Chatting to Sunderland fans b4 the match that's what they said. I don't rate ONien and asked why he's in the side and not Mepham and they said neither Ballard or Mepham can bring the ball out.

Mepham is better than Robinson but I would sooner have Holding back or take a chance on a younger, more modern, big centre back.

Also shows the rebuild Sunderland need as their centre backs will get absolutely roasted in the PL
 
I think we'll need to bring in 3 CBs this Summer as I'm positive Anel will be moved on given he's in his final year.

The 'head-it-kick-it' type, next to a ball player has tended to work well at this level.
Souttar and Ahmedhodzic looked great together (both of course, could do a bit of the other too).

I don't know what market we're in, but Jimmy Dunne & Harry Darling are both available on free transfers would be fairly solid additions in terms of adding squad depth.

Dunne can play a couple of positions and Darling would be an upgrade on Robinson (who I am a bit sad to see remaining).
 
As Des Taylor was at Bournemouth when they signed Mepham, I'm not sure why everyone is assuming this link is entirely down to Wilder.

He's 27, 6 foot 4, available on a free and just played 38 times for a team that got promoted from the Championship. Why I'm supposed to be mad about this? Especially as Anel might leave and then we'd have one adult CB in our squad, and it'd be Jack Robinson. As long as the contract isn't daft, Mepham would seem like a sensible signing for most teams at this level.

Anyway, it's Nixon. He had us signing Paul Dummett last year and everybody had a meltdown. "Typical Wilder" etc. Turned out we seemingly weren't interested. Same with Grant Hanley and Ashley Barnes.

That's exactly what you need
O remember listening to some analysis on this and they used Cooper and tanganga as examples

One dominant aerial ball winner as apparently a high percentage of defending at this level is cutting out high balls with a quicker partner to mop up counter attacks and second balls
Think thats what we had with souttar / holding and one other but not with the anel / robbo axis of anxiety
Wilder ( if he stays )need to fix this as his first priority as I put our collapse out of the autos down to this and our play off failure

A strong centre back partnership spreads confidence through the team and gives you something to rely on when you are circling the wagons and holding on to what you've got which in turns builds camaraderie and unity

The rest of the side will take care of itself as seen with Millwall unfortunately for us this was pretty much left to take care of itself as well

Links to Mcburnie were always going to happen given his situation with Las Palmas (same with the Swansea links), plus we had offered him a new contract which he rejected last summer.

Will we actually sign Mcburnie, I doubt it, not unless he actually wants to come back and any sort of deal was heavily weighted in our favour.
 
Only if at a knocked down price. Experienced and consistent yes, but at the latter end of his career as in, hardly going to have any resale value.

I'd love to know your source for this. Firstly, we didn't pay £10m (let alone £11m!!) for Cannon, that's the full-fat all contingencies met total and secondly, Wilder chased Cannon last summer and pushed the signing in January when it became clear that Leicester's financial situation meant that they'd be open to a sale.

Bettis interview.

Personally I will never go after any manager for transfer/contract fees as in this day and age it's very rarely their doing. Even back in 2017 when we signed Donaldson the behind the scenes on deadline day showed it doesn't work like the manager directly decides fees/deals

The board sign off on all budgets...? Of course they aren't going to force a player on any manager completely but it's clear they led paying a fee that so far looks far too much. sure Chris wanted him too but the fee? That's board led. If it was too much they just say no.

That's a ridiculous spin. Wilder wanted him, Wilder pushed for him in the summer and in January when it became clear he'd be available and the board signed it off based on that. They may have approved it but it's about as far from "board led" as you can get.

If Wilder forced the new owners to spend millions on them then fucking hell what does he have on them?! It's not spin. It was them.

I can see how it might look that way if, say, someone was actually desperate for it to look that way. But to the rest of us it doesn’t look so different to the Brewster signing, for instance.

He’s an experienced manager who’s presented a strong case to an inexperienced (in this particular field) board.

It was Wilder. It just wasn’t Wilder’s money.

If the Prince in that case was arm twisted into spending 20 million then that's on him. All deals are signed off by the boards or the people employed to run the clubs and that isn't the manager in this day and age.

If I recall when talking about the data lads on deadline day Bettis also mentioned Cannon was a data influenced signing.

Cannon could have been both data influenced and Wilder's choice.

Data influenced signing could involve quite a few things though, as you'd wonder what data they were analysing.

Chances per 90, goal contributions per season, appearances per season, average match ratings (from official club match reports), average played minutes per 90, etc.
