[Confirmed] Britton back to Swansea?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him go on a free if he's going back to Swansea. They aren't going to shell out any cash to get back someone they gave away so recently.

I think getting (my guess) £500k a year off the wage bill is the priority and I wouldn't want the lack of a transfer fee to mean we miss out on the chance of getting someone who looks like he'll be an expensive bit part player off the books.

I think the suggestion is that we are that desperate to free up his wages :( Will he be on one of the best paid at the club?

I would think so yes.

I think the fact he doesn't want to stay might be a big factor. An expensive player who isn't happy is an easy target for moving on.

On the BBC now so seems to be gaining traction.

I despair at the events at this club sometimes. I'm not blaming anyone here, but it really does amaze me that a player of such quality found it so tough here and will go back and dazzle in Swansea. A club aiming for promotion.

But we are the best run club in the known universe and so we must accept this as another key decision in the "jam tomorrow" master plan that is almost reaching fruition.
Nice glass of Bollinger anyone?

I know this post is positively moist with sarcasm, but aside from our current debts, we don't have stupid people in charge. Birch in particular is far from an idiot.

With that in mind, how on earth can such an obvious error be allowed to happen if it actually does.

Which, we need the disclaimer, it actually hasn't thus far.

As Bob says, it's another brilliant deal done by the club, the 785th in a row. Can't work out why this has yet to manifest itself in league placings, but, hey, we just need to be more patient.

Now play fair, I've said I don't want him to go and I want us to keep him. Look back at my posts on this subject.

But what I have said is IF he wants to leave then there are positives this time around in that he hasn't settled and he is a big earner.

I still think Reid, Britton and Willo is my kind of midfield 3.

While I can see the positives in the transfer; akin to spotting a piece of foil in your dog's shit the day after it got into the Christmas chocolates, it doesn't mean I want to celebrate such a deal.

Agreed it certainly wouldn't be one I would celebrate, it would be another misses opportunity for me. Another one where I thought we were moving in a new direction only for us to change our minds after a few months.

Especially someone who might displace our favourite non-footballer? That would never do. We'd sooner be relegated with him than succeed without.

Who says he is going for free?

"And the Evening Post understands Britton is close to rejoining Swansea just seven months after quitting to join Sheffield United on a free transfer when his contract expired last summer"

Quick question Pinchy ,is tackling part of football ?

Sounds like a rhetorical one to me! Of course it is. Good players do it well. They win the ball cleanly, without giving away countless free-kicks, penalties, corners and throw-ins [throws-in to be strictly accurate]. They retain possession. They have a think. They then pass the ball to a team-mate. Some of them can control a football, run with it, beat a man and do something remotely creative as well.

Be lucky to get a straight answer on that one Sitters (other than Monty's shit blah blah blah). In Pinchy's football utopia, all 11 are ball playing prima donnas to whom a skill such as tackling is as welcome as a dose of clap.

Britton leaving on a free would only confirm what we already knew. We have given away unbelievably silly contracts to players, well above their worth. We're now trying to undo the mess we created, which will mean offloading with some embarrassment.

Food for thought. Would anyone be bothered if we offloaded Evans on a free? It would be the best bit of business we've done in years, and he cost £3M.

If Micky doesn't fancy him or Leon can't settle, than I'm not overly gutted by the potential move.

He can keep posession and pass the ball very well, he's also more than capable of regularly punting the ball to an opponent, it's not as if everything he touches turns to a chance on goal.

I don't think he's got all the outstanding attributes that his wages and bonuses couldn't be used to strengthen, he's on a fair whack.

Providing it frees up funds that are re-used on strengthening the team, I'm not as gutted as many other sales in Blades history have made me.

He probably will end up going on a free. I would prefer to see us get something back for Ched, but unless he starts a prolific scoring run I cant see anyone being prepared to pay a decent fee for him. He showed signs of improvement recently but has gone quiet again the last couple of games. Unless he starts banging them in regularly United will eventually have to think about letting him go just to free up wages.

General question. How long do people think it will take us to obtain (not borrow), a player of equivalent touch and passing ability as Britton?

Ha, loving the fact that Ched is still getting hammered despite playing well of late and still as a lone striker.

Tell you what, let him go on a free and we'll buy him for 3 million again in a few seasons.

I think you missed my point. And it wasn't the fact that I think he is talentless. It's that if you pay someone £20K per week and they're actually worth £5K, nobody is going to pay to take them off your hands. Give them away for free and you might be talking......

I'm a fan of Britton, but I question his worth to us right now. I think he represents the type of player we'd like to think we'd need, not what we actually do. We're in a big scrap this season and hopefully to a lesser extent next. Maybe, given his wages, the maths just don't add up.

So to answer, I think we'll struggle to replace him. But I'm not sure that we want or need to, anythime soon. :(

I'm not devastated he's gone, but I find it so frustrating that a player capable of being part of a successful team is going out of pure expediency.

We've had two years since 'reprofiling' began. I'd no problem with it then, but FFS this is the slowest nettle grasping of all time!

**grumble grumble**

I totally agree. I think it's the direction the club is going in and not where it's at that sets the mood of the fans. I would be great to be actually building rather than still re profiling.

Just remember, you had the priveledge of seeing Gary Naysmnith wear the shirt, and all for about £20K per week. Doesn't that make it worthwhile?

:D

I trust, Alco, that you are including the three ludicrously expensive mistakes that everyone was so delighted about last Summer? Offloading in triplicate required, don't you think?

JD has a point here. It would be a shame to let someone go who is so comfortable on the ball, can pass and is always available bceause 'it is not the right time' or 'he doesn;t fit in now'. What about loaning him out for the rest of the season? We could then make an assessment of whether he could fit into our plans next year. If he is 'the right man, wrong time' (as many are pointing out) then let's loan him out. Worst case we lose him on a free during the summer. Best case we either get a fee for him or he starts playing in a team, with a decent midfield and starts to contribute a lot more.

There's obviously more to this than meets the eye though (i.e clauses in contract, other aspects - such as fees for appearences etc)
