Fair play to him. When he first broke into our team I thought he would struggle to make it - he was so lightweight and seemed to nesh any challenge. He’s certainly much stronger and more aggressive now and a quality performer.
 
Complete Diamond in the Rough. Everton deserve huge credit for seeing this, developing him and persevering. A mate who's an Everton fan once described him (early doors) "not even close to being a Premier league player" and "weak as shit"

Whilst we got peanuts for him at the time, its served a much bigger purpose and helped us on our journey over the last few years.

You'd like to think we'll benefit from add ons if he gets England cap and imagine we pocket 5-10m when he inevitably moves for 50m in the next 12-18 months, if he continues playing and scoring like the present.

Fourth quickest while dragging David Luiz along behind him like a recalcitrant three year old. Some achievement.
 
I'm pleased for DCL, he's starting to look the real deal and if he carries on his form since midway through last season then he could become an England regular.

Those bashing the club are way off the mark though, he was poor in the little time he did play for us, and no one could have predicted he'd become an England player (if he ever does). The deal worked for us at the time and contributed to the best spell in recent times. The deal has only really worked for Everton after 4 years as well let's not forget. Not many clubs can afford to persevere with a striker that isn't scoring, for as long as Everton did. It looks like it may well have paid off for them, but for most Premier League clubs that may well have cost them a Premier League place.

One of those moves that suits every party in the end.

we’d be looking at £90m to cover initial and £115m to cover the whole fee... very much doubt he’d go for those kind of figures, however if he scores 25-30 this season then maybe, everton arent exactly desperate for cash so they may well keep him

I agree with some of that. Yes, he hadn’t done well under Adkins, though that wasn’t a great environment for him to start in. There were, despite those early games, some that predicted that he would go on to better things and who to much mockery predicted that his move to the PL would be a success.

That isn’t to say that the club made a mistake – we needed the money, weren’t necessarily going to play him much that season (though I do think he’d have had opportunities), and weren’t really in a position to turn the deal down.
 
He wasnt ready when he left us and our need was experience back then and he didn't pull up any trees in the first year at Everton
some players do improve and hes on fire just now , will it last, who knows.

I'm sure there were some who had seen enough to suggest he could make it at Premier League level, he had all the physical attributes after all. But can anyone honestly say they thought he'd be an England regular? He might not yet, but the last 9 months or so suggest he could be.

The saddest part of the piece quoted above is where it says '

In 2014 the Blades were stuck in League One and desperate to get out. The club failed to win promotion under managers Nigel Clough and Nigel Adkins before they struck gold with Chris Wilder. Yet all three preferred tried-and-tested players to youngsters.

It was not an environment to experiment with the likes of Calvert-Lewin, according to Sheffield United's former head of academy Nick Cox.

If he could not get in a struggling league 1 club then no way would he have got in the team beyond Christmas 2016!

Of all the players who have made it to the PL from our academy, DCL is the one I feel most pained about. With the paucity & cost of a decent PL striker increasing annually the difference he COULD have made to us is beyond mere financial considerations. Plus he comes across as a decent level headed young man with no rumours of acting like a plonker & letting his success go to his head.

Lets hope we can unearth some more diamonds!

I think had he stayed he would have eventually played. Think back to that season – Wilder had to ditch the initial Sharp-Clarke pairing (Clarke wasn’t quite right till he returned after a longer spell out), Lavery wasn’t fit for most of those initial months (and might not have even been brought in had we opted to keep DCL), McNulty had been loaned out, and so Sharp & Done were the only two fit strikers for a lot of those early months. I think it’s likely DCL would have seen plenty of time in the team that season.

But everything’s turned out well enough for all parties, so it’s by no means a deal I look back on and think too much about what might have been. Keeping him would have meant some other investment in the team wouldn’t have happened, or another player would have had to be sold, so it’s not as though we could have kept him without any negative consequence.
 
theres comparisons with VARDY , he wasnt seen as exceptional and took time to bloom . DCL is 23 now but he had never scored a goal for us in 3 years
and his start this season is a massive leap from his goal ratio up till this season

Appearances and goals have only been a very very steady increase over the past 4 seasons scoring 1, in half a season 4 and 6 in his first 3 seasons at everton and 11 last season
its his 5th season at Everton so we cant argue hed developed enough with us for us to retain him at that time
 
Surely now one of Europe's most interesting talents?
I can imagine most of Europe's top clubs taking a keen interest in him he continues to develop like he does.
Which can only be good for us in the long run.
 
And he went to school with my sons. I always listen out for him, delighted for him and hope he becomes a great player.

I don't think he'd have made it to the level he's at today if he'd stayed with us. Everton have developed him incredibly well and a succession of managers have stuck by him through baron spells of form in the Premier League. He wouldn't have had that kind of exposure here.

As above, this is an instance where the move worked for everyone. DCL seems a top lad, really pleased to see him doing so well. Looks a proper player too. Hopefully he's flogged in the future for big money and we can cash in a little.

We sold Calvert-Lewin to Everton for an initial £1.5m on July 1, 2016. His sale almost certainly gave Wilder the fee and wages budget to sign Clarke (£150k fee + £5k/week) on July 27. At the time, you can understand Wilder preferring the been-there-done-that experienced forward over the raw-but-promising youth.

Not quite right on the timings. He was a deadline day sale, and had featured in preseason to that point. In fact I think he was on the bench a couple of times before being sold.

It does help when he is coached by one of the all time great managers. Ancelotti has taken him to the next level compared to previous managers. E.g record under Silva : Games: 48 , Starts: 27, Sub : 21, Goals: 9, Assists: 2, Minutes per goal: 273.
Under Ancelotti: Games: 22, Starts: 21, Sub: 1, Goals: 12, Assists: 1, Minutes per goal: 139.
