I think we should have signed him when he was out in the cold at Swindon but Charlton did instead.

Or when he was out in the cold at Charlton but Coventry did instead.

Or when we got our game-changing investment and desperately needed a striker but Wolves did instead and we loaned Billy fucking Paynter.

Or when Wolves released him but Bury did instead.

So many opportunities to pick him up for nowt whilst he still had plenty of good years left in him. Now we finally seem to notice his existence he is 31 and will command a fee.

Now, I’d maybe say negotiate up to a ceiling of around £200k. If it’s a no-go, move on.
I trust in Wilder. You and I dont know how much was his offer to Bury and the previous missed chances we had in signing Clarke has no relevance to this argument. Last season we had at least 12 players that were earning at least £5,000 and none at Coventry were earning £5,000 a week according to someone well known at Coventry who told my mate in the executive boxes last April. This suggests that Clough and Adkins thought they signed better players on high wages. It is not easy to buy success

Did we find out the backpage headline of the bury rag the other day??

"Bury's latest attempt to sign new players, showing them the most upmarket area they could live in if they sign"

I have wanted Clarke to come here for a few years, always a handful, always hanging around in dangerous positions, ready to pounce and break on goal, big and strong with pace and guile. If we need a battering ram to come on with 25 minutes to go, to run into defenders when they are tiring, cause problems and be running into the box and power through defenders, like skittles, to head in, Clarkey is probably the best option out there.

Scunthorpe away a few seasons ago, Clarke comes on, they get a corner, he runs in from outside the box and knocks everyone out of the way, heads in with ease. Last year at BDTBL, he was a real handful.

For me Clarke should be a starter. It would seem a waste of money to have a guy who scores 20 goals at this level, only coming off the bench, If we need someone off the bench then Tom Pope would be a cheaper option.

Agreed, not sure how CW wants to set up, but I would start him as well.

Sad news. His dad was a true legend of Trinidadian football. Didn’t know his mum had been ill though. Some sort of problem with her implants? Did it stop her promoting her books?
?????

I'm not even bothered about signing this guy. He's had more clubs than Nick Faldo and is the wrong side of 30.

300k is more than he's worth and we have a goal scorer at the club far better than him. We also have another that is much younger and could well end up being better if given the chance. He's not the sort of striker we need.

I agree that Adams has greater potential. But that's what he is - potential. Clarke over the last few seasons at league one, has averaged 1 in 2 at worst. Who cares how many clubs he's had. That's one of the reasons he won't cost the earth. He's had many clubs because he's moved to Championship clubs and not been good enough. But at League One his record is fantastic and if we went up then we can sign someone better. I just don't get fans problems with Clarke. Neil Shipperley was 31 when we signed him and he'd played for 8 clubs when we signed him and can anyone honestly say we'd have gone up without him?! I don't think so and he offered far better service than the bigger transfers of Akinbiyi and Horsfield. Clarke at £300,000 is a total no brainer! Name me one player of equal goal scoring prowess that is a big guy and with pace that we can afford and I'll gladly say fair play.

I wasn't talking about Adams, more McNulty as I am pretty much resigned to Adams going. I guess you could count both though.

Leon Clarke is a decent League One striker that every now and then has a little scoring run and then goes off the boil. Have you ever asked yourself why players like that move clubs so much? It's because they start well and never sustain it. Look at Jon Stead for another example.

He's fine, I would take him on a free as back up. He's not the right sort of partner for Billy who is our leading front man so I don't see the point. We need a different type of striker. Billy does too many of the same things better than him.

Appearances and goals at this level over the last four years, plus his Championship stint. At 6ft 2" I would say he is a very different striker to any we have, one with height and strong physicality

2012Scunthorpe United (loan) 15 (11)
2013Coventry City (loan) 1 (0)
2013–2014 Coventry City 34 (23)
2014–2015 Wolverhampton Wanderers 29 (3)
2015Wigan Athletic (loan) 10 (1)
2015– Bury 29 (19)

I don't agree that he goes off the boil mate as the stats shown by Grappler. I think in the past I was dubious of his work ethic and his professionalism but listening to David Flitcroft, he says Clarke is a good trainer and has high standards for himself and the team. That interview is on you tube. I like McNulty, but he won't be competing with Clarke, its more likely to be Adams and DCL competing with Clarke. As you say, Adams will probably go and what better player to learn from for DCL at this level than Clarke. Callum Wilson stated when he left Coventry how good an influence Leon Clarke was to his career.

We'll agree to disagree. Those stats show poor stints at Wolves and Wigan based on goals to games. There has to be a reason that no one seems to want to hang onto him for very long.

As for other posters' comments about his attributes, he has a number of things in common with Sharp in terms of style. Granted he's taller. Connor Sammon was tall as well.

It makes me laugh how excited supporters get about players we are linked with. I remember the excitement over Hammond.

He simply won't come to be a sub. It's as simple as that. Nor should he. We need a focal point (not target man - sounds too Hoofy) up front. At the moment we have no-one to do that job except our main goal scorer. He's not great at it and should be free to concentrate on his proper job.

If you offer a club an insulting offer for a player, and the player is aware of it, neither the player or the club will play ball. We've but jack shit to unsettle a player. It's bang out of order and we'd be shouting from the rooftops if it was the other way round.

It's a shit and stupid way to negotiate.

My guess is that having done it with Hussey and it worked, we tried the same with Clarke and it failed. It might be derisory but Bury are supposed to be in financial trouble. If we come back with a decent bid they'll probably sell obviously and no one will care about the original "joke" bid/s.

Apparently Leon Clarke has two years left on his contract. If he is on a high salary, he will want it at least matching if he moves. This would have to be factored in on any valuation of him. If they think it is comical then they should laugh, then either tell us what they want for him or tell us to shove it. We are in the same situation but on the other side of the coin with Che Adams.

What happened to "we won't have another Dann Burne situation, we will quickly move on to target B?"

It's all bollox 3rd tier, cheap squad, cheap owners, can't land Leon feckin Clarke. The biggest emotion we can expect is to the amount we sell our best players for, playing Grimsby and not expecting owt from it, it's all bollox :(:(:(

Sob, sob, sob

2 points;

Firstly, Flitcroft is a complete tool, his comments couldn't have been more disrespectful in respect of Pope.

Secondly, Clarke has had a history of "personal problems" that are still obviously there. Do we need another head the ball after getting shot of José?

I hope CW goes for Pope, will fit the budget and with the right service could do well.

I hope he goes for Bradley Dack but small 3rd tier clubs can't prize their assets from giants like Gillingham

All gone quiet on the centre half front since Burton pinched Kyle ....

Its pretty quit full stop today and Wilder said he was confident/hopeful of two in before Grimsby, so maybe today is the day.

He needs to start keeping the expectation setting sound bites to a minimum. Lots of bullish quotes (what we wanted to hear) early on endeared the fans, if they keep failing to materialise or the timescales keep slipping he'll feel the wrath.

If we don't get 2 worthwhile signings in today I wanna know why he said we would.

Having been fed bullshit by big name nob head managers only to be let down I don't wanna hear it from a no name manager. The only things I'm interested in is results and being given a modicum of entertainment.

Perhaps Flitcroft has a problem with our club. I'm not sure why he has to be so arrogant but he's only embarrassed himself.

Our club is entitled to offer whatever fee they wish and their club is entitled to reject it. He's a grown man and ought to act like one.
