Caught out by the long hoof, again

The defence has been brilliant this season but we do seem to get caught out by long punts down the middle. Not just the goals yesterday and against Newcastle, we've escaped with a few others as well. Given how dominant we are in the air and how well they normally play as a unit, I find it really surprising.

Liverpool play this type of game. Caused a couple of problems at the Lane earlier in the season. Need to be wary next week.

We have to win the aerial battles better. Their plan was to play it off Deeney for Sarr or the one that dives and moans to run on to.

Not just punts, Foster who was brilliant all game threw a really intelligent low ball out to Delafaou who if not for some last ditch defending would have been in on goal.

They punted balls up all afternoon, we were only caught by one. Wouldn't say its a weakness.

That kind of game can catch out anyone. We did it ourselves for our goal against Brighton

I watched Watford’s games against Liverpool and Man Utd and they caused both of those teams far more problems than they did us. With the pace and skill they have up front they can be a very dangerous counterattacking team and we more or less nullified that. Without one mistake by Henderson we wouldn’t have given them a sniff.

Not sure it's got much to do with dominance, it's pace. Because we're so dominant at winning goal kicks etc and press on, we often play a reasonably high line but none of the 3 are that quick (he doesn't necessarily look it but Egan's probably fastest).

So it's Vardy, Mane and others with pace who've looked like catching us out but really haven't very often. I'd say it's more a problem at home when we get caught on the break as we're pressing on.

It happens because we play a really entertaining and attacking style of football. We’re bound to get caught out at the back occasionally.

Besides, that goal was as much Henderson’s fault as anyone else’s. Came halfway, bit further, went back, bit further, back again, left a huge gap near post.

It's an increasingly common achilles heel for a lot of teams. Football has become increasingly about passing out from the back; so much so that defences increasingly get caught out by long punts down the middle. Frankly you'd get a bollocking on a Sunday morning for letting goals in from direct punts down the middle of the pitch. I'd add Chelsea's goals to your list as well as the chance for Mane at the Lane from Van Dijk's long punt/pass. I think Mane may have had another opportunity from a similar punt.
