Carruthers. What a wanker he is

Thought he'd be great for us and wondered why CW didn't play him. I was one of his strongest supporters but when I saw him "in action" this season I have to admit CW was right. Either he hasn't made the step up or he never had it in him to do it. Similar comments could be directed at this early stage to Lundstram.
 

I have never been a fan. He seems to have no awareness of being closed down and makes bizarre decisions. To think he started ahead of Duffy at the start of the season.

He's not had much of a chance, but when he has, he hasn't taken it. I thought he looked the only creative player in our team in the first half yesterday. He was behind the few good moves that we made. But, as we've come to expect of him, he's terribly inconsistent and soon faded out of the game before being substituted. It's a shame. The lad has a real talent but it only shows in fits and starts. I think that was possibly his last appearance. If not, he's surely one that we will trade in January? Despite all this though, he doesn't deserve the name-calling on this thread. Neither did Fleck deserve the name calling last week on the other thread. I think it's fine for "supporters" to pass critical comments on the players - but when you get into personal abuse you really need to go and have a word with yourself. That is not being a "supporter" at all - it's the opposite.

Annual scapegoat day seems to come around much quicker at the moment.

He is a 23 year old lad with only a handful of Championship games under his belt and still learning his trade. Let's not make any allowances though and just put the boot in on another young kid.

It's the Blades Way.

scapegoats come about because they aren’t pulling their weight and are seen as weak points in the team
i’m sick of hearing ‘young lad learning his trade’.. after a while i’m starting to think go and learn somewhere else..
in any walk of life you are allowed leeway when you first start but there comes a point that you have to be making some kind of contribution..
brooks is ‘learning his trade’ ( more so than lundstram and carruthers) but he is making contributions and that’s why he doesn’t get pelters
carruthers has played at this level before he isn’t a new pro

He learned his trade at Oxford well enough to be made their captain at 23.

He has had to come in and try to replace our most important player who was absolutely at the top of his game. Yesterday he didn't even have our second best player to help him.

Of course we are all frustrated and I respect your measured reply. I do genuinely think that Lundstram will make it as a decent Championship player. FWIW,I'm not sure I can say the same for Samir though.

sorry i was really on about Samir.. i’ll cut Lundstram some slack for the reasons you mentioned
 
I don't mind players playing poorly, but samir doesn't put any effort in, a few times yesterday bash, stearman, joc and Moore I believe had a go at him for arguing with the ref rather than trying to close down a Preston player

he doesn’t put the effort in.. he’ll never be a blade unless he has a revelation
(looks overweight to me as well )

The context was "either hasn't made the step up or never had it in him to do it". I'm not scapegoating Lundstram for this team's present run. That is down to a lot more than him. However at this early stage of his career with us I do not think Lundstram will cut it in this team playing this style of all action football. Coaches talk about top players being "good decision makers". For all his footballing skill Carruthers doesnt seem to have that and, admittedly on the evidence of very few games so far, neither does Lundstram. But, as someone who gave up on Jamie Murphy I can also be talking out of my arse.

it’s a question of faith .. i have some faith that Lundstram can improve but i don’t think Carruthers can anymore
i’ll be the fiirst to eat humble pie with custard if he does but i’m not getting the desert plates ready yet

Reading this thread I was going to say that at least it meant that Lundstram was being given a break as the weekly scapegoat but it seems I was wrong
 

First of all I have to say that the tittle of this thread is disgraceful. OK its looking like Carruthers may well be out of his depth at this level. Just remember that he is a professional footballer who has feelings. SUFC put him in the team to do a job, if he is not up to that job it's the fault of the club, not the player. My feeling is that Carruthers will make a god L1 player at this stage of his career and needs regular game time to improve. Let's show a bit more respect and cut the derogatory comments towards the player.

Spot on.
He was awful yesterday but at the same time he gets a few minutes here and there with no decent run in the side to get up to speed (very much like what was being asked for Lundstram). He didn’t have the luxury of a Fleck or Coutts behind him but having said all that you would have thought he would have wanted to take his opportunity by the scruff of the neck whereas in the second half (after a so so first) he aimlessly wandered around allowing the likes of Pearson to dominate.
Our midfield today was scary. A better team would have run riot ..... they were that bad. We badly missed Duffy who for me sets the tempo of the game from our point of view.
Sadly the main conclusion is that at present the “back up” players just aren’t good enough.
Over to Wilder and more importantly, the board.

Totally and utterly agree . Same for the lad Brooks too . They can both eff off and learn their trade somewhere else for me .
 
The Duffy role is not Carruthers role for me,he's not a no.10 type...The Fleck role is more his game...he's the type to get the ball off a Coutts or Lundstram and drive forward with the ball,granted he's way short of Fleck when we haven't got the ball.
When he played alongside Fleck at Posh last season when Coutts was out and looked impressive.
I agree what he's showing at the moment is not good enough;but he's hardly played...we're giving Lundstram time,Carruthers should get the same..although needs to bring it in the next couple of games,that is unless he's already blown it.
 
Samir has talent, but he isnt taking his chances when he gets in the team. Maybe explains why he ends up back in L1 after spells in the Championship.

He was playing with Basham and Lundstram in midfield against a team who always make it hard for you at their ground. No he didn't do well but anyone playing that role had their hands full yesterday. That's the first time we've played without both Coutts and Fleck.

But Fleck tackles, and marks, and runs around a lot. All that sort of thing that Carruthers never seems to have learned.

My main issue with Carruthers is that he doesn't put a shift in. He'll get the ball and dally on it, but tracking back, tackling and marking seem pretty alien to him. If he's prepared to give 100% then he deserves a chance. I've seen him put the effort in once, I think, since he signed.
 

I’m not sure that currently we have much choice but to give him more playing time so he still has time to turn it round. It could be that he feels that he has to do worldy stuff to get a place and is forcing stuff when in reality he should be keeping it simple and keeping the ball moving,
He probably only has two more games to make an impact as Duffy and Fleck when available will be back in so that actually may increase the pressure.
JTW big for him too. If we get extra midfield bodies can see him going but if we get frustrated in our bids he may get a reprieve.
Undoubtedly he has talent but a lot to prove.
