The husband/wife would have pre-dated the Collins twins and my wife is now wracking her brains to think of their surname , it's bugging her enormously . She has suggested a glass of wine may help her remember.

I bet everyone else is finding this riveting !
Their daughter was called Jan

Indeed he is a very warm friendly man.
Kindly visited me in Rivelin Valley hospital about 40 years ago, a never forgotten time.
Delighted to hear he is in Portugal with his lovely wife Linda. Are you still in contact DB?

Sadly not...I lost touch with them a long time ago...Lee's older brother was one of my best mates at School...he was living in London but no I have not spoke to any of them for years. I saw Lee at the 2003 FA Cup semi final and we had a good chat but as years have gone by we just lost touch.

When the family moved to Scarborough...it was just before the eldest lad and me were due to go to Secondary School....I used to stay over for a few weekends and go to games even when Colin was manager. The two lads (including Lee)would stay with my family for reciprocal stay overs and we went to at least two games against Reading 1-0 and West Brom 3-1 in the two Bassett promotion seasons.

Goung back to the mid 80s it was always surreal when I was in infant school and Colin used to pick up his kids when I was in the yard going home also. I was lucky enough to play in a half time game at Colin's testimonial also...the only time I have played at Bramall Lane....I can't remember how I played at all!

Really wished we had tried to keep in touch. His wife Linda, also a Geordie, like Colin, was a lovely lady.

It was funny when Lee (and Curtis Woodhouse) signed from Driffield Rangers as kids at United and of course Lee then came through in the late 90s. His career could have been so different if it was not for injury although he probably earned more money in the 7 or 8 years he played than Collin did in 20 odd years of being a pro.

Lee is the manager of a semi pro side in South Carolina which play in the 5th tier of US soccer. He used to coach in the Derby academy.

No the team was Waugh, Heffernan, Bolton, Arnott, Stancliffe, Kenworthy, Morris, West, Edwards, McHale, Atkins sub Philliskirk (for Stancliffe)
That was a classic line up for me as a kid. It would have been Stan, TK and West as three centre halves with Joe and Heffernan as attacking full backs. Then the change to two at the back to bring a striker on.

Thanks DB for some lovely stories.
Fully concur about Linda the antipathy of a PL trophy bride. Will PM you if that's ok

He joined us during the 81-82 season when we smashed div 4 and I think left around 1988 so I think he played as much in div 2 for us as he did in the lower two divisions. I don’t have the stats.

According to Denis Clarebrough's 'Bible' (since updated, though how I'm going to do this season is still a mystery...) Colin's record with the Blades was:

1981-82 (Division Four) P: 23 Gls. 4 (First game for us v. Stockport at home on 9/2/82 - a 4-0 win.)
1982-83 (Division Three) P: 41 Gls. 14 + FA Cup P: 6 Gls. 3 + Milk Cup P: 3 Gls. 2.
1983-84 (Division Three) P: 42 Gls. 20 + FA Cup P: 5 + Milk Cup P: 4.
1984-85: (Division Two) P: 32 Gls. 7 + FA Cup P: 7 Gls. 1 + Milk Cup P: 4 Gls. 2.
1985-86: (Division Two) P: 40 Gls. 10 + FA Cup P: 2 Gls. 2 + Milk Cup P: 4 Gls. 1.
1986-87: (Division Two) P: 34 Gls. 8 + FA Cup P: 2 + Littlewoods Cup P: 3 Gls. 2.
1987-88: (Division Two) P: 23 Gls. 4 + Play Offs P: 1 Gls. 1* + FA Cup P: 1 + Littlewoods Cup P: 2.

He was also one of the players who played in that dreadful play-off second leg against Bristol City that looked genuinely bothered and put everything into it.

* That was Colin's last appearance for us - May 18, 1988. He scored a cracking equaliser in the second-half that night in a 1-1 draw in the relegation play-off semi-final second leg (yes, kids. We had them back then.) Not enough, as we finished third-bottom and were back into Division Three, but recently-installed manager Dave Bassett would put that right.

Strangely, Clarebrough's book (Page 465) doesn't acknowledge this goal. I went to both legs of the Bristol City game and - for all those at Ashton Gate - it was one of 'those' away games! 🤣

Yes...that's fine

I remember we were in a pub on the way to Colchester for the ill fated 5-2 defeat and Colins picture flashed up on Football Focus saying we had signed him. Everyone was well chuffed as he had ripped us apart playing for Blackpool. Shook his hand outside Turf Moor before the Burnley Hull game ,great bloke and a brilliant winger.
