Presuming that Porter is on peanuts now and accepts that he's not going to be first choice, this could actually be pretty good. For all his faults he's proven to be a decent foil for a poacher during his time at the Lane and should be able to form a decent partnership with McNulty. I can see Davies being first choice right back unless Clough pulls a Brayford-shaped rabbit out of the hat.

That leaves us with a squad of 19 at the moment with 7 under 18s as back up and 4 who I think are surplus to requirements. We're still looking very light at full back and up front and heavy in central midfield

GK: Howard, Long, (Willis)
DR: Davies
DL: Harris
DC: Butler, Maguire, Collins, Kennedy
MR: Flynn, Campbell-Ryce, (Khan)
ML: Murphy, (Calvert-Lewin)
MC: Doyle, McGinn, Scougall, Basham, Cuvelier, (Dimaio), (Reed), (Whiteman)
ST: Porter, McNulty, Baxter, (Di Girolamo)

Surplus to requirements:
Brandy, Taylor, McFadzean, Ironside

Only three more signings now - Striker, Centre Midfielder, and Right Back. Glad we have kept Davies another back up for Flynn/ Murphy and a good one at that.

Happy with Davies, decent Champioship level player with a good free kick on him,

Porter though..... We better have signed him only as back up to two quality Strikers we have got lined up to bring in from elsewhere, and I dont mean waiting until a quarter of the season has gone by before Ched is available.

Also have to remember the loan market. Agree we need a permanent striker and right back, anything else can be topped up with loans, especially if we can recreate the success of Coady and Brayford.

I think if I was Harry Maguire, this would all convince me to leave. People can talk up the signings all they like, however all I see are mediocre youth blockers.

Just my opinion

Youth blockers? Who's in danger of being blocked?!

Davies and Porter we here last season and they didn't block any youth at all.

Basham for young Connor Dimaio and now got JRC and Davies blocking any progress for Khan. As much as I don't like Doyle, is Basham really an improvement?

We should be there or there abouts for promotion, however we haven't done anything to help guarantee it.

We haven't got any youth Strikers so Porter isn't blocking anybody and Davies is a decent player

We need to sign two quality PROVAN strikers. I don't think we will though, one if we are lucky and then wait for Ched.

That smacks of - I want to have a go at these signings, but if we go up it wont be because of them so I will still be right.

They are not youth blockers - Surely you should know that Clough will play youngsters if he deems them good enough - hence why he takes such a hands on approach to under 21 matches. Seems a pretty cheap pop at the club there if I'm honest.

We'll see how much game time they get next season then I will put so caviar on it. I don't think one signing so far has improved or even put us close to the one who finished last season. Add Porter and Davies to the squad filler list.

Don't get me wrong, I am still optimistic, however I will wait to see what happens with Harry and his replacement first.

Most people seem disappointed we've re-signed last season's leading scorer, who managed to be so despite being out on loan for a bit and mostly coming off the bench, even though he'll only be used as a squad player (much like this season) and is probably earning next to nothing, but are happy we've signed another squad player who is also nothing like good enough to command a first team place, in any of the positions he purportedly plays, in a team looking for promotion.

I've said before, if we could bring Davies on for set pieces, then take him straight off again afterwards he'd be fine, but he isn't quick or skilful enough to be a winger the way we play and he isn't good enough defensively and lacks the stamina to be a full back.

I just think with the squad looking as it does, we need to be signing starters. Squad players are easier to pick up so can wait until we have our first eleven sorted.

Can't believe people are knocking these signings.

Porter, as proved last season is great to come on off the bench for 10-15mins. He's not a first choice striker by anymeans but as a late sub, will win us some points for sure.

Davies - great signing. His versatility and experience is needed for us. I think he played RB, RM, CM, LM last season for us. Again, he's not first choice but Clough is building a squad.

We will be signing starters too. Remember the transfer window isn't actually open yet.

Think that's fair enough pal, but I don't think you can accuse Clough of blocking youth. Of all the regimes we have had in recent years he will do more than any to facilitate their inclusion - if they have the right blend of skills and attitude.

Lets hope we get those two big signings to take this team to the next level as you say. UTB.

Quality strikers are like rocking horse shit and while Porter may not be greeted by the masses as a head turning signing I for one would take him over a disinterested, lazy premiership loanee that has everyone fapping at the announcement but then who's stock plummets quickly.

but as Clough proved last season, hed rather play with no strikers than Chris Porter, surely it says alot about the player if hed rather play an extra midfeilder than him.

Speaking of whom, where is John Cofie these days?

We have signed McNulty, JCR, Butler, Basham, Porter and Davies so far. All considered squad players and would be ok signings individually. We need to improve the starting 11, already made weaker with the loss of Coady, Brayford and possibly Maguire. I don't see anything to fear in our team at present and we need a couple of players who can change a game.

I think that was more to do with the way we set up to play under NC than the personnel. It's a game of opinions though and you just don't happen to share mine.

I must say the signings so far do nothing to inspire any confidence that we will challenge for ta top two spot, certainly as a whole we are not as good as what finished for us last season.

Agreed, although I would argue that the manager sets up the team depending upon the personnel available and due to the personnel he played without any strikers which tells me the strikers were no good. People say he was our top scorer which means jack shit when its what 6 goals. Hes crap, if wed had a striker worthy of a start hed have banged in double what Porter did

Agree that we need a bit more quality. Regarding the newcomers being squad players, Basham is the exception, Clough said he'd be in the first eleven somewhere.

How is Basham considered a squad player?

NC on Basham: "We'll be certainly finding room in our starting 11 for Chris"

What makes you think Butler has been brought in as a squad player?

Hard to see why players brought into different positions will be a youth blocker during a 60 game season.
Playing young player continuously for long periods of time doesn't do them a great deal of good. They need to be introduced and removed when they need a rest. Previously we've not had the depth to do so, and they've played too long and their form has dipped.
