Clough interview sums up feelings on supporters

He didn't take over from Wilson though did he. But it was fan pressure that also contributed to getting him sacked when we were in the play offs

Wilson had a midfield of Williamson, Doyle, McDonald ,Quinn along with a 30 goal striker and still didn't get us promoted. We are better now than we were for the last few weeks of Wilson's regime

Clough did act re the centre half problem. Trouble is some fans slagged McCarthy off because his distribution was poor and didn't train with us for 3 days a week. Yet he could actually defend at centre half .

You don't like a style of football so you want him sacked. Fine, that is your opinion but with 10 games to go,a change now might not make any difference just like when Morgan took over
We lost our 30 goals a game striker thats why we didnt go up maybe if Wilson would have had the financial support Clough has had who knows?
Pointless to sack him now that would make us more of a laughing stock but replace him with Morgan you must be joking.
But I will be there tomorrow no heckling or booing from me i will just wait for the inevitable.

Clough's recent interview after the Walsall game on Blades player sums up his/the teams feelings towards supporters.

Some of the things he said, whilst looking very despondent:

"...everybody just needs to get behind us, get behind us if they can..."

when asked if the fans support would be key he said:

(shrugs shoulders) "...the fans will support us whatever the best way they think can help get us promotion..."

"we're not going to tell supporters how to support us, or what they do or say, that's up to them."

He looked and sounded pretty detached from fans, and not exactly a rally cry...and why?...probably because he feels like he's had a massive kick in the teeth from fans.

When will fans realize their over reactions and non-support drives a wedge between manager/team and supporters.

They must go out on match day with an "us vs. them" mentality, which is crazy and pretty sad. They must think who the fuck are we playing for.

For me he had he come out with a rallying cry of get behind the team fans would have said... "why the fuck should i do what he says..."

I think the term damned if you do damned if you dont springs to mind

The quotes irrelevant Alien, it's just another excuse to roll out the "our fans are cunts" theme that has pervaded this forum for the last five or six weeks.

To be fair it started as just the home fans but the travelling support has come in for it as well recently.

Let's be honest here... the players have been poor for quite a bit of the season, Cloughie hasn't helped himself with a couple of bizarre decisions, but a chunk of fans this season have been at their most pathetic that I've witnessed for many years.

People cannot wait for a manager to have a bad patch and as soon as Nigel Clough hit one he was on the end of some extremely pathetic and downright stupid accusations to do with tactics etc.
For those who are oblivious to realising that players require confidence, I applaud you in the most sarcastic way possible. Do you think that as soon as players have a bad game they want to be jeered and slated constantly for it? This obviously contributes to thoughts such as "who am I playing for?" or "why should I try for this bunch or miserys?"

These particular sets of fans really need to get there act together. It has already made this club into one of the most depressing and sour bunch in the league which obviously does not play into the team's advantage whatsoever.

Tomorrow lets ALL get behind Nigel and the lads and we will see the difference.

I still can't beleive we sacked Porterfield. Shocking decision.

Yes , lets hope the players get behind us , and give us something to cheer and shout about. It takes two to tango. Them and we will then certainly see the differance.

"us vs. them" mentality
Its never us vs them, we all go down to support them every game, we pay and use our time to watch them. If we were against them then there won't be 18k fans down at the lane every game.
+ Also to add I don't think there is anything wrong if at half /full time they get booed if they played poorly. Its not like they are getting stick all 90 minutes.

When we are in the playoff final winning 3-0 crowd singing, NC and back room staff all happy, on that day we shall all be as one, as it should be no matter what. UTB

I remember Warnock being asked once about the players getting booed of at half time to which he replied I wish I could have booed them as well. Players and management need to look at themselves and ask why they are getting booed and then we might start to get somewhere.

True99 I agree that from the off tomorrow we need to get behind the team. However, far from "people cannot wait for the manager to have a bad patch", this season I'm waiting for him to have a good patch! I've been to pretty much every home game and about half a dozen away games and I haven't seen us put in a decent performance, where we have completely dominated the opposition, all season.

I think Clough should be given until the end of the season, and I truly hope he gets us promoted. However, this season I think he has made far more than a "couple of bizarre decisions", and I am frustrated with his continual refusal to admit there is a problem.

Any how I await your sarcastic clap - think I've had it before, caught it off a lass from Rotherham in 1987!

And here we have a perfect example of why this club will never aspire to winning anything when a section of the fans accept failure so readily and then have the neck to blame others who rightly complain at the serial under achievers this club employ every year or so. The type of people who buy into political correctness gone mad, the types that want infant school sports days banned because nine other infants might get upset when they don't win the egg and spoon race. Ooooo oooo ooo don't boo the players they will get upset and not perform as well as they can, bad enough we have a manager who shits his pants at the thoughts of Fleetwood and Scunthorpe we musn't let they players know they are not performing. Time they all grew some bollocks they are lucky to be at such a big well supported club but if they and the management can't live with the pressure that that brings let em fuck off the sooner the better, they love the plaudits and the support when they do well such as in the cup runs time they manned up. 36 games into the season and they are getting worse week on week yet still the apologists on here say it the fans fault for giving them a bit of stick. The OP and thread is as pathetic as negative Nigel and his team.

Not been on here that long but this is a strong candidate for Worst Post I've Seen So Far.

Can I just say that most Egg-and-Spoon races are 8 lanes, and that they tend to be run by Juniors? Infants are more likely to sit down and start picking daisies - unless, of course, they're fortunate enough to have a coach who's taught them about visualization, focus, and intensity.

You really should get out more if this is the worst you've seen take a look on BM or Jim's Twitter and FB accounts.
Do you really think it is all the fans fault ?

This makes even less sense than the stuff about Egg-and-Spoon races. Don't you mean I should stay in more?

And if you read my posts you'll know my answer to that question.

I too am confident we will get to the playoffs and hopefully NC will see us through it - we all have to hope he earns his corn and does the business.

There does seem to be a rift opening - sad to see, but understandable. Clough is his own worst enemy at times with what he says and how he says it.

He needs a spin doctor !

UTB
Dave Bassett?
He "answered the phone" for Alehouse Michael in 2010 11, perhaps Uncle Nige needs somebody to deliver spin for him.

That is about as sad as it comes.

Ooooo oooooo don't criticize I might get upset and not be able to turn up at the lane and clap every misplaced pass or shot that hits the corner flag and if every fan doesn't clap we won't get promotion boo hoo hoo

As you say you are a relative newcomer, if you had been here longer you would be aware that I (according to some) hold that crown for worst posts ever as well as scaring people with my passport photo.

General rule is its a members opinion and he is entitled to it, you may not agree but it's vallied and should be heard without attracting abuse! Bit like the fans on the players when they play crap ;)

That is the Worst Post I've Seen So Far counts to me as opinion and not abuse. Admittedly this may be a fine line and I'll have to have my lawyer take a look at it, but I offer the context of Egg-and-Spoon races and picking daisies.

I wouldn't agree with that, I think the amount of stick they get creates that "us vs them" mentality, its only natural.

Ha ha, brilliant. Perfect example of some of our best "fans".

The key word in your post is "failure", That's the whole point, we haven't failed! We're in 5th place with 10 games to go and Clough has had us in two cup semi's!!! Quite clearly he hasn't failed, he's achieved a decent amount in his short tenure. Okay, 5th place isn't where we all want to be, Clough included, but its no reason to sack a manager.

And no one is accepting failure, who said anything about that. Surely backing the manager and players when they need it most is the best thing to do. Not sack another manager and be back to square one like we are every season. Its not like we are stranded in mid table, or above the relegation zone and we're asking people to be positive. The playoffs are in our own hands, maybe some good backing might inspire the players a bit, it's not going to hurt is it!!!...

...but no, you crack on with your Clough out campaign. And the repeat it all again with the next manager.

Agree fully with you . However my view its the players who are doing a much better job for a Clough out campaign than the fans are .

I am very pro Clough , and we are 5th with 10 games to go , and this is not failure .

Me personally as a blade - Confident - No . Happy - No

I think we've got right to have a bit of rant it has been the worst season in 35 years.
I've sat through some of the worst performances I've ever seen from a Blades side this season and I'm expecting more of the same today.
The thing that puzzles me is every time we give it a go and apply pressure we have sides in trouble but how many points have we lost through taking our foot of the gas a lot.
All I ask from Clough is to be brave but I don't think it's in him

We did start the season with a target of a top two spot and with only ten games left we are 17pts off 2nd placed Preston and a whopping 28pts off the top Bristol City. We are conceding goals to schoolboy defending almost every game and find ourselves hanging on to a play off spot by our fingernails so considering the size of our budget and squad compared to the rest of the division any normal thinking person could be forgiven for considering this an abject failure not Borbokisfreekick and William Henry Foulkes though it would seem. There is a section of our supporters who prefer to hide their heads in the sand or turn on others blaming them for Clough's and the teams failings. I agree there is no point getting rid of Clough at this stage but whatever happens the board have to seriously consider our options in the summer. Is he the man to take us forward ? I think not, the brand of football is negative and boring just as bad as Blackwells hoof it style if you ask me.

whilst none of us are happy and we have every right to feel let down. nothing has EVER been achieved by getting on the players backs so its pointless. We need to support them in any way we can.we can do it, look at hull game last season. That what we should be doing every week and despite losing that game, we still left that day being proud blades. so dont bother getting on em, get behind em ! UTB

Agree Silent. An intense backing at match time is always a contributor to performance.

But isn't that why places such as this are the ideal place for people to vent their frustrations, anger, "impatience", and dissatisfaction? I'm pretty sure at 15:00 on match day everyone on here, clapper and knocker alike is behind the team.
