Much talk on this thread along the lines of "We couldn't avoid selling Murphy because he wanted to go and at least we've got Adams as a replacement".

What happens if/when Adams decides he wants to go?
By the logic the club uses, we can't possibly avoid selling him, regardless of how much we get offered for him.

The obvious corollary to this is also: what players would see the point in stopping for long at a club that doesn't hang onto its players long enough to build a strong squad?

Dave Bassett didn't do so badly in the transfer market when he signed the likes of Tracey, Kelly, Rees, Gage, Beesley, Barnes, Bradshaw, Wood, Booker, Webster, Gannon, Rogers, Todd, Lake, Bryson, Littlejohn, Agana and Deane.

Two consecutive promotions. FA Cup Semi Finalists. Four years in the top flight and finished 9th after seven straight wins.
Total expenditure on the above = less than £1M?

And how much were they sold for combined? Bassett new how to spot a bargain. Deane and Kelly probably being his best pieces of business but also getting fees for the likes of Agana when his career was on the cusp of decline. I think we got roughly £4-4.5 mil for Those 3 combined.

but a million pound in 1992 was a kings ransom
man utd bought Cantona for that

a million then is like 20 million now
was only 8 quid to watch a game

Spending £1M on one player might have been a "Kings Ransom" but £1M on 18 different players!?
Do you reckon we paid well over the odds when we gave Doncaster £35K for Brian Deane then?

“Took 2 years to get to the level”- I’d say a year or just over is more accurate. We bought him in Jan 13 and in Jan 14 he put in that display at Villa and never really looked back finishing that season on fire. Given that the year saw him play under 4 managers (including the Weir debacle) and he was coming from Scotland, that’s understandable.

“blueprint only norwich got out straight away”- Leicester, Forest, Leeds, Pigs, Charlton, Southampton, Norwich etc (all the biggish clubs) got out considerably quicker t
so he was good after 1 year , who offered 1,5 million for him last year ... no one
again how many of those on your list had their top scorer jailed 3 games before the end of the season

we are still in league because of ched evans sticking his dick in to something he shouldnt have ,,, simples
and dont say the board should have got cover , his team mates were left hollow by the judges decision and stopped playing , trauma its called

all that list of players weve sold before , we had to sell to reduce the wages bill after losing prem status as do most clubs

but dont let reality get in the way

Keep up BTL, myself and other posters are waiting for this list of currently available players you said you could name. First the figure you gave was 300+, then that shrank to 30, so cutting you some slack, list 30 current players who could replace Murphy in the role he played (left winger). Don't hark back 30-40 years, that's not relevant. Just concentrate on who's available now.

no just saying fees were miniscule before the prem really got going
how much did Deane go for just a few years later

wrong section. Chris Hughton had zilch to do with Sheffield United and neither does Murphy. i can't understand this obsession with mercenaries that left to join another army

i meant theres been 300 better players at the lane in my 50 odd years of watching us
stop talking bollocks

they include every single players thats played for us 1962 to 74 and 1988 to 2004 and 2002 to 2007
hes never played above league one till now , so hes done nothing

your claim he was our best player now

back that up you really think hes better than Done or Brayford , I dont
and still think Sharps a much better player for us to have

Ah, you meant......so, what relevance does talking about players over the last 50 years have on today's game???

I can list loads of genuinely superb players who've graced our shirt over the last 50 years but it's not relevant, geddit???

So, get with the program, name those 30 players who are currently available, fall within budget, and can replace Murphy as left winger, that shouldn't be difficult.....should it?

You either want to linger on a time that's passed or you realise why the only thing that matters is to focus on today.

With BTL it's like watching an over protective father who still believes his teenage daughter is as pure as a mountain stream and will not accept anything else, when the reality is she is a dirty little slut who does coke at the weekend gets pissed off her head and jumps into a hotel room with the first two blokes who offer her a threesome.
( this is fictional and any likeness to a real person is entirely coincidental )

.

so talking about a player on Brightons books is relevant because ????????????????????????????????????????????????????

hes no longer a sufc player
hes as relevant to us as Micheal Doyle, who probably in his times had as many a good game
how copme you arent bemoaning his loss

Of course it's relevant if we are talking about replacing said player and what to do with the cash received for him
It's a fecking forum isn't it?

my we are a a bitter little man today
Ive said repeatedly weve made some horrendous faux pas as a club
I just dont see losing Murphy as being a catastophe
Hes as Ive said repeatedly an ok player, but getting 1.5 m for him was way too good to turn down, clubs cleared a million in a short time, which we will spend in January , if some club releases a player we need of course

selling currie horrendous
selling deane ffjortoft horrendous
selling Murphy by comparison , hunmmmm nah
Pleased Brighton had some cash they could blow
hope your daughters clap clears up , purely fictionally of course

Hey BTL i'll make it easy for you, name FIVE players who we could go out and get with the money who would be an good replacement for Murphy. Otherwise you might want to stop digging your hole is looking likely to come out near China

Adams is already on that path, I'll wager.
He's been on England U20 duty and has been exposed to the wallets of the other lads who warm the benches of Premier League U21 games (covers the "we couldn't stand in his way" mantra)
A few more slip-ups this side of Christmas and our annual flirtation with the play offs will no doubt be bearing the traditional fruit and we will more than likely see Che land a lucrative contract to warm the benches at some StockPile FC

Not sure if he will go in the JTW but he'll be deffo off in August next year - especially if he earns that coveted "player of the year" trophy

Who's looking forward to year 6?

I don't know why I'm surprised, but you're seriously comparing Doyle with Murphy?

Doyle never impressed as much as Murphy. Doyle somehow went from turd to anti-hero, but why do you think he's with Portsmouth and Murphy is at the top of the Championship? Surely even you can do those sums? Oh mustn't forget that truly magnificent piece of tomfoolery, according to you Murphy played no more than 2 decent games for the Blades, so I guess if he'd doubled that number of memorable games we could have demanded £3million for Murphy? Is that how it works? You play 2 good games and suddenly you're worth over a million?

Once again, where's that list of current players you said you can name? 'Evade, Evade, Evade' is that some kind of family motto you stand by?

You wrote that Doyle had as many good games as Murphy did, that's called a comparison. It's like saying that the initials of your screen name also stands for bacon, lettuce, tomato, it's true but that's where it ends.

over 5 years doyle had many good games
are you implying Murphy is a God
was absolutely tremendous in every game
he never had a poor game

I'll take that as you're able to make statements but incapable of providing support evidence then.

You asked why you'd made a comparison, I sorted that out for you, so you moved on without acknowledging your mistake.
Class pal, pure class.

My point wasn't the one you chose to misinterpret, but once you chose to follow your own dizzy logic there was no shaking you. Once you were hooked you were like a train destined to crash, the only question left was when you'd crash, and you've done that with a magnificence reserved for a special few.

deadbats anaysis of jamie after 1 year
Jamie Murphy

Murphy was linked with United for sometime before he finally signed from Motherwell for a six figure fee. He was seen as a very good prospect and had been tearing up the SPL and impressed under former Blade Stuart McCall. When he came I was looking forward to seeing him and felt he could give us some pace, trickery and goals. Alas, it never really happened. He scored a few goals (Bournemouth, Bury) and a few assists (Brentford, Shrewsbury) but sadly like the above (Flynn) he looked painfully weak, games passed him by and his touch/control was not the standard I had seen on the videos on YouTube! He was played out wide and whilst many said he would be better up top I am unsure whether he would have been much better as he was not that quick, lacked determination and his shooting was often erratic or weak (many trickled into keeper’s hands or over the bar). He did end with a better game against Yeovil and hopefully with a pre season underneath him he c sadly can make more of an impact. I do feel he has more potential than Flynn as at least has shown on occasions he will attack the defender but he needs to show more physicality and use the ball better when he has it. Another player that sadly confirms how bad the SPL is in comparison to even the lower English leagues. We may be better scouting elsewhere in future as I am sure for the reported fee we could have got a league one player that had more impact.

no one argued with this at all

doesnt that sound like the stick woodford and et all are getting now
what you say is we are left with all the crap
what Im saying is we always start with the crap and improve them
brightons paid for us improving him
