Now that Morgan is out for the rest of the season and possibly may even be done as a player at this level should we be looking further than Monty as our stand-in skipper? Now, I'm a big Monty fan, but I personally believe that defenders, especially central defenders, make better captains, if only because they can see more of the game from the back than a player in the middle can.

If we want a defender instead of Monty then we've got a choice of one, and it's certainly not Nyron Nosworthy, who seems to be the only footballer with a split-personality in as much as he can be excellent and terrible within seconds.

This leaves us with only one player, one who has often led by example, and although only a loan player, seems already ideally suited to take on the albeit temporary responsibility. Step forward Kyle Bartley, who has seemed to be capable of keeping a calm head when all around are losing theirs, and often can be seen either berating or encouraging those around him and organising the defensive line. Perhaps we shouldn't be in a situation whee a loan player looks like the best choice, but at the moment we are, and he seems, at least to me, to be more than capable of doing the job.

If not Bartley, then who? Monty has the passion but not the prescence, whatever your opinion of his playing skills. He's the longest serving player, but that shouldn't be the criteria for a skipper. Creswell is old enough but gets a strop on too often, and who else fits the bill?

Give the armband to Bartley. It might help him to help the others. And God knows, they need it.

Bartley captained Arsenal's reserves team, I'd give it him.

I think we've got one or two more pressing problems than who wears the blessed armband for the rest of the season.

Totally agree lenners.
Time for McCabe and or Birch to come clean and let us know what exactly is happening.
At the moment I think we are looking like relegation fodder.

The situation we are in is awful. Bartley has been the only possitive of note this season. Such a shame we dont actually own him, or any of the squad with ability.

No think about it Mickle relegation 100% nailed on unless McCabe takes some drastic action. No leadership,no money ,no hope, and he's breaking the hearts of all Blades fans. The crowd figure for the Palace game will tell its own story and it's hard to see how continuing down the road we are heading can benefit anyone including McCabe.

A captain should be the first name on the team sheet, and virtually guaranteed a game every week. The only 3 players that fit the bill in that respect are Simonsen, Britton and Bartley.

Pehaps a new leader on the pitch may be some help, albeit in a small way. I am fully aware of the fact that we are in more trouble than can be solved by merely sorting a new captain. I am however prepared to offer a solutuion above and beyond the very vague "we've got problems" and "McCabe needs to tell us what's happening". We are looking like relegation fodder, that's true, but some ideas more substantial than "we need new players" without being specific with regards to where we can get them from and how we can afford them would be good.

Lenners is very keen to point out every shortcoming but also very vague when coming up with specific solutions. Yes, a new captain will not solve everything, but it might help if we had some leadership on the pitch now Morgan is injured and I believe that Bartley may be the one to offer it. General swipes at the lack of leadership from the board haven't got much to do with a discussion of on-the-pitch leadership, have they?

I take your point that a captain should offer leadership on the pitch.
Bartley may fit the bill (who else is there?) but at the moment I have the same feelings as back in the day when Brearley was here.
I hope it doesn't result in the same outcome.
One thing is for sure. We are going backwards at present and what is happening as got to unacceptable to the Board as well as the fans.

You have a point len but it's on matchday that our season develops. We need somebody to kick ass and put a bit a bit of passion and desire back into the team.

Simo was having a right go at the back four several times on Saturday and boy did they look sheepish!

A strong captain is a vital element in any team and we need one right now.

Simo or Bartley for me

Well, I don't think Speed will make a loan player captain, and I don't think he should. There seems to be a received wisdom that it's not the best thing to have a keeper as captain, so I doubt it will be Simonson. I think the position will be that Morgan will remain as 'club captain' - no doubt with lots to say in the dressing room, etc - and Monty will be captain on the field. It's not a great solution, but I can't think of a better one.

That's bollocks Shoreham. Pointing out where the club's got it wrong from ticket prices to relying on loanings provides the specific solutions in itself.
You don't fuck-up in the first place.
I remember it being pointed out in the summer that it was questionable whether there were three worse teams than us.
It was met with chuckles and disbelief.
Not so funny now.
Everything at SUFC starts at the top. Until there's leadership from there, we are going nowhere.
