Che Adams £11.2m

There were a few articles on it at the time. This from the Birmingham press:
“Che Adams has been outstanding since he has been here and attracted a lot of interest - and quite rightly so, from some top Premier League clubs,” the Blades boss said.

“He’s come on leaps and bounds and he is a real threat and we had to deal with that. He is one of the top players in this division.”

And our local press:
Wilder, whose side climbed to second in the Championship when they beat Preston North End last weekend, has first hand experience of how these situations can pan-out. United were still a third tier club when he was appointed and, despite acknowledging their squad was in desperate need of an overhaul, had privately expressed a desire to work with Adams until economics intervened. City submitted a bid and United rejected it. But after being informed by Adams' representative that his client was intent on forcing through the move, Wilder begrudgingly relented.

"Che wanted to go and it was okay," Wilder said. "Hats off to him, he made the right decision. It was right at the time because we needed that money to invest in other areas.”

"We needed to strengthen the squad in other departments and had to sacrifice a young player to do that. I think we've got a sell-on with him too, so we're protected with that. He's certainly doing well."

"Che got regular football," Wilder said. "Who knows if he'd have got that here at the time? In any case, we used the money to bring in people we needed like (goalkeeper) Simon Moore and Leon Clarke who went on to do brilliant in his second season after the boys got up."
Ok, but I thought you would see my joke! :)

What financial difficulties are they in? Is it because of Covid? If so, what make us immune? As PL owners go, ours isn’t particularly wealthy.

Partly.

But I think their Chinese owner has wanted out for a while as the club has been haemorrhaging cash (of course this is now amplified by the pandemic).

Apparently this is driving a need for player sales.

Yep. After hearing those quotes from Wilder around the time we played Birmingham I was sure he would make a move for him in the Summer.

I'd take Adams here as a replacement for Robinson.

I'm sure Wilder wouldn't mind having him.

But I don't think it's likely because Wilder seems determined to seriously move us on a level every transfer window, and will probably set sights higher. And it's the obvious position we have to strengthen.

Other than probably signing one or both of the two January loanees and a goalkeeper (be that Henderson on loan again or someone else), I think the activity whenever the window opens is going to be less than we’d have probably been otherwise intending, particularly if it’s a shorter window as seems likely. I can see it being a very cagey window for getting established quality players in, and maybe a window of opportunity to get some of the young talent from leagues below at a cheaper price (like the Ipswich lad). Given the suggestion in January was that we were buying Berge then with some of the next window’s budget, I wouldn’t be surprised if were only make some relatively modest signings.

I could still see us spending big on a forward though.

Hendo, Retsos, a big forward signing and a couple for cover would strike the balance between sensible and ambitious, in a changed transfer window.

Would the big price forward depend on WBA coming up and being able to pay for Robinson?
Also, given the financial problems in the Championship, what price Eze, Ollie Watkins, Benrahma.? If we’re looking for attaching talent why would you pay Che’s PL inflated wages when those three could be picked up, in all likelihood, for much less, when both clubs and players will want the deals to happen if they’re not promoted?
I hope we raid the league below while the market is deflated, fill out the squad from there, ready for our European adventure next year.
In general, the teams in our league aren’t overly inventive in who they go for and they have regularly and consistently snubbed the domestic leagues for abroad. There are going to be some good deals their, maybe converting the loans if the deals make sense, however for us it’s not where the real value is nor where we have the best scouting experience. We could wrap up several top championship players, ready to step up to this league for half what their value was six months ago and on wages in keeping with our wage bill.

Not necessarily with WBA/Robinson but £8m or so would be a big help.

I do expect us to exploit the Championship somewhat. But not special Brentford - they'll still expect £25m for Watkins.

I think we'll go for some under the radar types from that division rather than the 'names'.

You might be right about Adams' wages - if they're anything like 60k p/w as reported last summer then forget it.

Would take Adams back no problem. Always liked him as a player it just hasn’t worked out for him at Soton. Worth adding he also had a slow start for Birmingham. Could see CW and AK getting the best out him

Only way Id take him back is if he was accompanied with a marque Dennis type signing to round off our attack. A Hendo replacement and Retsos permanent deal (and maybe a RWB) are the only other things we have to worry about.

He shows give's loads of effort but just needs a goal I think to give him a confidence boost!

Dennis certainly looks a talent.

Not sure what the clamour is for Retsos, we haven't seen anything from him yet.

Not sure regards Che

I thought he wanted out, which was his decision, but not sure how CW would see that

He hasn't pulled any trees up in the Prem, so not sure CW would see him as a stepping stone to get the club to the next level

From a personal point of view and I'm usually wrong, I don't see CW going for him

Not based on his performances for us. But from what i've seen of him preinjury at leverkusen there is a potential elite level player in that fella and at the very least is a decent addition to the squad to push bash for a place.

I think it's clear we've loaned Retsos fully intending to buy, if everything's as expected with him.

It would make zero sense as a short term loan. If that's what it was about Leverkusen would've sent him somewhere where he'd be straight into the team.

Could be a fantastic signing. He seems almost uniquely suited to RCB in that Basham role.

All depends on the price. No player is worth what they were before the gift from China.

£9m has been mentioned. If we don't spend too much elsewhere I don't see that sort of fee being too much of a problem.

We can't expect to get him on the cheap given what Leverkusen paid (£16m).

I think the Pandemic just crashed transfer fees and wages. Would't be surprised if they released him to free up capital for new recruits.

Given COVID and the perceived change in market values, we may not be happy to buy at the agreed price though. Then it depends on Bayer as to if they're happy to re-negotiate.

For Adams - read Robinson.

Too good for Championship - not good enough for the Premier League? It's what you get with the good Championship players - no one really knows until tried, but most are educated gambles.

As a club we are moving on faster every time a new challenge is asked of it and for me we've moved on from Adams.

Can see West Brom taking Robinson - he seems to fit in how Preston played him and how West Brom played him - coming in off the left - we don't want to play like that.

So where actually does Adams play - is it like our inability to fit Brooks in to how we played - he didn't really fit, but was a perfect fit for B'mouth and how they played.

We need a quality centre forward who plays in a 2 up top - it's how CW/AK want us to play as plan A. I can see them working on different formations in certain circumstances/opposition, but 352 with good quality movement of midfield players still appears to be the main formation.

What's our ONLY issue this season? - lack of goals - that must be solved and for me Adams is nothing more than a gamble.

I've only seen Adams once for Southampton (against us ) and hr looked sharp ,direct aggressive and was unluckyb not to scale re at least one goal

On that performance I'd sign him but I don't know if thats indicative of his overall performance's

As you say he looked "Sharp"😉 and could be his long term replacement, he's been excellent before lockdown but realistically can only expect one more season at this level from him.
