Player Suggestion Charlie Hughes

Sorry but I don't think we should be spending £10m+ on any player in the Championship with the income at this level. I've nothing against Cannon and am sure he's a decent striker but what on earth were we thinking considering if we hadn't gone up under Hecky we'd very likely be in the same situation as Wednesday are in right now? Now apparently we're considering another £10m+ on someone who looks competent but not amazing? I don't want to sign Charlie Hughes when he's going to cost £10m I want to sign Charlie Hughes when he's £3m from Wigan. Surely that's the sustainable model we're looking at or investing in development players to flip for a tidy profit like Ndiaye or Osula. Please please please don't turn us into Wednesday I don't think I could cope with that!
I have high hopes for Cannon, and I know a lot of United fans (myself included) were still hopeful that Brewster would come good it's worth pointing out that Cannon is 3 years younger, and last season scored more league goals than Brewster has managed in his whole career.

I think he's a great asset for us in the long term so £10m is more than reasonable. Although I would agree there were other priorities in January.

£10m for a 21 year old CB with a high ceiling who has already done pretty well at this level (albeit in a poor team) would be decent business as he could easily be worth 3 times that if we got promoted.

have to agree re cannon wilders system didnt suit his game but i think selles set up will i will be dissapointed if he doesnt bag 15-20 goals this season regarding hughes with him having worked with selles at hull he may well influence the deal himself to me he definetly looks a united type of player hope we can get him

Oh I've no doubt Cannon will be an asset in the right system, I'm just uncomfortable with that level of spending in the Championship (Brewster was a Premier League signing and even that left us in a difficult financial situation in the end). I'm sure Hughes is a more than competent CB too, but again, the figures banded about give me Jordan Rhodes vibes. Like I said, I'd much rather invest in a recruitment system that identifies Hughes when he's at Wigan rather than proved himself in the Championship and costs 4x as much.

And this isn't about crying about how much the owners have or not, I just want them to spend the money they have/earn through player sales wisely - if they can afford £10m then ok, but with a lot of these transfers they're affordable if the gamble pays off and the team gets to the Premier League, if not, you've got a Wednesday situation when the owners have put in what they can and can't continue that level of funding

Correct. Player could become unsettled and want a move. Wouldnt blame him, Hull is a dump
He's not going to live in Hull though is he? It's not the 1950s when players went to games on the tram.

He'll probably live somewhere posh like Grimsby and commute in across the bridge every day.

You almost had me and then said Grimsby...if he has any sense he would live in Beverley...but still.

When we get him can we do a tweet with all the claims that they’ll want £20m then £17m, no doubt £15m tomorrow before they come down to good old undisclosed and then have Barry ringing him up to ask when he’s coming and he replies that “I’m already here lad”?

Is it me or are Championship clubs flashing the cash more than usual this summer? Not talking about just the parachute payment teams either--seems that a few outside that group are looking to spend.

I had noticed teams that haven’t done anything in ages spending more than I’d expect, Swansea, Pompey, QPR for example

They definitely are even just in wages nevermind fees feels like a lot of club have decided to push the boat out a bit.

Yep, a lot of the mediocre teams from last season will now take points off us regularly, even more so if we go in weaker, obviously

The following all look considerably stronger to me

Hull
Derby
QPR
Swansea
Stoke
Millwall

Probably others too

Don't think anyone gets 100 points this time

Coventry are reportedly preparing to go back with a larger offer than £7 million. He's already way overpriced at that for me. Walk away.

Hull do have plenty of centre backs so it'd be kamikaze not to sell him all things considered.

Oh, unless their financial problems really are a "misunderstanding" like the owner claims 😄

Looking forward to comparing that list to results at the end of the season. They might have bigger squads than us, I guess?!
