If we go up this season what would you class as a great finish next season and where would you improve the team?
For me I would get in a new goal keeper in to push more, 3/4 defenders. 2/3 midfielders and 3 strikers and get rid of hussey, done, scougall, reed, mcnulty and Clarke
For the finish I would class 17th and above a great season and 12 + overachieving

I think there's an unknown quantity and that's the level of first team investment we can expect to see. Supposedly the bulk of the Prince's money was to come after promotion, though I'm guessing we've spent a fair bit more than was ever planned, and whether or not McCabe opens up his side of the budget, will determine what's a reasonable expectation for us.

The first job of any promoted team is to stay at that level. The second is to stabilise and establish your place in that division. If that means staying up by a point then take it. You'd expect we could still compete with a fair few clubs up there in the transfer window, so we could do well, but there's a lot of big clubs spending big money in the Championship.

Looking ahead is no bad thing - I would be disappointed if CW & AK weren't judging the squad we have now and working out what they would need.

Come the last game of the season, the management team should inform the players he doesn't think he needs as soon as possible to allow them to make decisions on their futures. Surely that's common decency - and Wilder appears to possess that attribute.

For me,the main thing is to create a stable base and go with 3-5-2 formation we have now. Ideally we need some points on the board quickly to settle the fans nerves - you only have to look at how last years three promoted teams have done.

I'd go with 2 or 3 changes from game 1 - with a few others in reserve to push the other starting 8 or 9 from this years squad.

It is going to be a difficult call for CW & AK - too many new faces and a possible change of formation could cause havoc, plus the division is new to them.

CW's old team (Northampton) hit this division running and I believe were 10 (ish) games unbeaten at the start - that has helped them when they hit the wall and struggled for a bit - we could do with something similar.

It certainly won't be easy.

In some respects and as much as it pains me to say it we could do worse than to look at what Wednesday have done. Go up and a season or two's consolidation just securing your place there. Perhaps look to start mixing it in the promotion places in season 3 when you've brought in the players you want and they've established a rapport and team spirit and a knowledge of each others game. It's not beyond the realms of possibility looking to the playoffs again such as Southampton and Norwich have done recently but it depends on what Wilder thinks we can achieve.

Championship is like the premier league in that there are a few really silly spenders.....usually from the premier league parachute payments and the odd daft twat like the tuna man.
However, they can't all go up and in chasing it with money often pay way more than is actually needed. After a season or two of not going up, their owner loses interest and they are screwed.....watch out piggies it's coming as that side you have is nowhere near good enough you deluded tossers.

Then there are the clubs who do it right. Build steady, bring momentum from previous promotions or persisting with managers and have long term plans and realistic goals. They tend to do well without forking out daft sums....Barnsley for instance were looking good til they sold players.
And I see us doing the same. We play good football, we have a style and system that works. It's not percentage football.
Most of those players starting every week will be with us in the first season up I reckon. We will then add 4/5 others in key positions to strengthen and add even more quality to the team.....then the following season do the same again.

Assuming Wilder won't jump ship, and the club stick to their word regards investment on promotion, I think that the season 18/19 will see us in the top 6 and pushing for promotion.

So Hussey, Clarke, Scougall, McNulty, Wilson, Reed, Long....plus a fair few of the first year pros, will go. I don't think we will sign Landell.
Part of our crucial recruitment strategy will revolve around getting certain players a new contract. Coutts the one who springs to mind.
 
Lots of clubs in and around the relegation zone of the Championship at present recently went up from league 1. Bristol C, Wigan, Burton, Wolves and Rotherham even. Also teams like Yeovil and Doncaster came up and went down twice.

But then again there are teams like Brentford and Bournemouth, so being successful can be done.

I confess it is a bit worrying though really, as the Championship might not be the promised land we all hope it will be. But any club managed right and given funds to spend should have a chance of staying up. That's our goal for the first season if we go up.

and Leicester, they weren't in league 1 too long ago
 



It's really difficult to assess because next season the matches will be totally different.

This season we always dominate midfield and have to try and break down packed defenses.
Next season games will be more like the Bolton game.

Teams coming to BL won't be scared and they'll try to win midfield and attack us
So its a totally different set of tactics and in someways it will be easier

I would say our immediate priority is pace.
Either on the wing or up front. Billy and Hanson are quite slow.
Lavery might be key because we'll get plenty of chances to counter attack.

I think Wilder wont make too many signings in the Summer, maybe a striker and defender because he'll stay loyal and want to give his squad a chance to impress BUT as the season progresses he'll know what tactics we need to employ and I've no doubt we'll strengthen well in the JTW.
 
There is another factor to consider ...... and that is Chris Wilders Midas touch.

Decent players come to SU and after a few weeks they start looking like world beaters.
Basham, Coutts and Freeman weren't good enough at league 1 level last season... now they are excellent players
Cov fans said Fleck is decent but overrated and nothing special ha ha.. now he looks a world beater for us.
It's like a miracle. When Duffy first came to us he looked bang average then after a few weeks with Wilder Duffy now looks a creative talent.

It reminds me of Brian Clough.... he also bought decent players that he made into world beaters
Remember this little fat Scottish winger called John Robertson. He was a nobody but when Forest had him he became one of the best wingers in the league..... just shows what a special manager can do.
 
Billy might find it tougher going in the Championship. If we go up I wouldn't expect him to start every game. We may need at least one new striker.

Lets not forget either the game changing money Kevin MCcabe has cleared said that once we get out this league then the prince is throw out the money so hopefully he stick to what he said " But remember when he first came in game changing investment like liverpool lol made him self look a right clown
 
The ideal number of first team additions would probably be 4. Then another couple for the squad who can develop.

Athleticism is a must if we're to continue with the 3-5-2. More wide options are required regardless of formation. We'll also need someone to take the pressure off Sharp up front. Another quality CB would also be ideal.

10th to 16th would be around par. Anything above 10th would be great. Below 16th would be underwhelming but acceptable. Getting relegated simply isn't an option.

I think the clowns were any fans that thought we were going to spend millions on the likes of a Saurez , Lalana and Sturridge quality level players.

It was a figure of speech saying we were going to be more like Liverpool than Man City.
Meaning everything had to have a business case and we wasn't gong to waste money and buy ourselves out of the league.

McCabe also said the investment from the Prince was game changing.
We were and are making losses. This meant we no longer HAD to sell any players just to balance the books like in previous years. It's meant we've been in the top 2 budgets every season whilst in league 1.

Who is Liverpool Lol? He sounds like a real character.
 
1st-2nd = Dreamland / Wilder is actually a God
2nd-6th = Unbelievable Jeff. If we win the playoffs then Chris Wilder can have the keys to the city.
7th-12th = Great first season
13th-16th = Happy with that. Now build.
17th-21st = Disappointing
22nd-24th = Horrendous

Well put. As long as Wilder sticks to his principles and builds the squad and keeps that team spirit, both on and off the pitch, then we will do ok.
One of Clough's biggest errors was saying that he would have a small, tight knit squad, and then he went out and bought players (injured) all over the place and lost the team spirit that he built in his first season.
Still worried that everyone is talking about how much we invest. It is not the size of the investment but how we invest. Wilder is very astute, Wright, Carruthers etc and we have to trust him to build the team
