On your first point. We dont know what our final offer was, or whether he was our top priority, but yes I'd imagine that we start low and test the water.

Second point, again I'll refer back to my previous posts, the financial value of a player is largely irrelevant so Is comparing the financial worth of two players. One thing I will say though is that pretty much all the players we've signed from Scotland have been a success, perhaps McGinn apart. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they've all been low cost

Others have also mentioned the poor signings we've made, out of 16 signings only a small number haven't worked out or shown potential - Higdon and butler off the top of my head. Most have been modest value or on 'free's. I understand higdon and Wallace were the high value signings of that lot.

None of this takes into account the players preference either.

Don't go all high and mighty Swiss it's not becoming. All this here we go again bollocks. As a current international he is worth more than 80k. You know it and so do I. It's all very good defending the three stooges and their every move but it isn't getting better players into the club is it? Surely that's what the manager wants?

Ha! Sorry it wasn't a dig at you but we've seemingly got an obsession with two things on this forum:
- criticising the transfer policy
- obsession with transfer fees

I've had this discussion several times before. Personally I really couldn't give a shit what we bid for players. However, The club has made an 80k Bid on one player, 1.5m on another. Both bids have been mentioned by senior persons at the club, one on facebook, the other in a less public conversation. Neither are at the club...

I entirely agree that the club needs to get the signings made which the club believes will improve the squad for the right money.

On a personal note. I'd much rather get Brayford instead of some glove wearing gamble...

I can't argue with what you say swiss. However, the whole point of Clough's targets is to get some quality in. Yes, there are bargains out there, but you can't expect Clough to drop on a bargain gem every time he steps into the market.

Somewhere along the line, the board and Clough have to recognise that if we require some "proven" player, (and by that I don't necessarily mean a Scottish player) you have to pay the going rate. For every decent signing, there's probably been 2 more average Joes. Not bad players, just not of the desired quality to get us out of the division. We are ending up with mediocre div 3 players, which equals a mediocre div 3 team reflected by our results and if we are not careful our final league position.

We have a massive squad, brought about by numerous and many Clough signings and yet we can't assemble a promotion winning team

The first and only offer, to my knowledge, was £75k. He wasn't top priority.

I touched briefly on it, but I'd imagine that clough would have first identified the positions and top priorities for those positions

Priorities are probably O'Grady and Brayford, the financial men then given the task of going to get them.

Behind that I'm sure there'll be several back ups and nice to haves, GMS was perhaps one of these... I don't know

All of this will no doubt come within a budget and perhaps with only a few people dealing with transfers, they'll prioritise working to pull off the priorities...

Perhaps the GMS deal wasn't rushed as we were waiting for porter to go out to free up that wage

However, it's all a bit of a gamble in the jan window and we could end up with nothing

So much speculation of what goes on behind closed doors. We only see the Jim Phipps facebook and Twitter comments. Personally id wish he wouldn't detail the clubs business like that, but then again he's doing it for the right reasons

Yes, I also think COG is priority and whilst we all (club, board, fans) want Brayford, it seems a bit unrealistic. Hope I'm wrong.

Another perhaps unrealistic signing would be Doyle. Wouldn't mind us getting him, but feel we just don't have the financial clout to get these type of players through the door

I'd really like Doyle, I think of all the three mentioned in your post above, he's perhaps the most likely to come in this week ( if we're indeed going for him)

Judging by Jims comments about us not believing who we are going to sign I am guess on one of the following....

Sorry mate,i can't agree with this.

What division are we still in from when we started to sign these Scots? Answer is the same one,finishing lower and lower each season.Now i'm not saying they're shit by any stretch of the imagination,but they can't possibly be classed as a success just yet.

What i can't debate with you is that they cost next to nothing,but that's propably a clue as to why we're still in league one more than anything.

Transfer fees are pretty important swiss but then ypu think free transfers cost a lot of money
 
To say they are in some on here opinion just a mediocre 3rd division side they've kick a few multimillion pound butts of late.......

Just sayin like.:)
 
Bidding low to test the water is all very well, but as soon as you do you alert other clubs that you're interested in a player. Bid sensible by all means, but offering chicken feed will both annoy other clubs and probably spark a long, drawn out, bidding war.
