BEIJING — Two Chinese Super League clubs have been relegated to the second tier amid a match fixing and gambling scandal that has already toppled the head of the country's soccer association.

Guangzhou GPC and Chengdu Blades - a team owned by English side Sheffield United - were removed from the Chinese Super League following an investigation that implicated them in the scandal, state media reported Monday.

Team spokesmen could not immediately be reached for comment Monday, but media reports said the clubs are not expected to appeal.

Two new teams who have yet to be announced and will be introduced to the Super League to keep the total at 16.

Along with match fixing and bribing of referees, abuses allegedly also include players paying for places at the national team's training camp and appearances in international competition.

The relegations were the harshest punishment dealt out to clubs caught up in the sweeping probe that has netted more than a dozen players and officials, including former soccer boss Nan Yong.

What a disgrace - it's a pity they aren't Japanese and they could fall on their swords and we could be done with the whole dodgy lot of them, how much has this shambles cost us?

Great isn't it? Almost amusing given our "fairness in football" stance. I really wish we could flog all this attached dross off and concentrate on our own problems. Another crack in what's left of McCabe's dream.

Although I agree now and we should get rid, the potential was enormous. Had the Blades sustained a premiership place, the association with a Chinese club could have had fantastic PR/revenue generating potential.

It's all gone to sh 1t now so get rid and lose the association.

It'll be interesting to hear what McCabe thinks of this.

If its all correct then they deserve to be kicked out of the league completely not just relegated.

And as Alcoblade said, after our "fairness in football" stance at Sheffield United, McCabe should be as tough with our own as he was with the West Ham saga, I'd hope that we're now looking to sell up and get out of Chinese football.

It'd be interesting to hear what McCabe thinks of a lot of things but that's tricky Trev's job now.
Still, I'm sure the club will keep us fully updated with what's happening at the one overseas club we do actually own.

Isn't there a Chinese World Cup Bid in the offing?

Who's the International Football Chairman now?

I thought Tricky was just the Sheffield United Football Club Chairman, rather than acting for the PLC.

Like you say Lenner's, I'm sure the club will keep us informed... They do such a good job of putting such news about Fradi, Bonza West coast fisherman mate (or whatever they're called) and Chengdu when they win! So its only fair that they put this on the OS

At risk of sounding like Len... It's time for a statement from United.

Either cut our losses and get out, or completely start again with them. One or t'other.

Is Tony Xu still in jail? Not seen any mention of it since the turn of the year.

I don't think it could ever have made any serious money for the club. Chinese fans are only interested in two types of team - teams that are on TV a lot and teams that win most of the time. Even in the PL we would be neither. Plus viewer interest fell dramatically in China after they took PL games off free TV. The NBA is King now.
