Just what was he told to do by Clough? He didn't close down, he didn't chase down, he didn't have any sort of first touch. He ambled around without any sort of presence on the pitch at all and while I'm all for giving young uns a chance he added absolutely nothing.
But...
I'd love to know his instructions from the management team.

I'm with you on this for today. I hope Clough sees a player in there and is using today as just a chance to give him a feel for the game at this level.
The token half paced running frustrates me the most. It wasn't even closing space it was just nothing.

Reminded me of Adam Burley's first appearance as a sub. Lost.

all three teenagers wernt at the races today but as clough said in his interview they will learn from the experience
clough gambled today playing a weakened team and chesterfield played well with there strongest team available
but still couldnt beat us. Clough sure has got some bottle lets hope the players show as much in the coming matches. We can do it bladesmen!!!!

Let's just hope it isn't any of the above

I agree you can't judge him on one appearence, but surely given an half hour opportunity in the first team you'd at least show some passion, close down defenders and if nothing else make a nuisance of yourself.

I was looking forward to watching him but he showed very little, strolled about at half pace and did nothing constructive on the few occasions he touched the ball. To be fair, he looked a long way off being ready for the first team on that performance, which is disappointing.

I was shocked at his attitude. Half hearted attempts to close people down. Zero effort. Not writing him off of course but that was unacceptable

as i have said in another post you need patience with young players. academy and under 21 football is a far cry from 1st team football the main differences are speed of game and the physical agression ,he has great technical ability which didnt show today, patience please !!!

They've only recently converted him from midfield to striker haven't they ? A big ask for him to lead the line at first team level. However, I'm told he looked good when he came on at Orient.

As Clough says you can only learn by getting some minutes on the pitch.

I think we can only take a view once he's had a pre-season training with the first team.

I agree with all on his performance, it was bizarre, however nobody seems to put this down to nerves. Nobody knows how a player is going to react playingfront of 26k fans for the first time. An old player once told me that Andy Parkinson was by far the best player in training everyday, but not his arse playing infront of a crowd.

It's a very good reason why some players need to see some loan time.

Most of the criticism is aimed at his apparent lack of effort which is probably the most unforgivable shortcoming in any footballer.
seeing as it was his first game in front of 26k fans i think we should cut him some slack personally. ymmv. i remember a certain diego de Girolamo coming on and looking like he'd been in the first team all his life and where did that get him? the younger players don't seem to be able to win either way due to the fans impatience. i think it is ok to slag Doyle et al with 200 odd appearances but come on..

We thought he was coming on to play right wing, to help out Freeman against their left back who was running a mock.

All we did was bang long balls up to him and expect him to compete with Evatt, one of the most aerially dominant centre backs in the league.

I didn't notice a lack of effort, more a lack of service.

The nerves can play a massive part, poor kid just looked a bit lost and dazed by it all - understandable in my book. He'll come good I'm sure, give him time.

Not going to judge him on that yesterday. Just looked like a new kid at work who didn't know what he was supposed to be doing and nobody had the time to show him.

I agree with that, Evatt's about twice his size with the turning circle of an ocean liner. I imagine one of C-L's assets is pace and it's a shame he didn't get a chance to show it.

He did look a bit lost today. Jasper Johns was the name that sprang to mind. But I've no doubt this lad has more going for him given the reports I hear for the academy. Judging him on today would be ridiculous.

It would in any place where sanity reigns. Here in knee-jerk, single-cell, gobshite S2, anything goes...the dafter, the better....

What a pity management didn't 'instruct' him to play well!

Talking Bollocks - it's the Bladesfans' Way.

If we do run into Chezzy again this season I think Matty Done might catch Evatt out on that a few times, especially on a pitch as big as Wembley

There's not much difference in size at all.

Bramall Lane - 112 yards x 72 yards
Wembley - 115 yards x 74 yards

Bramall Lane - 112 yards x 72 yards
Wembley - 115 yards x 74 yards

Bramall Lane 8,064 square metres
Wembley 8,510 square metres

446 extra square metres to defend and attack

That's a big difference actually, 21 metres X 21 metres extra just to give it some meaning

It's actually 446 square yards, not metres ;) and that's only 22.3 square yards (or 20.4 square metres if I've worked it out correctly) per outfield player :p
