As with last year I have been through all of our fixtures for this season, and come up with 3 benchmark sets of results which would achieve 3 different objectives:-
a chance of the playoffs (71 points);
almost certain playoff achievement (78 points).
almost certain automatic promotion (90 points).
After each match game I will now post 3 graphs. (After 4 matches maybe our season's story is starting to emerge?). From now on, at popular request, I am also including Graph 3, which will compare with Wilder's 2 Championship seasons.
Graph 1 shows our good progress against my 3 benchmark sets. With 7 points from the 4 games we are ahead of my results necessary for the playoffs, and just one point (away at Watford) behind my Auto Promotion line.
Graph 2 shows our progress against time (not against the same opponents) compared to last year’s results with Slav and Hecky. On 7 points this year, we are well ahead of the one solitary point that we had with Slav (after playing 4 games). We only got 2 points from our first 5 games last year, so we are certainly destined to stay comfortably ahead for the time being! So far, in his 59 Championship matches Hecky has averaged just over 1.9 points a game - which would give us about 87 points for a full season - probably 3rd or 4th.
Graph 3 shows our progress against the 2 Wilder Championship seasons 17/18 (10th) and 18/19 (2nd). In both of those seasons we had 6 points from 4 games - so we are just one point ahead of both of Wilder's seasons.
My main thought after the Sunderland game is that anything is possible. We have the talent to blow anybody away - Anel, McAtee and Khadra, as additions to the squad, mean the quality is there in depth. Equally, Egan and Norwood's frequent over-casual passes could still cost us the points that we need.
