Aye, be interesting to see how the new policy of cherry-picking from this level actually goes in practice. Will it work in the real world?

A great many of us have been calling for it. But, also, a great many of us (including me) were at one time recommending Adkins be appointed as manager...

A potential banana skin of course is the "size of the club" thing - will these new players be overawed? how will they react to (at times) mass criticism/disapproval? will they adapt their game (&, say, hide from the ball)?

We won't know till they do what they do "in the arena". At this stage we're having to trust CW - a manager who just hasn't operated at this level or at this size of club before.

Regardless, it's fantastic being enthused by what's going on at the club once again. Fingers admittedly crossed but, personally, I'm chuffed to be being carried along on the tide of enthusiasm being created not just by Wilder's appointment, but by his forthright words and his interesting deeds since he's come here. And you just feel that the tide of positivity he's actively creating is going to be a sustainable one.

I’m developing a little, guarded enthusiasm myself although I also had it in summer 2014 and summer 2015. It just goes to show that June is the best time to be a blade….

As for cherry picking. Will we be doing it? I hope so but I’m not entirely sure either of the first 2 signings fits perfectly into that model.

Duffy- technically a championship player released by Birmingham but has done well at this level and recently too. Only concern is his age.

Hussey- From this league but wasn’t on anybody’s list of “best players” from this division like say, Sawyers, Dack, Egan etc. That said, the Bury views sound quite promising.

I’d say I’m cautiously optimistic after the first two signings but not yet hugely excited. I hope we will add some players who are both mobile but also big and strong through the spine of the team (Tafazolli, Nelson, O Toole, Akinde, Egan etc.). Then I would be very impressed.

Yeah, that spine is going to be absolutely key, isn't it?

Very encouraging is having a manager openly admitting the need for centre-halves (at long, long last) and stating, explicitly, that he's actively shopping for them. Let's wait & see, but personally I'm feeling very good about this area.

No talk yet about that vital defensive midfield position? It may not be a defensive midfielder as such if Wilder goes for 4-4-2 and looks to bring in box-to-boxers, of course. But I'm imagining he will want one, given his preference previously for 4-5-1 and with having very attacking fullbacks like Beard and now Hussey. Anyway, we know unequivocally that Hammond's not under consideration and that there will need to be incomings in that position.

Also no talk yet (from the manager, at least) about a new big man up top. Indeed, he's said he's happy with his attacking options. Would be very surprised if he didn't bring in a mobile big man to have as an option though. Must say, of those mentioned, my choice would be Jamie Proctor, out of contract at Bradford and attracting attention after a good spell there.

Interesting weeks ahead...

Maybe the facts of the matter are that the Owner (one of them) has decided a new strategy following one of the most disastrous seasons in my memory as regards potential versus achievement.

The owner has decided that we start again as far as possible from scratch, in fact he is reverting to the strategy he stated when he appointed Weir.

Following that strategy decision he has appointed a seasoned manager at this level, one with all the experience and so much knowledge of this level of football. Weir was a rookie.

The strategic decision is to play as many Academy products as possible to join value signings from lower leagues (young and some older) mixed with one or two key experienced signings from leagues above and loan signings of young players from bigger clubs. That was pretty much the strategy when Weir was appointed, the difference being that the brief then was to cut the wage bill significantly but now the Prince is here we do do not need to do that.

Surely at this stage Wilder is putting his name to some of the recent announcements which have little to do with him. He said he had not followed United that closely this past year and yet the retained list was announced within a couple of days of his appointment. So what? Yes, so what? I agree. I hope Wilder carries forward the current momentum and mood forever more, his interviews have captured the mood of the supporters and re-invigorated us.

The important fact is that Wilder will be judged on the quality of his signings which will determine our success. His core squad retained is good, one or two of his transfer listed players can still be part of our future, but it's the new ones he signs that matter and he has the best part of two thirds of a blank canvas to paint for the remainder of his squad and with a budget like he's never had before. He has the chance of a lifetime. Good luck Chris Wilder, Blade and potential legend:cool:.

Well given that we don’t have one senior centre half on the books I think he has to be in the market for some. I heard he’s said the term “defensive midfielder” annoys him because he thinks midfielders should all be able to tackle, run, harry, press, pass, support the attack etc. Apparently he wants 2 all round centre midfielders (1 left footed, 1 right footed).

He also said he wanted 3 centre halves, another winger and a target man but said he wasn’t interested in Tafazolli.

I like what I’ve heard from him so far. I hope he can put it into practice.

Worth noting he has absolutely no experience of managing in this league. Not that that makes him a bad appointment, but wouldn’t call him experienced “at this level”.

But, he is on an an upward trajectory career wise at present so I hope against hope that he can drag us along with him.

The one issue I have with such a strategy is the one about playing as many academy players as possible. At the moment as good as Whiteman has looked and Reeds past performances it's doubtful whether many are ready for the match day squad let alone the first team (based admittedly on the little Ive seen). It's only sensible if the players can step up and is something of a gamble. If Wilder needs to cover the bases, signing players has to be a better bet at the moment than crossing fingers and hoping for the best.

Absolutely right and Wilder said as much recently. Bench and occasional cameos for the kids and a load of growing up training with the first team and then Whiteman could well emerge around November. Wilder rates Lewin but he could take all season, he's bags of time though. I think Reed is ready now in the right team and the right formation but not 4-4-2 so we'll see. I also realise I am in a minority on Reed.

As ever the demands in a promotion season can affect the situation.

Good to talk about football Sean.

I rate Reed as well. He lost his way a little bit which is not unexpected for a young player after an excellent start and the dressing room/managerial changes/politics can't have helped him. 442 doesn't really suit him sadly. Let's hope he can get there.

Hussey quite clearly wasn't in the celebrations over the weekend. Isn't anywhere to be seen in the U21s / Reserves. Anyone actually know what happened to him? Where is he spending his time!?

According to the excellent "View from the Barber's" thread (before it was removed) he has become something of an academic!

This is quite interesting, looking back.

Yeah, it didn't come off with Hussey (nor with the plans for Brayford, mentioned in the clip). But signs of what was wanting to be achieved - energetic, attacking full-backs; the prime importance of set-pieces. Also, in the cases of both Hussey and of Brayford, just a reminder of Wilder's decisiveness - if it isn't working, then change it...
