Thought he would go on to better things. I know Ross County are too of the championship but from
Reviews and progress thought he would be 1st Division.

If he can’t make it I hold little faith out for the academy now

We will regret this one unless we have a good buy back in place. He’s extremely talented and could’ve been great for us long term. Potential through the roof.

When I saw the thread title I thought he'd moved for a second loan stint. I presume that one of the "other clauses" is a buy back deal but to me this is an odd one given that he was probably the highest rated defender we've brought through since Maguire.

GLTTWL

I can't fathom this.

Another that goes out, gets rave reviews, is young...and we get rid.

Same for Gilmour.

Because as good as they might be they aren't ready to play first team at the Championship in front of the likes of JOC, Egan and Bash. How many loan moves do we have with such players until they might be ready?! Its not ideal on the loan players either to be constantly out on loan for years. I agree letting them go if Wilder deems them not ready. It is frustrating to lose our some of the decent youngsters who have developed for years with us and having not being given a chance at this level, but I'd rather see such players forge their own careers elsewhere than sit in the under 23's or go out on loan several times for long periods but then not get a chance.

Wants to play games, make his way in the game. Had options from a few League one clubs but wanted to play each week.

Should be in the Scottish Premier next season with Ross County.

Certainly seen as a stepping stone to things higher up than L1.

Once SUFC say no thanks then these lads have to make their way in the game, earn a living and enjoy their football.

Surprised he was allowed to leave. YES.

From the club website:

United have allowed defender Callum Semple to join Ross County on a permanent basis.

The 20-year-old, who progressed through United's SteelPhalt Academy at Shirecliffe, joins the Scottish Championship leaders with immediate effect, with United securing a significant sell on and other clauses.

Semple has previously impressed in Scotland's second tier this season, making 27 appearances in all competitions, whilst on-loan at Queen of the South.

The left-sided centre-half is the second development squad player to leave during this window, after Harvey Gilmour completed a permanent switch to Tranmere Rovers.

So what if they’re not ready yet? That’s the whole point of bringing them through and giving them experience.

Callum Semple is a great player and needed a bit more time on loan before we made the decision to let him go.

It's called a path. I don't see how a permie role at Ross County is of benefit to either party. You say he wants to play games, great, but he can do that on loan, it's what all players should want to do, test themselves at higher levels. He's investing in his own future.

For what they cost us, I can't fathom what benefit we get out of this deal.

There is little benefit....

CW doesn’t see him in his plans. That’s it.

Semple goes to a club where he will play games potentially against Rangers and Celtic in front of 50k people next season and then moves on to bigger things.

Or does he go to league 1 and play a handful of games at Accrington Stanley and Donny and then moves to non league !!!

Top top move for the lad.

Left sided too which potentially makes him more valuable. You have to assume CW doesn't rate him highly. It's a shame we couldn't have put him with Donny or another league one side before he went on a permanent

This is what annoys me with Chris. He has a record of bringing in players that aren't good enough for decent money and loans from other clubs that aren't good enough, for decent money when we have players that potentially are just as good and for peanuts.

Appears to have all the attributes that Chris wants in a Centre half, has 6 very successful months north of the border in his only professional games, yet we get rid first sniff of an offer.

I knew I'd get some stick for my post but I see myself as a realist and at the end of the day the percentage of Academy players that make it to our first team is low and it is to most clubs because clubs don't want to develop players in a first team when they're not ready. Most of the players we've sold over the years or released haven't gone onto be top players, such as playing in the Premier League. Kevin Davies is an exception and before someone says Billy, he had two seasons playing League One football banging them in before we brought him back when we were back in the Championship.

We have an academy because for all the players we release and sell on for small fees, we also have the Maguire's Naughton's Brooks etc. We'd all love a team of the Academy lads coming through but you can't have a successful team playing the likes of Evan Horwood, Conor Brown, Chris Robertson, Connor Dimaio and Diego De Girolamo and expect to compete at this level. That's what McCabe wants, but then he's the man pulling the trigger when a Manager fails because they can't get to where he expects us to be in his time frame!

For all the Brooks, Maguires and Jags there's far more players that we release or sell on for small fees that end up playing League One at best and many drift into non league. Why, because they're not good enough most of the time, or they have injuries at crucial times in their development and maybe had Semple not had that long injury he'd have gone out on loan earlier and be further on with his development, who knows.

That’s a cracking post. Spot on.

Semple needs games and to make a life for himself.

This is a great stepping stone to move up again

I see where you're going, however, we don't normally have players go out on loan... for 6 months and acquire rave reviews from the most difficult stakeholders possible...the fans. Sure if he sticks out like a sore thumb for the right reasons at that level, it should be easy to send him out on a loan for the rest of the season further up the ladder.

Are you serious Scooter?! So you don't rate Egan, Norwood Henderson! He's had some amazing buys for next to nothing as we all know too. Wilder's got an 8/10 for me for transfer dealings and for the money he's spent he's done wonders with it. Only Lundstram came for reasonable money and hasn't kicked on, the others that didn't succeed have been sold for a profit this summer or went out on loan.

Holmes, Carruthers, Leonard, Evans, Woodburn, Wilson, Johnson.....

For every decent buy, there's been a poor one too.

In Callum's Tweet (posted above by LoughboroBlade) he mentions the SUFC Physios. My "favourite non-football insight" watching Callum & the Academy over the years was at Bawtry Road. The Youdan Trophy week long tournament for U14/U16 sides was going on all over the place, all the pitches, games kicking off every 20 minutes. In a quiet corner, Callum was working his way back to fitness from his injury. My memory is hazy, but I've got it as a female physio working with him. He was standing on one leg, she was a couple of yards away, throwing it to his other foot, he knocked it back to her, foot can't touch the floor, stay balanced on the single leg, repetition after repetition, switch legs, stay balanced, hour after hour, slowly, slowly building strength. Looked hard work for the pair of them...

We will 100% have a buy back clause. They're all the rage now. I think Wilder even spoke about it.

But the door to the first team is well and truly shut for our young players now. There's no point hoping for any of them to break through, because it's not going to happen. Certainly not when we're in a promotion race, and probably not any other time either.

Whether a buy back clause will do us any good is questionable. If Celtic come in for him and he wants to go there, we'll only get the sell on clause won't we.

It's frustrating that we can't get proper fees for players like this, hence the prominence of the clauses. No fucker in L1 and below or Scottish football after Celtic and Rangers has a penny to spend. All while top flight clubs splash £20m+ on dross.
