Can success be achieved without any money at all?

They obviously had money to pay wages and I doubt the competition was paying fortunes out either.

Am I the only one who didn’t find Leicester’s title win a miracle? They spent a lot of money over a number of years and hit form at a time when all the “Big” clubs were in some form of transition. Any other year and they would have finished 6th.

It was obviously a perfect storm to result in Leicester lifting the title but so are all underdog victories. They rode their luck in so many games it was almost unbelievable. Still, any way you spin it they lifted the title of one of the world's best and most competitive divisions with Wes Morgan. Put as much of it down to luck as you want but it's not going to be equalled any time soon.

It’s obviously a great achievement, also I am probably coming more from a place of jealousy with my comments but it grates me when it’s made out they achieved it whilst spending peanuts. They bought there way out of the championship and continued in the premiership.

So you're saying we won't be signing anyone this season? what about Ravel?

And they now have a PL trophy to show for it and there are only 6 other teams which can say that. I don't see what the issue is with spending big money, it worked for them.

Yes I think you're right. But I'd think of it as, "appropriate" amounts of money rather than "big" money. When you're competing in a situation where you've got massive rivals who are throwing around obscene amounts of money, that you cannot possibly compete with, you have to find another way of being successful. This applies to all types of businesses, including football clubs. You can't meet them and beat them with spending power - but that doesn't mean you won't be spending at all - and it doesn't mean that you won't be spending far more than you've ever done before. However, the spending still has to be within your means and if you start going over that then you may jeopardise the very thing that you are trying to protect - the future of the club. The first rule of any business is "survival".

I think that's where Sheff Utd are at currently. We aren't going to be competing for multi-million pound foreign talent like some Prem clubs. We aren't going to be outbidding them. But what we will be doing is spending considerably more than we ever have done before, to bring in a few players of a higher standard than the ones we've got. And then the key will be to get them to integrate and play in this rather unique system that Wilder has got going on down there. That should make us competitive in the Premier league. It probably won't make us top 10, but for now, it will be good enough to ensure we stay at that level and build up our financial reserves, so next summer we can go a little bit further with the signings and ground development etc.

Did you have a bet? 5000/1, maybe just a quid?

This is the ‘moneyball’ question.

Yes you can be successful without spending [a lot of] money, but you have to find players with statistics that other people undervalue - the trick is finding the stat that everyone undervalues before anybody else!

I agree with all of this but now the euphoria of promotion has diminished a bit I have to say that my confidence in our championship style of play translating into success in the prem has reduced. Overlapping central defenders means your best central defender is out of position even if our system provides cover by a midfield player dropping back. Pacy strikers and skilful passes at the higher level of the prem might be more likely to exploit this. I am sure CW/ AK will be thinking of ways to compensate for this. Any how please god let's start signing soon, and whatever happens we'll have a good go, take a massive step forward financially, and will get my enthusiastic support till the last game.

It's a complex challenge with no easy answer, no right or wrong way of doing it.

Benitez just departed Newcastle because they didn't have a strategy or 'project'. The £12m in China could have helped him make his mind up but I think he wanted the opportunity to improve incrementally over a reasonable period, rather than fire-fight all along. I think that's what Wilder wants too and states that he does not wish to risk the future of the club just for a punt at staying up this season. He might even believe too many new high earners will disrupt the dressing room camaraderie. Such as Villa do not risk that effect as they are all on big money anyway.

My desperate hope is that Wilder really does have the budget he is content with and that he succeeds in keeping us up. We are not 'without any money' but probably nowhere near enough.

My biggest fear is that he will not be able to improve us enough in the short and medium term through lack of budget due to the ownership dispute which i.m.o. has to be affecting budget right now. New owners right now would be spending big that's for sure.

The biggest kick in the teeth for Wilder, and therefore us fans, would be the appointment of a new manager when the club changes hands around Dec/January, simply because we are hovering around the relegation area. New owners do that sort of thing, they like to start afresh. New owners will not necessarily understand that it is not such a bad thing for us to get relegated and the main reason was that the future financing and safety of the club was given priority when we were in limbo in High Court and between owners anyway. In effect the critical deadline to build for the coming season is 8th August. We need a quality squad of 23 minimum.

Odds for the coming year are against us staying up and in favour of us having new owners. Will Wilder survive both those happenings ?

Come what may I pray for our man sticking with us for years to come. You can keep your mercenary gobshites in their £5000 suits!

As said above , even if we do a Derby - we cannot get rid of CWAK - some fans and either current or new idiot owners will no doubt have short memories and if we lose say 6 on the bounce will be calling for his head which would be SUFC suicide Imo- who would they prefer , fu##ing Frank La#pard , Tony Pulis , Bruce !!!?!

I just cannot see us doing a Derby, not with CWAK in charge , they have shown over the past 3 years they can adapt and learn quickly to each league and i think they will do this in the prem regardless of how many signings we make, sure some games we may well get a pasting -and this could easily come against anyone in the top league if we are not fully 'on it' and even if we are, the top teams can take apart any of the bottom 14-16 teams

the thing that will be very new to CW , especially with us , is he has never had a really poor run last anymore than a few games and then we steamroll and go on a winning run ! this could 'possibly' continue !!!( personally wouldnt be surprised if it did !) but a bit doubtful and we may go a long time without a win and its how we will react to this

at the end of the day its 11 vs 11 ! and i cant f##king wait for the season to kick off !

Pochetino done OK at Spurs. No buys for 2 years apparently.
OK - So we'll just forget about the approx £200m value of the squad he inherited shall we?

NO - You cannot survive in this league without spending money (or breathing air, just in case some people are in doubt).

No, do you think their ‘incredible academy’ costs them nothing? Or that they don’t have to pay signing on fees for the players they sign out of contract?

Two windows not years

Yes, they signed Moura in the 2018 JTW. And it ignores their previous signings, the players they’ve bought in to build the team in the first place.

They have a low net spend because they sold players for big money and reinvested it, in well scouted players like Eriksen, and on their academy, which has amazing facilities.

They’ve already signed Clarke and it looks like they’re getting Ndombele. So all we can draw from that is if you build a really good team, keep them together by repeatedly giving them improved contracts, you can get away with not signing any players for a year or so.

Good job you’ve had £108m of my money over the years then without me asking for a single penny back.

Could you set up a direct debit?
You want to give more? Or start receiving a refund?

There is research which shows that there is no correlation between how well a football team does and how much it spends on transfers. There is, however, a strong correlation between between wage spending and how well a team does. So, while you might be able to beat the odds for a year or two with a star player or nifty tactical innovation, over the longer run, you have to spend.

I suspect that this correlation breaks down in sports like baseball which have a salary cap. At some point, that would be worth looking into.

Money is king . But some spend kings ransomes and get little or no reward. It is possible to be frugal and successful. It's amazing how Huddersfield one extra season survived on peanuts

Overlapping central defenders means your best central defender is out of position...

Surely our best central defender, Egan, is still there. Don't think there's many premiership strikers who'll be able to get past him. 🙃
