the other hand we did beat Millwall 5.1 away this year so can hardly call him negative. Biggest fault for me was his putting players on the naughty step and we hardly ever saw them again, regardless of how well they where playing.
Hope he does well for you guys anyway, and i will be watching from the outside with interest

Every time I make myself feel positive, somthing thing comes along to completely depress me.

Would it make you feel better to go and find a board and tell them all about our recent successful managers

Ah, I get it. I shouldn't fear having my balls crushed in a vice, I should be delighted that they aren't being.

I get yer.

It appears a step up so you have to be happy. Having said that we all thought Weir was a sensible appointment and that turned out bad didn't it.

Lets see what happens.

We have been told we have just had "game changing" investment. That can't possibly mean that we still have to take the scraps off the dole queue. Surely waking up and smelling the coffee means that we could expect to at least try and attract the likes of Steve Evans from Rotherham, Garry Johnsons from Yeovil, - managers who've demonstrated success albeit at our low level.

Having just paid the price for appointing a manager with no track record, let's not appoint someone who's had 15 season's of effort with not one success to his name.

Surely, surely we can do better? Failure to do so will put the nail in the coffin of this "game changing" investment.

Well Fergie didn't want the job and Paisley is dead so who else would have met your wild expectations to join our superb club sitting in the doldrums of the third tier of English Football? Cloughs dad perhaps?

Wow, it's sarcasm time! Perhaps if I only had to endure it once a season, I'd be more realistic too :)

As I've said before a few times, I'd have tried to get Cox from the mighty Mansfield, Evans from gargantuan Rotherham, or Johnson from the supertanker that is Yeovil. I hoped our game changing investment would propel Sheffield United to the level of being able to tackle such superpowers. The clue was in the very post you responded to.

Being serious, I wanted emphasis on proven results rather than philosophy. As a paying customer, I'm both entitled to that opinion, and to be disappointed that my very low expectations have been lowered still further. I will be delighted to be proved wrong.

Better than not having a manager. Better than Weir. Better than Heath or McKewen. I'll say this: he may steady the boat a little. We might halt the slide and win some games. But we won't get to the top level. Clough doesn't have it in him, and will struggle to attract players to get us there.

Standby for nowt fancy.

You know what's so brilliant about football?

Absolutely nobody knows how this will turn out, it's a complete unknown. Everyone can have their opinion but it's all just guesswork.

Could be a good appointment, could be a bad one. Let's just wait and see.

Absoutlely spot on. There's little correlation between expectation and reality. Let's hope that trend continues. :)

I wish him all the best.
The players have now got to get there acts together and work for the manager, and most importantly-enjoy themselves on the pitch and play with a smile on there face.

Good luck in your new job Mr Clough.

May you continue to develop this squad of players that have been, for the most part, cleverly and astutely assembled by the last fella !!

Sounds a bit like David Weir. Apart from the 5-1 bit of course :(
