Blades hold O'Grady talks

Sheffield United have held discussions with Barnsley about Chris O’Grady’s future at Oakwell, The Star understands.

Although their South Yorkshire rivals issued a statement last month insisting Nigel Clough’s side would find it “impossible” to sign the former Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday centre-forward, exploratory talks are believed to have taken place after Danny Wilson’s side were relegated from the Championship 10 weeks ago.

Clough, the United manager, has included O’Grady on a short-list of players capable of filling the vacancy which exists for a proven striker within Bramall Lane’s first team squad. However, the 28-year-old is not the only potential candidate identified by Clough and his scouting department with an number of other targets also being monitored.

Barnsley’s terse response to stories linking O’Grady with a move to United marked, according to some reports, the end of Clough’s interest in a marksman who has scored 21 goals in 59 appearances since leaving Hillsborough.

But sources close to Charlton Athletic, the club O’Grady seemed destined to join following Barnsley’s slide into League One, have told this newspaper they are aware provisional negotiations with United took place soon after the proposed transfer collapsed due to personal terms.

Despite signing Marc McNulty, Jamal Campbell-Ryce and awarding Chris Porter a new contract, Clough has made no attempt to disguise the fact he wants to further increase the attacking options at his disposal after United were installed as the early favourites to win promotion from the third tier next season.

Cardiff City’s John Brayford also remains a person of interest after impressing on loan during the previous campaign but Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Clough’s counterpart in the Welsh capital, insists the full-back will be handed an opportunity having failed to command a regular place in predecessor Malky Mackay’s plans.

Strange article
The headline implies that the talks were recent, whereas the article itself refers to the talks being in the past. Hmmm.
I don't think there's anything new here. To me, it just seems like a rehash of old stories. Thoughts?

I wish there were new rumours we could get excited about.

And the Brayford bit is so well worn, it's wearing a bit thin.

Can we have something new to report, please!?!

It depends. The suggestion in the article is that initial talks commenced despite Barnsley suggesting a transfer was unlikely. We know from the trickle of info coming out on the subject that the remaining transfers we're pursuing are the type that will take time - for all we know (and certainly the article doesn't really confirm this) that main target may be O'Grady. I hope it is.

Radio 5 live said O'grady's a done deal! Expected to be announced either today or early tomorrow..

So looks here we have our 30 goal a season striker at last. Or at least we can hope. I cant see it though, disappointing to say the least..

Thoughts?

I've been pretty sure, for a while now, that COG is the one we wheely want. He'll look great in the new gear.

Got to agree there pinchy, fuck all this he's played for wednesday and he was shit for them malarchy,i know for a fact wendies wanted him to stay, they loved his work ethic and in that alone will fit in with our lot perfectly, not to mention the goals he got in a league higher which in vain tried to help the dingles stay up.

I also think he is holding out for COG because he is the main target and if it were to be between COG and fish lips, please don't be the latter.

I agree. Of all the realistically available targets, COG is comfortably my preferred option. He may not score as many goals himself as other contenders (though 15 in a relegated Championship is not bad) but I think the team will score more with him in it.

Height, a bit of pace, good leader of the line, team player, an admirable work ethic and knocks a few in as well.

Cee Oh Gee, you'll do for me.

Apologies in advance for the Sharp comparison, but I just fail to understand why o'Grady would be a better signing. O'Grady has NEVER been a prolific goalscorer, we need 20+ goals from our main striker next season to get promoted, o'Grady's best EVER season was 15 for Rochdale in league 2, 3 seasons ago. How can any of that make him better than Sharp as a signing? They're the same age, and COG has never spent more than 2 years at a club before moving on, the keenness for his signing is quite bewildering really. Now I'm not arguing here that sharp is the messiah, but the arguments against Sharp seem to apply equally, if not more, for COG. Really wouldn't be best pleased if he was our first pick striker next season, the seemingly unproven McNulty would be a preference than a 28 year old who hasn't ever come close to prolific IMO. I'd keep looking, as has been said, COG would be ideal for porter's current role, so with Porter signing on, I don't see much point.

...seems like 'COG's' touting himself around as much as owt!

The point is that O'Grady is much better than Porter. Porter will not have a starting role next season. The team will score more with O'Grady and that's what matters. We don't actually need 20+ from our main striker to get promotion. There is no such rule, as I'm sure the more statistically-minded of us could demonstrate with ease.

O'Grady would provide more assists than Bladey Billy; he is a much better leader of the line; he is quicker; he is much taller; he works harder. He scored 15 goals for a Championship club last season and won their Player of the Year award. How did BB do?

So 5 Live, a national BBC station that can't look beyond the Premier League, or even Man Utd in truth, has reported a deal between two League One clubs that will happen tomorrow?

I listen to 5 Live too, as I travel around. I missed it, but loads more Blades must have heard it, didn't they? Didn't they...........

COG had 6 assists, 15 goals, 51 key passes and made 817 passes from 40 games. The arguments against any of our players are just daft, COG is way above them all and proven at a higher level, never mind this one......

In such a piss poor team, O'grady actually came off pretty well, stats wise:

COG and Billy plz.

Think we'll see two strikers more often than no next season, and to this end I reckon those two together would be an outstanding partnership at this level.

That said, COG with Baxter playing just in behind would work too.

Well I would be content with billy starting but not over the moon, let me point that out first. However, as a game of opinions, I don't think O'Grady is prolific enough to be our main striker, and I don't think he's a 'smart' enough footballer to play on a Clough team. O'Grady is the sort I could see succeeding in a Wilson, Blackwell, Warnock team, not a Clough side. A classic 'Wednesday-type' player really, big and strong, but technically lacking and not great with his feet. He also isn't quick, I've seen him enough to know that. Only reason I'd like Sharp as is stands as I'm not convinced there's anyone that great available at the moment, but as they're similar ages and Sharp is a better 'footballer' which conforms to our current set up, I would choose him over O'Grady. Suppose the argument is tough currently as we don't know how we will set up. I'd be happy with O'Grady if we go 4-4-2 with a quick guy alongside him, but I suspect that won't be the case.

People get paid to do this? I'm pretty sure I could go find news from 30 days ago, re-word it a little bit, slap it in the sports section. I know they're just doing their jobs but I'd almost prefer the honesty of - 'the club are telling us fuck all so yeah...'

CoG got 15 last season in the division above us for a very shite relegated team. He'll do for me. I remember how good he was at Hillsborough when the tides turn the other year (just before Megson's sacking). He played awesome and ran Maguire and Collins ragged. I've always liked him whenever I've seen Wednesday or Barnsley play.

Billy Sharp would be a great signing too. He's not been "prolific" himself recently. He got 10 in 40 for Forest and 6 in 22 last season for Reading & Doncaster. If he has the right team around him, he will score loads. The last time he got 15 goals was in Southampton's promotion season to the premiership.

From a mate on 'another' site at 13:35

Mate just texted me and said that Radio 5 live have just said that COG is a done deal and will be announced by the Blades this week, anyone else heard that? We might just have our big target man after all.

Would be pleased with this.
Cloughie must see something in him,his work ethic must be good.
IF he signs,is this the `pre season headline signing`?

I think we'll play 4-4-2 quite often next season. Nigel knew he didn't have the players for it last season. If we get COG (and I for one will regard him as a great signing and [at the risk of a different debate] an example of game-changing investment) then I firmly believe we'll be playing 4-4-2 sometime after, say, .......October.

As for COG being quick, I should have added 'for a big fella'. I have heard that from both Pig and Dingle fans, rather than my own perceptions of him, so I shall have to "wait and see" on the velocity issue! Actually, that's not a bad idea for all of us.

If we play 4-4-2 will NC go for two partnerships?

O'grady & ?!?

and

McNulty & ?!?

Warnock did similar with Akinbadbuy, Shipperley, Kabba & Webber

If COGs agent rings Clough to say hes available as hes turned Charlton down, (or vice versa) that constitutes there being discussions now does it.

Non starter for me , was denied before talks with Charlton , charlton not being prepared to pay silly money precludes us looking Id wager

He looks big and stocky on the YouTube vids. Don't know if he's just a bit fat and needs to tone up for England or not?!
Only 5" 10 though according to wiki

Hmmm. I knew I'd seen him somewhere.....
