There’s two pretty huge stumbling blocks in this deal the prince and his demands, he wants (and we have accepted) a £5m signing on fee.

If the prince sanctions it we could be in business as early as Tuesday.
To be clear, a 5m signing on fee for O'Hare? And we've agreed to pay it?

I don't believe that any of that

Hamandcheese it's not at all unlikely that he's looking for a 5m signing on fee. If he was under contract Coventry wd be looking for a much bigger transfer fee. That's the point of running down your contract.

Not sure I'm keen on the idea of enriching a new signing so substantially so immediately, and if United agreed to such a thing, it would be entirely due to the new owners

Not how it works. A signing on fee is spread over the duration of the contract, so over 4/5 years in this case

It was a clear black night, a clear white moon...

EFL Regulators! We regulate any dealin’ in this here takeover.
We’re damn good too.
But you can’t be any geek off the street,
Gotta be handy with the numbers if you know what I mean, earn your keep!

OK, would still equate to a huge salary

For a player who did his knee, it's something of a risk

Believe the cash outlay would be immediate (aka he gets that in his pocket as he signs) but accounting treatment as you said would be across the span of his contract.

They are supposed to follow the accounting conventions and when it comes to cash vs accounting rules they can be very different.
But not to the extent that they are indicated as an amortised cost throughout a period of five years when in reality a lump sum is paid in year one

Not without a note in the accounts to indicate the difference in cash and accounting transactions. So you say you just do not mention it
That’s not what you said though is it?

You seem to be backtracking because it’s clear you’re wrong and now talking about notes to the accounts.

‘Cash’ is completely irrelevant in these situations when it comes to the accounts. If it’s a 3 year deal it doesn’t matter whether we pay him on the first day or the last day or something in between, it gets spread over the duration of the contract in the accounts equally.

If he left part way through the contract then the remainder of the cost would get charged in the period he leaves.

Exactly. The cash payment could be on day 1 or the last day dependant on the contract but will be amortised across months/years equally.

No idea how football transfers work and how they would stagger the cash payment, but "signing on bonus" does suggest it's immediate.

I also can't see it being as much as 5 million. If he's on e.g 30k a week that's 3.5 years payment upfront

The amount being £5m seems high but then he’s a wanted player and out of contract, I’m not sure what a decent championship striker could look to attract in the way of a signing on fee.

From our side it’s probably cheaper than signing an in contract goal scorer so can see why he’d ask for that much.

Do big signing on fees for free signings count against FFP or not?

I'm worried we might breach FFP 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
