Before the great shut-down we had one of those 'favourite ever player' debates in The Sheaf View
Now we are all in our 60's so have seen a fair few come and go
Well I stated Colin Morris to which I was challenged with what about Jones, Sherman etc. and so on and some puzzled looks
So my point is that Morris never really got the credit that he deserves - great little winger who created goals for Edwards and scored a few himself

Colin Morris was a fine player. However I think I'm correct in saying most of his appearances were in the bottom 2 divisions.

I realise there's always the argument that you can only play against the opposition that's put in front of you but there are many players who you'll remember (by your age) who delivered at a higher level.

Fantastic footballer and one I stick in my Blades all time fav team. Not necessarily because they were considered the best players for Utd, but because they entertained me

Remember plenty who didn't ;) - fair point mind, but he's up there for entertainment value IMO

He joined us during the 81-82 season when we smashed div 4 and I think left around 1988 so I think he played as much in div 2 for us as he did in the lower two divisions. I don’t have the stats.

A great player as we picked ourselves up from rock bottom. A decent bloke too with a nice family, as I found when I delivered his milk on a Saturday morning and collected the bill on a Monday. Poor old Colin was the only one I'd keep going back to every week. Bollocks to the money, I just wanted a quick chat.

Sadly he had a break (leg?) mid 80s and was never quite the same player afterwards. He lost a bit of pace and confidence.

Good memories of a very tidy player.

Had a quick chat with Keith Edwards about 4 years ago at Lees Hall Golf Club. Asked how Colin was and said that Keith and Colin were my heroes back then. Had great times watching them play. Colin had great balance, great crosser of the ball and could take a good penalty kick. Remember going to Oldham in 85 and winning 5-0, Colin ripped them a new arsehole. Colin went to the Burnley v Hull game where Hull had to win 3-0 to pip us to promotion. Hull won 2-0, radio interviewed Colin after the game who was so emotional he could hardly speak. Top guy Colin, hope you and your family are well.

Loved him but when it comes to talking about greats it should be about players who were brilliant for the club in the top tier. I loved Edwards too but it has to be said that he hasnt scored for any clubs in the top tier. Morris played only 10 top tier games and that was for Burnley in the mid 1970s.

There are quite a few players that were better than him even though he was a great player and provided Edwards with great opportunities

Woodward, Currie, Salmons, Reece, Dearden, Eddy were all better in the era before Morris IMO

Peterborough away 1982 he was great that night, did he get 2 goals? 7k plus Blades there on a Tuesday night, what a great atmosphere.

Excellent player. Formed a partnership with Edwards that was unstoppable and a joy for us Blades.
He wanted to stay and play for Bassett but it wasn't to be.
I went to that one at Oldham Hillsboro Blade. Away wins like that, nowt better.

Yes, he did play at the level he was signed to play in, but what we saw whilst he was with us was a very talented, entertaining winger of the old school.

Sometimes he had defenders in knots, his play was that good. Whether he could have played at a higher level so effectively, well it's too late now, we'll never find out, but my take is that Morris would have performed admirably at a higher level. In a better team Morris would have shown far more consistency, and his effectiveness would have shone.....just my view you understand.

When I was in junior school I used to tell the other kids that Colin Morris was my uncle.

Just thought I’d throw that random one into tne mix.

By the way, he wasnt !!

I can still picture Morris' part in the injury time winner at the Lane v Wigan in the run into the 81-82 title season. I think they were top and we were second, 0-0 going into injury time, Matthews sprayed the ball out to Morris on the right wing, he scampered past the left back (he was always described as 'scampering past full backs' back then lol) and crossed from the bye line, inch perfect cross for Edwards to steer home in front of a jubilant Kop. What a night that was.

Gave me a free ticket at outside players entrance once at eastville.. cheers colin..think we won 1-0..don't know who scored..possibly him..

Reckon Morris had two and a bit season's in the lower divisions with us, then 4 seasons in the second tier. The time when Porterfield brought Wigley in to replace him, autumn 1985, Morris was brilliant, and tbf he was always one of our best players in his time at the Lane.

Really underrated player. Good crosses, dribbler and an eye for a goal. Made so many goals for Edwards. Used to take a good penalty although he missed a few also (most of any United players but had to take a lot for that stat). Also used to buy contact to win a lot of the pens!

His weak points were his lack of pace and aggression but a good technical player non the less. Along with Edwards and Stancliffe maybe the three best servants and players from 82 ish to 88 and Bassett's days.

Good man and great family too.

Grew up and went to School with both his sons in the mid to late 80s.

Used to stay at his house also every few months for the weekend when he moved to Scarborough.

Now living in Portugal with his good wife Linda. Lee who played for us of course, coaches in the States in minor league Football.

1-1 draw in December 1983. Morris scored with a penalty. We lost 2-1 in previous season, Trusson scored.

My first ‘favourite player’ when I started going to the Lane. Watching him get a hat-trick against Bolton was the game that had me hooked.

He was also one of the players who played in that dreadful play-off second leg against Bristol City that looked genuinely bothered and put everything into it.

Also remember a cracking night under the lights in the Milk Cup against the Everton team that went on to win it (and the league the following season). Think Morris put us one up after a bunch of flat caps near us in the John Street stand were getting on his back for lacking bottle. On a separate note, that was a great atmosphere that night.

Talking of players who didn't get the credit they deserved, I'd put Billy Dearden in that bracket as well. No one ever worked harder than Billy in a Blades shirt.

He was gutted we went down as he knew that was the end of his playing days at the Lane. Bassett actually offered him a deal but with relegation it was only a years contract so he moved on and we signed Alan Roberts that summer.
