Apologies if others have said this - I have spent the weekend apologising for saying what others had already said elsewhere. Are we seeing a shift in the way CW and AK approach games. Their first few games apart, we reckon we have known their approach - build a squad with character and ambition, plan transfer targets and do the business early, and go out to play attacking football with a formation that is only changed during a match to throw on more attackers. At 0-0 against Wednesday, against 10 men, that change did not happen. In his interview at Norwich, he talked about protecting the 2-1 lead, and he was not just referring to taking the piss out of Norwich by time-wasting - he was talking about having enough players back to cope with their dangerous players. Is this the tweaking of tactics to accommodate new players with different strengths, and to face up to greater attacking threats at this higher level. I doubt whether they will switch to a 'nervous Nigel' approach, but it suggests that CW and AK are adding extra ways of managing games. Any thoughts?

Horses for courses I think mate.
As someone pointed out previously, as a Blade, he wanted to not lose as much as win against Wednesday.
Norwich can be very dangerous on the break and I'm sure the Fulham experience will have taught him something.
As for the less 'effective teams' we might still see his gung-ho style towards the end of matches.

I strongly doubt CW/AK will be setting up teams 'not to lose, maybe nick a win' like Clough and Blackwell used to.

I cannot offer any observations from yesterday in terms of tactics because I wasn't there. But it is one thing to see out the final 5/10 mins of a game with 'gamesmanship' and it is another thing to start a home game against Shrewsbury with a 4-6-0 formation (Cloughie).

just common sense once you get the squad you want .

I've admired the bravery of our tactics upto now but second half of the season everyone's played us it doesn't do to be predictable. flexible 's the name of the game.

I was going to start a post with the exact same title.

I think pragmatic chris would be more accurate though.

It was obvious teams had found a way to limit our goals at the lane.

It's great that wilder sees exactly what we see but actually knows what to do about it.

Last season we could just outplay our rivals because, in the main, we had better players. No one had a midfield like Coutts/Fleck/Duffy, no one had a goal machine like Sharp or defenders who attacked at will. We were the biggest club in that league and we played like it.
It's not the case anymore so at times we have to be a bit smarter and a bit less predictable. What I noticed about yesterday's stats is that we created more chances than Norwich but with less possession than them.

We've kept the best bits from last season, the work rate, team spirit and desire to win but added a bit more intelligence to our play. Whilst we laughed at the pigs and La Liga, there was some truth in it. Any of the top ten sides could compete with the bottom half of the PL clubs, many of the players could play in the PL and many of the managers could manage in the PL. We shouldn't underestimate what we're doing. CW, his staff and his players are doing a fantastic job and are still learning and improving.

Especially at home we don`t want the opposition to score the first goal. If that happens we get Norwich/Bolton tactics. However I think CW/AK have sought to address that issue with the recent signings.

I was impressed the way the whole team dropped back and defended. Think we learnt a lot from that Fulham game..

No CW & AK are doing the exact right thing.

We kept going gung ho against Bristol and Preston and it cost us. We have learnt.
Agree regards the Bristol City game being gung ho but not the Preston one, I just thought we were shite in the Preston game and didn’t attack no where near enough.

I agree that we’ve learnt a lot though and will continue to do so, it’s CWAKs’ first pop at this level so it will obviously be a steep learning curve. I fancy us strongly to get in the top two with these in charge and the group of players we have at this truly great club.

I see us reverting to 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 formation more often now. More of a counter attacking style. The personnel we've brought in means we can play two of Brooks, Duffy, Holmes and even Wilson or Don behind the central striker (Clarke, Sharp, or Don). This formation would give the two supporting the striker a lot of license to just cause carnage and not worry too much about the high pressing and other defensive responsibilities. The central midfielders we have signed all seem to be lads who are happier sitting and breaking up play, whilst maintaining a disciplined shape. It would probably be more effective away from home, and against the better sides at the lane.We have the players to play this way now, and good options on the bench.
