although Clough spent money on brayford, done etc I am sure that he more than covered his transfer expenditure with monies generated from the cup runs. Although we have also allocated a million for the pitch, I am confident that Clough did not overspend, and possibly saved money on that allocated, subsequently leaving Adkins with a decent budget which will not have overextended the princes contribution.
I can also see Adkins as being a similar mentality to Clough in that he wants to find bargains and develop talent as opposed to buy success.
Adkins is the ideal guy to succeed Clough, and indeed Clough was the ideal, guy when he was introduced.

Don't think we will ever know. Bearing in mind how much we were losing a month I don't think he did generate his own budget but I could be wrong. We may have broken even at best but what about wages and all the other things that go into supposed free transfers these days?

I also don't think Adkins would have accepted the job unless there were significant funds available to do what he needs to do.

He was financing his purchases from meat raffle winnings at Queens Road club.

Higdon cost him 6 sausages, 2 rump steaks and half a beef tomato

I think you're doing a disservice to the money men at the club.

Clough would have given his transfer targets to the likes of Phipps et al and it was their job to secure the targets.

You're right about the generation of funds to buy players though.

I think the system is for the manager to present his plans and the costs to the Board say twice a year,. In the summer the Board approve a wage budget for the season and the manager works to that in conjunction with the MD, Brannagan. The manager and his scout identify targets, suggest the maximim terms and ask the MD to negotiate the deal.

Last season Clough went back to the Board in November for a lot more cash which was approved and enabled the signings in January/ February of Brayford, Done , Coutts, Freeman and S.Davies. Phipps communicated that to the fans in late November when fans were getting tetchy about the quality of performances.

Wouldnt surprise me if clough left a huge surplus in his transfer 'warchest' and didnt spend it

his transfer acumen didnt seem to extend much farther than his old players at derby did it ?

I think this is probably the best representation of how things run. You don't just generate transfer money and money in doesn't equal money out. Giving credit to our board you have to say they backed Clough. For a League One club to lash out in excess of 2.5m on a full back and a centre forward is almost unheard of. That's in my opinion is the board putting it's money where it's mouth is.

Hey don't forget Scottish midgets while we are casting aspersions.

Doubt it, it might have covered a bit of the transfer fee's but with players wages as well it will have been way more than what we got in the cups.

Long live the King the King is dead.

Admin can we have a special off topic Clough section like we did with Ched?

the fee's over Cloughs tenure are approx £4m which includes the likes of the tribunal fees for Mcghahay etc. (with Brayford being 2.5m (or as reported "similar to Harry Maguire Fee"), we pulled in the Maguire fee as well as a fee for Butler & Taylor and approx 2m for the cup runs (... meaning that we probably was about 1m in excess that could have either been pumped in to the wages etc. (which is approx 20k a week, or probably about 6 or 7 of our league 1 players)

so it will have covered more than just a "bit of the transfer fees"

Yh, because Clough really developed talent. Now your going to say, he brought in che Adams, yh and then brought on in the 89th minute when he couldn't get a feel for the game and therefore couldn't have an impact, yes he did bring him on twice against Spurs and Swindon where he had an impact but 2 games isn't enough. Next you'll argue he brought Louis reed in the squad, which he did but then took him out when he was just finding his feet. And he sent more youth player away than kept such as Long if he showed some faith to him his career might not have gone in a slope down hill. He also brought in Kieran Wallace, how many times did he give him a shot?

Err Ashton, you don't really get it do you

Do you not think the likes of Murphy, Baxter, Flynn, Howard improved noticeably under Clough, or did you think they looked good under Weir?

Or put another way OP.
How many of his multitude of signings are actually worth more than he paid for them.
Any free transfers now worth more that?

Basham and Adams.

Any others?

Done.. i'm stuck now though

i do rate matty but
£600k wasn't he?

Transfer market website have him valued at £440k.
I don't know if there are any others websites, to give their opinions.
I think he was panic buy and we paid a bit OTT.
