Probably Sept 1964. Doc Pace out of action for quite a time since August due to a stomach problem, when he got better in December he was sold to Notts County. Alan Birchenall had just got into the team and in his only second game he scored both goals in the 2-0 win at S6. Barry Wagstaff and Alan Woodward made their debuts in October 1964, Woody getting the regular spot for the rest of the season instead of Allchurch and ahead of John Docherty

Socks?

Should they be red (my preferred choice), black or white or red & white hooped, or red with 2 white bands on the turnover?

It's a generation thing, I reckon. Whichever was worn when you watched in your formative years, tends to be a favourite. AS I started watching in the early 70s I prefer white socks. Those slightly older who started in the 60s might well prefer red socks, same for those who began in the Edwards era. Most of the 90s through to 2010 will have seen mostly black socks, so the younger element may prefer black.

As long as the shirts are red and white stripes, the shorts are black, the socks aren't so important, but white says Sheffield United to me (red says Sunderland).

Like Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, black or white works for me.

hey, whats with all the tomfoolery going on with all these red n white stripes on here?
