Looking at the upcoming fixtures, you could possibly believe that United have a better than even opportunity to knock on the door of the automatic places.

Sat 10 Dec - Rochdale. (H) Bumping along in the basement and not the most impressive team of late. Expect a 2-0 win for us, really.

Sat 17 Dec - Bournemouth. (A) Surprised everyone by beating Wycombe, but in actual fact, inconsistent and weak in too many areas. Expect a win, possibly by a goal given our lack of firepower and failure to dominate. We'd better fucking do, because I expect to go to this one with jnr pommpey (now 24, readers. It's been a while since he was mascot at the Pompey vs Us/linesman sparked out game)

Tues 27 Dec - Notts County. (H) The only real threat to a run of results before the New Year. But we're at home, it's during the Christmas break, we could top 22,000 ... what's to go wrong, eh?

Sat 31 Dec - Hartle-ma-pool. (H) Jeff Stellings babies. Beaten at home twice recently. Again, unimpressive and inconsistent. I'd expect us to beat them in honesty.

Mon 02 Jan - Carlisle United. (A) I'd say this is the only game we'd need to come away from with a draw to be happy. It's doable, because they aren't that good.

Sat 07 Jan - Yeovil Town. (H) Come on. Do you really expect me to predict anything else than a win for this?

Sat 14 Jan - Bury. (A) Again, a banker. Despite their recent run, they aren't better than us on paper, are they?

Sat 21 Jan - Charlton, (A) The first game I expect United to lose, although we haven't done bad at the Valley in recent years.

Now that sounds optimistic, to say the least, but even with the wind behind us, you'd imagine us by the time we kick off against Charlton to be on at least 50 points, if not more.

Let's see what the fuck happens, eh?

Well done pommpey, tha's gone an cursed it now :)

Was looking forward to singing jingle bells and celebrating round Bournemouth too.

In all seriousness though, we need to be targeting a decent points haul over this period.

If we beat Torquay next week then the Yeovil match will have to be re-arranged as 7th Jan is 3rd round day

We'll be top of the pile come Christmas Day once Beattie starts scoring like a mad man.

:easy:

Here we go again.

Cover you chips lads, because I need a piss. That series of games would look very different if Ched hadn't scored today. Another couple of performances like this afternoon and we'll be lucky to be in the play off spots when we next see Charlton.

Going ok so far, I would certainly have taken 35 points by the end of november at the start of the season. And the next few games certainly give us an opportunity to push on. Bring on BT now, him and ched should be a great combination.

Tarqs ... perhaps you didn't check my Ironymeter.

I actually expect one, maybe two wins, two maybe three draws and the rest just woeful fuck-ups.

I love United, me.

The main thing with this division is that there are many teams who are on their day capable of beating any of the others, while also capable of being fucking awful. This list includes us, and as such there are no more "gimmes" for us any more, otherwise we'd be pasting shite teams like Chezvegas, rather than scraping 1-0 wins.

Still, I've got some whisky, and MOTD is on when all the women's programmes finally fucking finish, so it's not all doom and gloom.

It could be worse, you could the reading the forums version of pensioners heading off down a hill at breakneck speed in a bathtub!

You havent got the hang of this supporting Sheffield United lark have you?

call me Mr Optimistic but as always i expect to win ALL of those games and everyone till may, we have had a sticky spell where results were shit, performances were shit and still we are within touching distance of auto promotion.
a little boost with beattie signing and maybe a few goals and (Flatulant) Bobs your uncle.
pessimism be damned, the blades are going UP.

SV is right that there are no 'gimmes' in this league and we should not assume their will be. That said, the division is poor and most are beatable. We are not very good, but we are better than most. Now that Wilson has gone back to basics, I think we stand a much better chance of going on a good run. All those games look very winnable. I think if we keep it tight, like we have done in the last few games, then we'll continue to do well. It sounds silly, but if you don't concede then you don't lose. The last few games we've cut out the silly mistakes and unforced errors. We're not playing that well, but are winning. The fact is that the division is very poor and a little bit of quality will win you games. If we keep it tight, then with the likes of Quinn, Evans, Williamson and Lowton we have match winners, or people that can make something happen. This is where our success came from earlier in the season. Being rock solid and then having just a little bit of quality (for this division) to nick the game.

Unfortunately I do not think we are good enough for automatic promotion and don't expect us to go much higher than where we are now. As we approach the half way mark of the season I think it is safe to say we are better than most. However I feel that Huddersfield and Charlton are significantly better than us. I'd put us in the same bracket as Wednesday and probably MK Dons and Notts County, in that we are slightly better than the rest. I hope I get proved wrong, but can't see it.

Regardless of the fixtures, the comings and goings in January will have a big say on what happens.

Indeed, if Wilson brings in a couple more Porters or JLF's and we see Quinn and Ched out of the door, then lord help us.
