Top marks to the club yet again on the fact it's another signing whose name has avoided being leaked until it was virtually tied up.

I thought he was a fullback when first mentioned.

Chris Basham is a versatile young player who joined Blackpool in the summer of 2011. Chris is full of energy, and can play at right back, centre back and in centre midfield. He made his debut for the Seasiders when he came on as a substitute in the opening game of the 2010-11 season against Wigan and also featured in the line-up for the Carling Cup tie with MK Dons. However, his only other first-team appearance came against Villa in November and shortly afterwards he was sidelined after suffering a broken leg playing in a reserve game. Chris began his career with Bolton Wanderers, but was only on the fringes of the senior team prior to his move to Bloomfield Road.

In his Radio Sheffield interview he makes it clear that centre-midfield is his preferred position, though he is happy to play right back - his main concern is nailing down one position rather than being frequently moved around.

We better put the Maguire fee to good use, so far the signings have been pretty underwhelming in all honesty.

With Coady, Brayford and Maguire all gone we are in serious danger of starting next season with a weaker team than the one that ended the last one

Wind up merchant.
We better concentrate on the cup now our chance of promotion has gone. Eh?

Interesting to see Clough say that "he'll be in our 11". Basham's goal scoring record is poor, and doesn't seem to be the creative type, is he first and foremost competition/replacement for Doyle?

It's an interesting question, given that Wallace on paper would also appear to be a candidate for replacing Doyle if he signs. I suspect that might mean Basham's our man at right back for next season - and that Freeman, whose name has dropped off the radar in all conversations on transfer dealings, won't be joining us.

I am starting to think he will be right back but doesn't want to inform us just yet so we don;t give up on Brayford completely. "he'll be in our 11" is quite random.

Messi, he is not, but what he is, is a player who played just about every game in the league above last season and has more prem apps than the rest of our squad combined, he signed on a free and is in his prime at 25. If you were expecting more then it's nobody's fault but your own if your 'underwhelmed'.

I think Wallace is more Coady than Doyle and has an eye for goal

Just going on what I've read, but that's probably right yes. The suggestion from Brannigan the other day was that we'll be looking to re establish contact re: Coady in the next few weeks, so who knows.

Given most of our promising youngsters seem to be around the middle of midfield, I wonder where this would leave McGinn and Doyle. Would seem odd to keep both if we have more coming into the middle.

I would say the board chucking about phrases such as "game changing investment" and "think more in the lines of Liverpool" built expectation somewhat, so to say it is nobody's fault isn't exactly true. The club has played it's part in raising expectations.

I too am underwhelmed by the signings so far, but I'm going to wait until the season kicks off and the transfer deadline has passed before I decide whether I'm disappointed or not.

Depends what you read into them. From the horses mouth, I can tell you exactly what was meant by the two often quoted phrases;

Game changing: no longer have to sell best players.
Liverpool: gradual and proportional investment based around a solid youth policy.

Regardless of their meaning, the comments were ill-thought out as it is unlikely that when a fan hears phrases like these, they're going to equate them to "we won't sign anybody we've heard of, but we won't have to sell our best players" especially when we had only just sold our only player worth selling at the time.

Fair do's - I Don't disagree with that.

Don't know much about any of our signings thus far so I'm on the fence with them all. Clough's record is seems to be one of building teams that aren't necessarily about any one man but more a sum of parts. Aside from a few youngsters who've gone on to grab headlines, I don't see as he's ever been one for having a changing room full of household names.

As I've said, I won't decide whether I'm disappointed or otherwise until the season has kicked off. I know nothing of any of our signings, other than Campbell-Ryce, so they could be shit, or they could be shit hot. I'll just have to wait and see. And see I shall as I renewed my season ticket today, after nearly forgetting completely.

I had a quick look at three of games he's played in. In the first he played centre half in a 3-5-2 system, the second to the right of a central midfield trio and then at right back in a back four. He's taller than what it says on most websites, probably 6'1 or 6'2. Looks a steady, defensive minded player, a ball winner, fit and hard working. First touch and composure not great and not the player they looked to involve a lot when Blackpool went forward. Do not expect a classy, Premiership player.

I would have liked to see him in a holding midfield role. He could probably do well in terms of breaking up play, but we'd need his distribution to be ok as well and he would need to show that he can play with some authority and presence. We don't have a lot of height or aerial strength but Basham could offer that in a holding, central position, protecting the back four and allowing teammates to go forward more.

He's also played right wing and has obviously been moved around to plug gaps, rather than been allowed to form and define one specific role in a favoured position. Based on what I've seen (not a lot) I wouldn't want him at right back. Attacking and overlapping full backs have been an important thing under Clough and I can't see Basham offer anything like what we've seen from Brayford and Harris. Freeman would be a better option I think.

Hit the nail on the head there Presty. Clough turned it around last year when the team gelled and suddenly a team spirit was created. The first real signs were at the Fulham replay.

My Blackpool mates say pretty much the same thing as has already been mentioned, he always gives 100% (when plenty didn't for them last season) and whilst not the most skillful ball player is the kind every team needs. Looks like a Doyle replacement to me, a typical Clough player and a decent signing for League 1. May not be the marquee type of signing people are looking for but the fact we're attracting decent Championship players says a lot about where we are and what people think we're capable of next season.

I think NC is being very wise with recruitment. I expect 2 'major' signings to be made to compliment the less extravagant signings made so far.

Im being far from negative when saying less than extravagant, perhaps prudent would have been a better word.

Hopefully! I'd like to think this wont be the only centre midfielder we bring in though, would like to see some goals come from the middle of the park next season (like we had with brown). I don't think Doyle or Basham will bring that if they play together, fully agree with the Harris switch though great bit of business......... has Harris extended his deal yet?

I cant see Basham & Doyle playing in the same side ....... Basham is almost certainly a replacement for Doyle as he has the engine and the legs that Doyle no longer has. it will be interesting to see if Doyle moves on, although it's doubtful that another L1 or L2 Club could afford his wages.
UTB & FTP

If we get Wallace in addition, we wil certainly have some options in midfield. Isn't Wallace (at least prior to his injury) a skilful lad who could dictate the play in midfield?

I see every sign, as I hoped, that Doyle is going to be eased out. He was admirable in the latter part of the season but we really can improve on him.

Clough mentioned Doyles age a few times in interviews last season. He was saying things like "Doyle is in his 30's and he was still running up and down the field". Maybe he doesn't think Doyle can play week in week out anymore and that's where Basham comes in. It is strange that Clough seemed so sure he would be in the starting 11 next season though. It's also strange that we look to be signing an apparently similar player in Wallace.
