Now that Morgan is out for the rest of the season and possibly may even be done as a player at this level should we be looking further than Monty as our stand-in skipper? Now, I'm a big Monty fan, but I personally believe that defenders, especially central defenders, make better captains, if only because they can see more of the game from the back than a player in the middle can.
If we want a defender instead of Monty then we've got a choice of one, and it's certainly not Nyron Nosworthy, who seems to be the only footballer with a split-personality in as much as he can be excellent and terrible within seconds.
This leaves us with only one player, one who has often led by example, and although only a loan player, seems already ideally suited to take on the albeit temporary responsibility. Step forward Kyle Bartley, who has seemed to be capable of keeping a calm head when all around are losing theirs, and often can be seen either berating or encouraging those around him and organising the defensive line. Perhaps we shouldn't be in a situation whee a loan player looks like the best choice, but at the moment we are, and he seems, at least to me, to be more than capable of doing the job.
If not Bartley, then who? Monty has the passion but not the prescence, whatever your opinion of his playing skills. He's the longest serving player, but that shouldn't be the criteria for a skipper. Creswell is old enough but gets a strop on too often, and who else fits the bill?
Give the armband to Bartley. It might help him to help the others. And God knows, they need it.
