I can remember near the end of the game at Wolves,ref blew his whistle 3 players,if I remember rightly Stan,Tracey and Pikey or was it the current manager came running toward us fans to celebrate,that was fine,but the ref had only blown for a free kick,and they had to scarper back on to the pitch and quickly

My dad tells this story, Stan was playing Steve Bull onside and luckily he blasted a shot well over the bar. Dad still reckons Bull did that on purpose.

Totally different situation.

When Ched was in his pomp in 2012 we became virtually a 1 man team, he was truely fantastic for 6 months, better than Coutts has ever been on an individual level.

Now we are a team, where no player is indespensible.

Imo this one man team thing is re-writing history a little. We also had the likes of Williamson scoring 14 from the wing, Quinn running riot, future England defender Maguire, Lowton, McDonald, that were all way above League One standard.

The issue was that we didn't have any other strikers capable of bagging even a few goals (only Cresswell). Even a remotely competent forward would have got us over the line that year. Instead we had the crock Hoskins and the woeful O'Halloran (the pair of which, between them, have scored less than thirty goals since that season...and one of them's been playing in Scotland).

Added to that, the Evans saga overshadowed what a huge blow it was to lose McDonald for the play-off final. He was huge for our creativity and ball retention.

The major failure that season was in not preparing for the eventuality that we'd had looming over us since the beginning of it. Any kind of back up would've had us alright. I don't think Wilder is that short-sighted and he won't be come the JTW.

I thought at the time the only way we can get promoted is to draw 0-0 with Huddersfield in the play-off final and try to win on penalties. McD was a bit like Ozil at Arsenal, brilliant against the weaker teams when we played well but tended to go missing in the big games when he was under pressure. Will still have him in our side though, think Wilder would make him a better player.

That’s the difference with Wilder. He has a mental toughness and gets on with it.

"A bit like" not the best analogy but I get what you mean. Lazy, no heart and a greedy bastard to top it all.

I think McDonald is one of the most talented midfielders we've had in all the time I've been watching. But, he has a questionable attitude and that's why he will never be a Wilder player. He's a great talent though and I really appreciated watching him. But, he's in the past now. I bear the lad no malice but I hope his efforts are overcome by a hard-working United side tomorrow night.

Will the devastating injury to Coutts cause us to fall away just like the Ched conviction did when we were going like a train in the 1st division a few years ago. I hope and pray it doesn't but have a feeling that it could and the similarity to the Evans situation is unreal, two players playing out of their skin and both taken away at the wrong moment. I will get behind Coutts replacement 100% and wish whoever it is all the best in filling the gap left by the maestro.

What an overly negative post. Coutts is a quality player but recently we have had one game without Coutts and one game without Fleck. We still looked quality without Coutts we looked poor without Fleck.

Massive over reaction from some for me, yes it's crap and bad luck but midfield is the one position were we have quality and quality back up as well. Best case someone steps up and we carry on like before, worst case we struggle to January and replace him, can't see us struggling though to be honest, we are a completely different United under Wilder and he seems to thrive under adversity.

How many were bemoaning our injury luck before the Derby, yet we battered em in their own back yard.

We talking Evans now? He has something that nobody else in the team has; ability to strike a ball cleanly, hard and accurately from 25 yards (only Lundstram even trying it), just something else that would give teams to think about. What we've been doing all season is good but it's not the full show. If we had all the injured lads back the biggest problem would be team selection, yes there are better players in this league than we have but I'm not sure if there would be a better team.
