Fair way of thinking about it based on what we know;

- Archer good/great season - chance of United staying up far better. If Villa came calling we may have to sell for double what we bought him for = 18m+ profit (minus wages) plus we bank another years premier league money

Archer poor/average season- United stay up chances = less likely but if we did Villa may think against activating buyback. But we get the Premier league money, have a 1 year more experienced Archer. Downside eats into next years striker budget a bit and we may only have funds for one more average priced striker. This scenario is a normal transfer scenario

Archer good/great season- United relegated. This sucks as we lose him but get our fee more pr less back and overall the deal was a good one after all Archer played well and this was the only way to get him. Next young Star striker off the Premier League conveyerbelt may fancy joining us as we are good for careers.

Archer poor/average season - we get relegated. Everyone will be fine with him leaving and getting our money back. Our young strikers that we own will all be a year more experienced and hopefully 2 of them realise their potential.

Brewster double whammy of injuries + relegation avoided unless it happens in year 2.

New owners may even try to pay our way out of the clauses if he is doing well.

Got a (not ITK) feeling that Will (3 years) Marsh (3years) and Oli (2 years) sign. Jebbo potentially sold if injury clears up by/on deadline day (maybe suitors will be put off by his injury record and therefore even he signs).

At anything over £15m we are massively overpaying again here and carrying a large risk.
If he is a success, what can they then buy him back for, and does it cover the risk we're taking?
That's where this deal should be judged because he's currently a £10-12m player that we're nearly paying double for so if he's a success and keeps us up are we getting £40-50m for him? If he's a success and we go down anyway , do we have to sell a now £25-30m player for £20m or can we keep him?
As always the devil will be in the detail, and we'll never really know it until it's all played out.

But regardless of whether u go down or not, u need to buy a striker now for this season. This deal lets u buy a striker for this season and if u go down it hasn't cost u any money. So u will be relegated with more money in the bank to enable u to buy a striker.

Archer sounds good, made an impression in February & is at least better than what we have, because osula has huge potential but PL is too early for him. this month of premier league despite losing our 1st 2 has given me so much confidence. that there are worse teams in the league & i think we could stay up, because i think weve had harder games in the championship. you look at it Everton & Wolves look terrible, Luton have been written off by everyone. thats 3 right there that we could be better than. Forest dont look sparkling, how do Fulham go with Mitrovic, will Burnley live up to the expectations

A good comparison and facts - thanks Balham Blade, but I would say Brighton and Burnley are throwing a bit of money around and I think they've overpaid to get those deals done early. If we were paying similar levels to Everton and Spurs then I'd think it was at the right price.

Villa just sold Ramsey to Burnley for 14m too. Ramsey has never played one second of PL football. Archer played PL football 3 days ago against Everton. He is also a goal scorer which adds a premium to all players

I think the FFP people will see this as a loophole and I wouldn't be surprised if they changed the rules to prevent clubs from doing this going forward. It is a cracking deal for a newly promoted club and allows the parent club to fudge their FFP numbers. A genuinely win win transfer. So hats off to whoever between Sheffield United and Villa came up with the idea.

I agree they may not like it but I am struggling to see how they can prevent it. Clubs like Man City with partner clubs abroad could buy players from City, loan them to who ever they want and subsequently sell them back to Man City. I can see the multi club model being used in all sorts of ways to get round FFP

The problem is that to get a player that has bagged goals in the PL you are talking very silly transfer fees, at least 40m+ and they will want 100k+ a week. Archer is at about the highest level possible without having proven PL experience. The fee is reasonable, the insurance policy is great to have and his wages won't break the bank, he was on a reported 20k a week at Villa. I mean this with no disrespect to Sheffield United but I am surprised you got him, I expected him to go to a more established PL team e.g. Everton. But maybe they don't have the smart people to be creative with how to construct a deal to suit both parties.

McAtee is a great player, if u could do a similar deal with City for him that would be huge for u guys

McAtee is very talented….a poor man’s Phil Foden….good dribbler with a few tricks.
He wasn’t as effective as our other Man City loanee Doyle….who is more of an all rounder, engine room, always involved player.
Where as McAtee can go missing in games but then from no where comes up with a moment of class.
With McAtee you know you always have a chance.

The best striker I saw at the Lane last season and look forward to seeing how he does in the Prem. He will need service so adding another 1 or 2 creative players will be key.

Was so impressed with Boro that night. Their whole team was on another level above ours…with Akpom and Archer up front looking class.
Boro was one of the best away displays I’ve seen at Bramall Lane during the past few years and that included when we were in the Premier League.

Most of our fans decided there and then….that Boro team wouldn‘t lose another match and would pip us to promotion.
Obviously they couldn’t keep up their superb form.

What if Villa said….no problem….we’ll sell to Burnley then instead.
Thats the problem….when you’re desperate we have to do what works in the short term.
At least there’s little financial risk regards being left with a large debt and having no means to pay it.
