I was certain Adkins would get us promoted when we appointed him. But within weeks that was tempered and concern began to set in.
I don't buy that it's the boards fault all the time. We've had very little choice but to sell our best players, it's what happens when you're in League 1 this long.
We're the biggest club in this division and pay higher wages than nearly all of them too (Wigan perhaps the only exception to this). We are an attractive option at this level. Yet, teams with less resource seem to be more adept in the transfer market than us. Though this isn't hard.
What on earth was Nigel Adkins doing not signing a goalkeeper and some defenders? Did he genuinely look at any of our games from last season as part of his preparation? Consult with Morgan and the like? What was going on this summer? This mistake was gross negligence, the subsequent results make it an almost sackable offence. His CV means that we is being given (and rightly so in my opinion) more time. But this isn't going to get any better, certainly not before January when we may (finally) bring in players in the right positions. Worryingly though his signings thus far have been poor and he may have given the board a reason to consider holding back some funds from him (after all, we gave Clough far too much to spend in the end, it was almost Robsoneque wastage of funds relative to our current predicament).
Ultimately the biggest reason we're failing though is because the players are a bunch of losers with no ambition. I'm saddened to see the deterioration of Matt Done, my favourite Blades player because of his exceptional work rate, determination (for the team and himself) and his drive to win football games. But it seems the rot is spreading and now even he seems to look lethargic and disinterested.
Ultimately the difference between ourselves and Southampton? We have a poor mix of young, arrogant players who seem to think they've already made it or are happy where they are (McGahey, Scougall, McNulty, Baxter), old players who have never achieved anything, lack the drive to win anything, and are incredibly lucky to be where they are (Howard, Collins, Higdon, Sammon) and injury prone players (Harris, Flynn, Coutts, Wallace to name a few).
What's left is Brayford (injured), Freeman, Adams (even he has had silly indiscretions this season) and Billy Sharp. Murphy and Maguire were sold. So this leaves us with only 4 players, with the attitude and ability to walk into a Championship squad and add value above "emergency cover."
