I really liked Dom as an academy player because, despite converting from the wings, in no time,he was excellent in his hold up play, pretty quick and good at running the channels - as well as being excellent in the air. You could see the potential that he could develop into a top, traditional style English centre forward. There were/are weaknesses in his game, particularly his movement when playing on the last line of the defence or arriving into the box to get on the end of things. I was gutted when he left to pretty much universal hilarity on here, but I stand by my opinion then. He only really showed his potential in the Grimsby away game at United, when he scored a very accomplished goal. He was MOM for me in the recent Merseyside derby, and some other games this season for Everton (Man City away). Always nice to see a dyed in the wool Blade doing well. And this kid was a childhood kopite.

Edit: I seem too remember Duncan Ferguson and somebody else with United connections were responsible for DCL's move to Everton. The fee was believed to be around 1.75 million, plus add ons. He's already on his third Everton contract so theyobviously think a lot of him.

David Unsworth is the manager/coach at Everton U23. I understand Jamie Hoyland scouts for Everton. I reckon I see him at two thirds of our U23S games.

That's the one - cheers Phil. I think Unsworth was at the academy during the Wilson era, after being assistant manager under Morgan, so he'd have known all about Calvert-Lewin. I remember seeing Ferguson at Shirecliffe watching games.

Plenty thought he’d be loaned out within a year and then sold on the cheap to the Championship. I didn’t, and as time has worn on he’s shown himself to be a durable Premier League player. You seem to be referencing Macheda as though a handful of Premier League starts is somehow comparable to DCL, who has made far more. I don’t. I think he is continuing to make a mockery of those that we’re making Jordan Slew comparisons when he left. They have changed managers several times since he joined as he’s consistently been in their squad. When he leaves Everton it’ll be to another Premier League team, and I look forward to whatever sell-on fee we receive.

I can mention many more that played for seasons in the top flight before dropping to their natural level.

Phil Stamp was a great example.

I tend to agree that he’s not yet looked 100% convincing at Everton’s level and do suspect he’ll end up back in the championship but Everton don’t seem to agree and they’re the ones who put their money where there mouth is.

Other than RND, who I’ve seen for the Welsh youth teams, I’m afraid not. When I saw DCL I thought he had good attributes but looked extremely raw. I wasn’t at the Bury game, and it does seem like a good chunk of those predicting failure for him we’re at that and haven’t been able to move past it.

I reckon all players that can be abbreviated to 3 letters will go on to better things. DCL has, RND might, JOC will, and JEC probably will.

I’ve just checked his stats 71 total appearances and 11 goals.
35 starts and usually subbed off with
36 of his other 71 appearances coming on as sub.

Think Calvert-Lewis is treasured because he has genuine pace, great temperament, he’s English and he’s still young so Everton probably believe he’s worth the investment by giving him game time to develop him.

I'm a big DCL fan. Amongst other things, I saw him score that winner for England in the FIFA U20 World Cup Final in Korea. When he left us, my feelings at the time were - well, what can you do? I felt roughly the same about Aaron Ramsdale. We were stagnating in L1. A Premier League club come calling. They can take a gamble & offer what is peanuts to them, but a tidy sum to us. The player is going - that's how it is.
But what really intrigues me is how clubs judge & spot POTENTIAL. Dom had a few first team games, & was a regular at U23. But, he wasn't rewriting U23 scoring records like Jake Wright & Jordan Hallam. I understand Everton put a lot of effort into scouting youngsters. They bought Dom on his potential, not his record. He looked ordinary for us, he's a regular starter for them, with Premier League goals under his belt. OK, that's with a few more years on the clock. Let's say Everton got it right, who saw what? Fascinates me....

We, Sheffield United, have, throughout our history, had periods where we sign hidden gem players, apparently from nowhere, who go on to be club legends & fan favourites. Spotting the potential in those players is a real skill - magic almost. We've signed some right shit an' all.

I always follow our ex-players and want them to do well, but I've seen a lot of Everton over the last couple of years and I'm still baffled at how he's getting regular games there. I haven't ever seen him affect a game at all and his goal record is very poor for a main striker.

DCL wasn't a young International at that time. That's part of the point I'm making. He played a lot in the same U23 team as Louis Reed. Louis was also an England Youth International.

A lot of players almost inevitably improve when they go to a bigger club because they're surrounded by far better players than they were at the Lane.
