Suspect the first issue was getting rid of his brother as scout as he spent too much time in his shop and only scouted players from Scotland. NC from experience likes to have his buddies around him so probably railed against any proposed changes. Wonder if they asked him if he could play more attractive football also? .

You wonder if Maguire had stayed or Coady joined whether it would have made any difference that season. He made so many bizarre choices that season though you suspect it all would have gone a bit wrong somehow even with that: the Higdon signing, and temporarily handing him the captaincy; the whole Collins situation for the whole season; randomly falling out with Campbell-Ryce; collecting right-backs like Warnock collected strikers. And yet in the midst of that we also had another impressive cup run.

Bit unfair that, he just wanted his pal JB to be at his side and that cost money and most people were really up for this at the time. Everybody likes to have a good wingman, Adkins brought in Sharp. Sooty has Sweep etc.
Sadly blowing your budget on one player, who is in one of the least influential positions on the pitch is a recipe for disaster.

Sadly we'd have been better off signing Sweep, hindsight is a wonderful thing though.

I’m not a great Clough fan, but I think some of the slagging off above is a bit too strong. He took us from the bottom of League 1 and a Weir disaster to 7th and a major Cup semi-final. Next year to the playoffs and another major Cup semi final.

Compared to what came before and after I have some great memories from those 2 years - Forest, Fulham, Charlton, Hull, Southampton, Spurs...

In my 50 years as a Blade FLN (for those who remember) is way down my list of bad times.

Completely agree. Looking back I think there were mistakes made by the club at the time, bad luck and some poor decisions, but i don't think he did a bad job.

He was out of his depth. But in fairness to him, he’d developed kind of an interesting formation for us at the time all preseason that to work required Kevin McDonald playing in a new role, and then after the promising debut of this new system, McDonald was immediately sold. That’s a disaster for an experienced manager, let alone one in his first job. He wasn’t right for that job in the end, but I have some sympathy for him.

Anyone vaguely competent yes. But not anyone. Also, I doubt most would have done that and given us the cup run at the same time.

We finished the season with two full-backs in the middle of defence, having needed central defenders since selling Maguire in the summer. He bought numerous full-backs, left the middle of defence largely untouched, and then had a huge falling out with our only experienced specialist centre-backs (one of whom he’d only just signed). He did an excellent job in that first half season. He did a poor job in his first full season. I also think he’s partially responsible for what followed the season after he left – the unworkable squad size he left us limited our potential to reshape the squad, the Sammon signing he‘d already tied up by his sacking (luckily we were spared the Shaun Barker signing, which would have been another disaster), and the retained list he’d done before his sacking extended McEveley’s time with us.

I disagree there. The club was in the mire. It's not always a simple case of swap one for another and bingo.

It takes a steady hand to turn it around in that situation

On Porktalk, there’s a thread about an “ex-Owl” who’s given up his job as a manager to help his employer out financially. I couldn’t even remember Clough Jnr being there, but he seems quite highly regarded, considering he only played twice for the oinkers. They do seem quite desperate to attach themselves to any passing feel good story.

That fact has been pointed out to the OP, who happens to be Neil, who seems to write most of the articles on Porktalk, but Neil has taken umbrage and said he knows what he’s doing and he’s doing a fizzing good job!

Quite the contrast to his time here, where he did his best to be as reckless and irresponsible with the club's money as possible.

Maybe he actually cares about Burton a bit.
