Compared with last season...

We've had a dip but we now have a nice cushion and are back above the yellow line.

Unfortunately, we're above the orange line, not the yellow! ;) We are above the blue 'average over 10 years for play-off place'.

Know what you meant, though. It's looking a bit like last season, too little too late for the autos but it is surely inconceivable that we'll miss out on the play-offs. The 6th and 'chasing pack' are doing the job for us.

Don't get too excited about how we're closing in on 2nd place. That's due to MKD faltering. Can I add a line for third? No, because...

  • By this Tuesday (or next Saturday latest), Preston will be in second place and...
  • I'm too fucking lazy!

Hmm. Those wheels are beginning to look a bit loose...

We can now only lose three. When we go to 'now we can only lose two' expect melt down.

Look at the red line compared to the green line (assume green is us last season?) and we are roughly following the same patern although last season everyone thought we finished strongly.

Still a long way to go.

If we miss out on second I agree with your comment that it would be best for us in the play offs that BC and PNE go up.

Yes, green is us last season and, after an utterly disastrous start under Weir, we are looking as if we'll finish on similar points as last season. Progress?

Last season, from Game 34 (which is the same stage as we'll reach this Saturday) our 'strong finish' consisted of:

D,L,W,L,D,D,W,W,D,W,L,W. Hardly the stuff of serious promotion contenders.

As we are going I cannot see us getting to the end of the season with only 3 more defeats ( given the amount of soft draws we have given away probably even 3 defeats would be too many). November and December did this season for us 10 points out of an available 24.

1) We have derbies to come which is not is our favour as we have not done well in them save for the Donny win so I expect we will drop points in those.
2) Whilst we don't have to play the leaders we do have to play 7 of the 9 teams immediately below us ( Doncaster, Chesterfield, Barnsley, Bradford, Fleetwood, Oldham, Port Vale)
3) Fortress Bramall Lane it isn't - day out in front of a big crowd it is - only 26 points gathered out of an available 48.
4) We haven't managed a month all season without a league defeat.
5) The best we have managed all season is 2/3rds of the available points in any month (39 points left - so a repeat of our best so far this season would only net us 26 points, putting us on 89 points - which won't be enough for automatic this season I don't think and I don't expect us get that many either).
6) Despite an apparent surplus of midfielders we are looking incredibly thin in midfield and we have started playing hoofball with midgets.

Automatics are dead in my expectations and even hopes now. I expect Preston to get 2nd. Playoffs is by no means a certainty.

Speechless...

However, play offs are beginning to look dodgy. Just two games ago, we had a 'cushion' of eight points to 6th. Now it's down to 3 points...

'Nuff said...

The pack has all but caught us (sixth - Barnsley - is 'hiding' behind the seventh line - both have 53 pts. from 36 games). Out of the top six by Tuesday? Oh, yes.

Three points is three points... Our orange 'trend line' is beginning to look good - just scraping over the historical blue 74 pts. average to scrape into the play-offs.

I posted recently that we are 'a million miles away from promotion'. Seems I was wrong. Bristol, MKD, Swindon and Chesterfield have shown what's really needed at this stage of the season. Set up for an away point, did we? This is as bad as the Crewe defeat 14 months ago. Progress? Not from where I'm sitting.

New boss Paul Sturrock speaks:

"Losing is as habit forming as winning and we've got to break that mould now." Sure we can help you with that, Paul! :D

Pretty bog-standard fare as ever. Christ, we miss Flynn on that wing. If only we had someone like Campbell-Ryce...

All set and ready to go! I'm doing it on a game-by-game basis & will probably post around game 8 (when the table has settled down and beginning to take shape). Anyway, while understanding your impatience, what if we lose to Bury, Colchester & Bradford?

Then I'll be buying some warm socks, so I'm all set for some 'shoes off' action.

Then it will make for a more interesting chart. Flatlining in first is going to be pretty dull
