Clarke and Sharp + other bits

Too similar types of players, which got me thinking...

Either we need to play the system we play now (as much as people hate long ball) but we need a pacey striker alongside either Clarke or Sharp (both can't play together in this system imo) but that means one of either being on the bench, i can't see us spending money to have Clarke sit on the bench, and there is no way in hell Sharp will be benched, hes captain after all. So this longball probably won't work with the set of players we have.

The other option could be, 4-3-3? If we have Clarke (as a target man) and Sharp holding the ball up for a pacey striker (even McNulty to a certain extent) with Sharp drifting out wide more it may work out, we'd be light in numbers in Midfield and would more than likely have less of the ball, but if we get Morsy or someone competent like him we should have enough Quality in midfield to make things happen..

Regarding Basham, I know Wilder came in and his first conversation with Basham was about where Basham thought his best position was, and he said Center mid... I just think we need to stick Basham at the back again, even if its just until we get a replacement.

Other things to note from me today, Scougall is still too lightweight and being as small as he is, he won't fit into the style of football we've been playing.

One other observation, Long needs to be given a break, for his own good. We have a very impatient fanbase (expectedly) and it won't do him any favours. He's made a lot of mistakes in the past 2 seasons and the more he makes the worse it will get for him. I would like to see Ramsdale in goal on Tuesday.

Disagree, don't think they are similar at all. One chases everything and comes alive in the box, the other jumps (dare i say it) like Sammon and looks laboured. I think/hope Clarke will come good and forge a good understanding with Sharp, early days and plenty of graft on the training ground is required.

We don't have a very impatient fanbase. Years of failure from top to bottom with the same old mistakes being made tends to erode patience, yet considering the numbers we still get for home games, the atmosphere has rarely been toxic, it's just flat most of the time. We're no more impatient than fans of any other club our size and are far more patient than many.

I'm just repeating myself because every new thread seems to be the same:
Played three, both strikers have scored, both have had clear cut chances, both have had goal disallowed for offside, and both scored around the twenty mark last season in poor sides.

I agree with this. For a new partnership, I think they have looked OK. The type of service they both receive needs to change though.

You re correct, Clarke is a totally different player to Sharp, so far Clarke is looking more like a donkey and would look good on Blackpool Pier. But like you said takes time I'm sure things will get better.

Calvert-Lewin - the only striker with any pace. Probably more suited to a season loan in league two at a club where he will be a regular starter. Doesn't appear ready for us yet.

Clarke - I can see the logic in him. Physical presence but also scores goals.

Sharp - solution one week, problem the next. Can go on great scoring runs and carry the team. But when he's not scoring, what does he contribute? If only he had pace.

McNulty - similar to Sharp though probably on a third as much money.

Done - scorer of scruffy goals. But will he ever get a chance to show what he can do as centre forward? If he's primarily to be used as a left winger we may as well try to offload.

Overall for the high tempo play Wilder wants I think we are miles off with our options. How many of them create a threat when they are not scoring, or worry the opposition?

At this level I'd rather take this approach - unless you're big, then be quick and be able to dribble. Preferably you are both.

Perhaps Deane and Agana with Joseph and Francis blinded me a little.

Looking at the players we have been linked with, I'd rather have Clarke plus Akinde (6'2", strong, quick, dribbler, scores goals), Bogle (6'2", strong, dribbler, scores goals), Lavery (quick, dribbler, scores goals) and Calvert-Lewin on loan than what we currently have.

I personally feel that goalscoring prowess aside, our current strikers don't bring enough attributes to the table in terms of their allround game.

Anyone share the same concerns?

I understand what you mean, but to say "when he's not scoring, what does he contribute?" About someone who scored 21 goals last season baffles me.

This is league one. We can't get a bunch of all rounders easily. Goals are the most important thing in the game. We have a player who regularly sticks the ball in the net. Until he stops doing this, you keep playing him.

It's doubly important because for a few years now we have had little to no contribution from midfield re goals.

It's thinking like "what does he contribute when he doesn't score?" That saw Keith Edwards dropped for Peter Withe. Enough said.

The issue is midfield. We need players to give our forwards the ball. Wingers. Players with an eye for a pass.

Bang on, he has fantastic close control and a footballing brain something many lacked last season, it's a bit hard to comment this early.

He was great for us for ONE season but the verdict completely knocked us over the edge and blew the season apart.

The problem is that Clarke is not a target man. We seem to be getting drawn into the fact that he's a bit taller than the others so therefore is the classic target man when he's always been better receiving the ball to feet. Yes, he's OK in the air but he's no Jostein Flo. If, therefore, we are going to play the "long ball" game, we a big, physical, target man as well as a pacy striker to play alongside and pacy midfield players to bomb forward and support them. We simply don't have players to play that style all the time so the we need to make sure that we play to the style for which CW has signed players already.
