Dominant centre back

Looking at the 2 promoted sides their records of how they play is very chalk and cheese, Leeds out scoring everyone and Burnley out defending everyone based on the way they have both set up and played this season you’d expect Burnley to may be do better in the PL shutting up shop as Leeds can’t out score in the PL there are far better teams that do that. I’m not sure how we would do as we are neither a defence tight team or a goal scoring unit unless we spend spend spend.

Whether Wilder offers Robinson a new contract will say a lot about how ruthless he is with his 'mates'. He should never have renewed Norwood, Fleck and Clarke on the terms he did saddling us with players in decline for a number of years on big wages.

Holding is perfectly fine to provide cover and rotation (if that's needed). Would be relatively cheap. But we need 2 new starting centerbacks.

With respect to Holding, who I'm sure is fine, he's not fit.
He's missed so much football over the last 5/6 years, I'd steer well clear.

An incredibly dumb signing.
Not his fault, but Wilder's biggest mistake.

Robinson already has another year on his contract triggered by the appearances he's made this season and based on the terms that he negotiated when Hecky was manager.

I do think it would be unwise of the club to offer him anything beyond that. and if Robinson is unhappy I'd let him have the opportunity to find a better deal elsewhere.

At the start of the season we lacked the resources to build a squad with sufficient depth of quality. We tried to address the issue in January, when your options are limited to rummaging through the damaged goods. Your options are limited, so we ended up with good players with poor injury records, unwanted players who've not played all season because they weren't in the first team squads and the grossly overpriced.

I fail to believe Holding was our only option when we had £10m available.

You'd like to think given a full pre season he wouldn't be unfit. The fact he can do 65/70 mins in chamionship games with the little football he's played and still play well is pretty impressive.

Had he played more games, we might have been able to get him fit sooner, but it hasn't happened.

I hope that 75-80 minutes each against Stoke and then Blackburn, with 8 days between the games, might just be enough to get him fit enough for the playoffs.

He shouldn't cost too much in the summer (not sure if he's got a year left or he's out of contract) so I would deffo look at signing him, hopefully he wants to come here as he was quite upbeat in his interview post Cardiff.

Who knows what he could be like fitness wise after a proper preseason.

Holding, Darling, Dunne and Souttar (I hope we can sign him) as 4 permanent signings in the summer, or 3 out of those 4 at least.

I think Wilder has done an amazing job rebuilding the squad after last season. Quite rightly he talks about the lack of squad he had just 7 days before the season started at a friendly v Hudds T. I went to that game & genuinely thought we’d be mid table at very best.

However - the stubbornness / inability to replace Souttar has been Wilder’s biggest error of judgement in all his time here at SUFC. We all saw last season how Anel & Robbo together did not work. Anel with Souttar was pretty formidable. Anel was playing at a high level and the whole back 5 with confidence.

The crazy thing is nearly every fan was saying this in December when Souttar got injured. A dominant replacement for him should have been No1 priority for Wilder and the new owners should have been told this. Forget spending £10 million on Cannon or even bringing in BBD. Somehow Wilder seems to have convinced himself that Robbo was the solution.

Utter madness & once the dust has settled - if we don’t go up - this will haunt Wilder in regard to why we failed this season & may well cost him his job at the end of it.

As well as being the dominant centre back Souttar was the organiser back there , 14 clean sheets when him & Anel were the partnership vs 6 since his injury says it all .
We’ve pissed money up the wall on a centre forward that doesn’t fit our system that could have secured a quality centre back on a permanent basis .
100% agree. We focus on Souttar's aerial prowess and quality on the ball, but his organisation at the back was arguably more important. Allowed Anel to play without panic (apart from a mad moment against Cov) and he looked every bit the PL quality CB. I think Holding does bring this but perhaps not too the same degree.

I suspect we will sell Anel (and Hamer and Vini) if we can't give them PL football next year. That would mean bringing in two new starting CBs. That is a difficult proposition.

One of the pundits in the Prem said a few years ago that in order to stand a chance of surviving you have to be excellent in at least one area of the game, be that scoring goals or not conceding.

Leeds and Burnley have done each of these respectively. And we have done neither. I fear for us if we go up.

As I've said Over in the rebuild thread, there are very few of the current squad I'd carry over , whoever gets the nod needs to recruit 2 first choice centre halves, I like anel and think his range of passing could well suit him at cdm, baptiste is a unit and will get better with age ,robbo is not someone I'd take to the premier "if" We manage to get through play offs
Even as a back up
