One of the biggest problems I think we've had over the last few years is not having a strong captain who has the ability to galvanise the team when things aren't going well on the pitch.

Last season we collapsed frequently with no one trying to rally the troops or steady the ship. This season, it has been fine when we're doing well but when we hit a tough patch there was no leader on the field.

Wilder doesn't seem to like a strong personality on the pitch, possibly as he is a strong personality himself.

It should be our priority to bring one in.

I think there are some players in the squad who are captain material. Arblaster I think has the personality for it. Also he's a homegrown player which helps.
Burrows was captain at Peterborough at a young age, as well. Even Peck (if he stays) I can see as an option for the armband.

I don't think this team lacks potential captains or leaders.

Arblaster was captain before his injury, wasn't he?

To be honest the role of Captain on the pitch is not really a factor. Teams are so sachooled in systems that a captain can't change anything. This is why we now have contrived timeouts so all the players can be told how the coach wants to change things. How many players would have the capacity to make any changes other than a perjhaps giving other players a good bo**ocking. Even them players egos are so so fragile now the victims would probably sulk and be even worse. I can't imagine what the dressing room was like on Saturday.

I see the modern captain role as talking to players on the pitch. Encouraging. Motivating. Telling them what to do if needs be. I'd like us to be a much more vocal team.

Peck is a good example. He can be a bit headless chicken so needs someone with more experience to calm him down and remind him of what he's meant to be doing.

I was about to post similar. Peck is not ready to be captain due to his headless chicken antics. Arblaster is more composed on the pitch and not afraid to yell at players. The last player I saw who played, acted and inspired others like a captain was Gary Speed.

We've had a few managers with big egos and I don't think they like having a captain who might disagree with them!

Personal preference, but I don't want a captain shouting, bawling and launching into unnecessary tackles and battles. I'd prefer calm authority, someone who can galvanize when the pressure's on, keep everyone's focus and stick to a game plan.

Don’t know how you feel about keepers as Captain but that’s Cooper.

Yeah, I'd agree, but not sure about keepers as captain really. I mean in reality, you want a team of 'captains'. Thinking back to Wilder's all conquering team, you could have picked from half a dozen to be captain

By shouting I mean vocal. I don't mean shouting or having a go at other players. You should be able to hear your captain throughout a game. In fairness to someone like Norwood, he was encouraging and clapping players quite a bit. He'd also go and have a chat. It need to be like that. Just need someone who can inspire the others when things aren't going our way.

Oh I know, it wasn't levelled at you, I get what you mean about vocal.

We could do with a manager with those qualities🤔

I always find these interesting debates.

I'm sure we can all point to players we consider great captains in football but I'm not sure it's always as important as some see.

I think it depends on your team/squad. If you've got an abundance of leaders or players with character, I'm not sure the actual skipper is that important.

Alternatively, a good captain can drag a team forward.

As someone who's watched us since 1981, my immediate thought of our better captains include people like Stan, Brian Gayle, Morgs.

Only coincidentally they were centre halves but maybe a player who drives us forward on the pitch might be a change.

Hopefully Oli is that player.

Ferguson and Keane
Mourinho and Terry
I don't think Mourinho ever clashed with Terry, apart from when they both put car keys in a bowl at a bring the wives social.

If Vini is still here I’d make him captain. But happy with anyone if it means the current incumbent isn’t playing.
