Calvert - Lewin

I suppose that's the thing with academies whether its ours or anybody else's, there aren't too many lads that make it as top professionals playing every week at Premier League or Championship level compared to the amount of money spent on it developing players, many of whom end up in the lower leagues or being that guy in the pub that Wilder was talking about "if I'd have done x, y and z."

We were unfortunate that our best players at the time had come through while we were at our lowest ebb. Harry Maguire was the only one who has gone to the top that we got any sort of game time from.

Every top player in the world was a raw academy kid once.

Calvert Lewin or McB?
Be a tough choice, maybe Dom has that extra pace and causes opponents more problems with the ball on the deck? McB probably more of a target man aerial threat??

out of C-L, Brooks and Ramsdale would be C-L for me every time if we could take just one back!
Sadly though, he’s out of our league now on wages so won’t be back any time soon. I suspect the only one of those three we would have chance getting would be Ramsdale.

Does DCL have pace or is it a myth? his Dad certainly did though

Yep hes the centre forward we dont have...what a shame we didn't have the investment earlier and were forced to sell him for peanuts to fund a promotion push.

Now we are being quoted 25m for an unproven championship centre forward when all along we had in our midst a top premiership forward that we'd developed ourselves.

I never saw the potential that he had. Saw him play a lot for the development squad and academy team (or whatever they were called at the time). Brooks was outstanding - it was obvious he would be a star. C-L was never in that sort of league and when we were offered £1 million I believe it was - then along with many others I was amazed.

Delighted for him, and sad for the Blades but no excuses - somebody at Everton is far better at spotting talent than me!!

We need to be looking down the leagues to try and sign players like Calvert Lewin and Ramsdale like they were signed from us. You're talking 20-30 million to sign a player who might improve the first team. We simply don't have the scouting network to find great bargains from foreign markets. Signing the likes of Lowe, Bogle, Ramsdale, Berge, McBurnie, Burke is great for looking to the future but we need a layer of players coming through the academy and just below that. Players which will take 2-3 years to reach their potential but shouldn't be that expensive.

We do and it looks like the club agrees.

yep, we seem to be finally twigging that in order to succeed we need that 'supply chain'. The problem we have is that we're largely starting from scratch where other clubs already have this in place.

It’s such a lottery with youth players and our reputation as a decent academy will help us to attract decent prospects. There are more decent prospects than there are places in the big academy teams. I think we’ve been quietly recruiting good young players for a couple of seasons, from further afield. We’ve just signed that Coulibaly too, who’s gone out on loan. I could be wrong but I think we’ve got several around the 17-19 age groups that could progress.
Assuming we stay up, I’d like to see us getting Cat 1 standard. It allows us to be proper twats and nick the best players from other smaller academies for very little cost.

The fact we've spent actual money on Coulibaly is very promising. Only 2 and a bit seasons ago we were spending what we paid for him on important signings for our first team.

With RND, Dewhurst and maybe Slater and Hackford we might have a couple of good young academy players in and around the first team in the next two seasons.

Brunt was a massive prospect as a kid too and we seem to be the first academy he’s happy at.

Unproven premier league striker. Think he certainly proved himself at Championship level last season

We have to get Cat 1. It's likely going to get harder to attract youth prospects with Brexit so it's paramount we have one of the better youth systems and training facilities. It also will allow our kids, however shit the fact this is possible is, to play against lower league teams in whatever that cup is called now. A much higher level of competition and development. We simply won't be able to compete in the long term just trying to replace players leaving every summer.

Just goes to show the cost of being in League 1 and of Coutts' injury stopping us being a PL team.

Adams and DCL as forwards would be the mobile type of pairing we'd like and Brooks the type who can do something from nothing. Probably 100m to get that lot back!

I can't help but feel Everton did most of the work on this one. Had we kept hold of him and still made it to the PL, I'm not sure he'd be the same player he is for them.

They deserve a lot of credit for their perseverance and patience.
