It depends on the situation. If the defenders are struggling against pace and skill, we could push Ward up front and bring Little on for 20 minutes to provide the quality. If they’re not, it’s probably time to try something different with a big battering ram like Henderson up front. Then we also have the option of going 4-3-3 with Ward and Creswell pushed well up. I’d rather have 70 minutes of the defence being run ragged than 20!
It must surely be the aim to have a squad where we have the option of having a pacey first eleven, and then having even more pace on the bench to allow substituting any underperforming player (even a quick one) without necessarily having to change the prefered game plan.
This season we've sometimes had three or four full backs on the bench and as you and Highbury point out, we've had to chose if we want to have pace in the first eleven OR on the bench.
